Seaman Fall Classic

2020 — NSDA Campus, KS/US

The Seaman HS Fall Classic

10/24/2020

Greetings! Seaman High School will be hosting our invitational tournament on Saturday, October 24th. We’d love for you to join us for this event!

Registration:

Registration will be completed through Tabroom.com. Registration begins at 8:00 AM, Monday, October 11th and closes Tuesday, October 20th at 4:00. Schools are limited to 4 entries between both divisions.

Flint Hills schools or schools that give reciprocating extras will be given first preference for extra spots. Schools will be waitlisted initially and we will process registrations in a timely fashion. Logistics are complicated this year and we are smaller than usual, so spots are only guaranteed to Flint Hills schools and reciprocators

Divisions:

The tournament will host an Open division and a Novice division. You may distribute your entries however you wish between divisions.

***The novice division is limited to students who have no debate experience prior to this season and will adhere to the Kansas Debate Coaches Novice Case List. All novice teams entered must run an affirmative that addresses a topic area chosen by coaches. A list of the allowed affirmative topic areas can be found on the next page. In the event that teams do not read one of these affirmatives, judges will be instructed to continue watching the round, but award a win to the negative, regardless of outcome.***

Sweeps/Awards:

Sweeps will be determined by the best 3-team record with at least one entry in each division.

Individual medals will be awarded to the top 6 teams in each division.

Fees:

Fees are $6.00 per team. Fees will be locked at midnight on Wed, October 21st due to room request requirements. You may still drop after that date, but fees will be assessed/locked then.

Mundane Details:

  1. We will be debating the resolution Resolved: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing.

  2. The tournament will be cross-examination style with 8-3-5 time limits. Prep time will be 8 minutes. Our tournament will follow KSHSAA guidelines concerning wireless access.

  3. Rounds 1 and 2 in all divisions will be pre-set. We will delay power match in rounds 3-4.

  4. NOVICE 2019 AFFIRMATIVE CASE LIMITATIONS: In accordance with survey results and decisions made by Kansas debate coaches, ALL TEAMS ENTERED IN THE SATURDAY NOVICE DIVISION must run an affirmative case in one of the following areas: Death Penalty, ManMin, Defund Police, Marijuana, Juvenile Justice

A note on drops: Same-day drops are corrosive to the organization of a tournament and dealing with them greatly increases potential for errors that can cascade out of control and put a tournament behind. But, they do happen, we all get that.

PLEASE text drops to the tournament, 785.312.4904, at the earliest possible time. This allows us to process them quickly and have the most accurate round 1 schedule and hopefully start on time. Include your school in the text.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

We are virtual this year; we will be using NSDA Campus to run the tourney

Attending schools will have to help provide judges; we're trying to build a community pool to help alleviate stress and get maximum entries involved, but we simply don't have the community at the moment to supply

There have been a lot of technical issues. We understand. However, at some point, rounds need to start. If your team is late by more than 30 min through no fault of the tourney, we will forfeit them for that round
We will build a back-up Zoom, but we will only move to that format if we lose Campus for at least 45 minutes
