Novice Workshop Invitation

Saturday, October 31, 2020

Greetings Coaches!

You are invited to the inaugural JacksonEast Novice Workshop! This is a great opportunity for your novices to have some practice rounds, learn how a virtual tournament works, attend some workshops, and meet some new friends before the season begins. As always, you may assign some of your varsity students to “angel” rounds with your novices. Angels may not present material to the judge, but they can help novices throughout the round. Please note, however, that we will also need as many varsity judges as you can offer. This year, we will offer LD, PF, CX, DI, Duo, HI, OO, Poe, Extemp, and Congress, POI and Info.

All events will allow manuscripts. Entries are unlimited.  All events will happen at the same time. This is a great way to teach your novice participants about the proper protocol if they are double entered at other tournaments. A Congress docket will be provided. If students have legislation, they should bring it.

Registration : Please register competitors and varsity judges on tabroom -http://eastjackson.tabroom.com

All competitors and judges need linked tabroom accounts.

Entry fees are $3.00 per entry.  We would appreciate notification of your intent to attend and some indication of preliminary numbers by Friday, 23 October 2020.  Final entries are due by Friday, 30 October 2020.

All entries will need to submit the media release form. Found here

Platform: NSDA Campus. All events will be synchronous.

Participation: There are neither final rounds nor final placings at this workshop.  This allows for an unlimited number of judges per round (and thus more ballots and comments). Varsity students can receive NSDA points for judging.  Varsity students should be willing and able to judge students from their own schools.

Awards: We will issue ribbons to all students who do perform. If a student receives one first place rank from any judge during any of the rounds, this student will receive a first place ribbon.  If the highest ranking a student receives during the course of the workshop is a second, he/she will receive a second place ribbon.   All debaters will receive either a first or second place ribbon.  All other participating students will receive at least a third place ribbon.

Resolutions:

    • Lincoln Douglas: Resolved: The United States ought to provide a federal jobs guarantee.

    • Public Forum: Resolved: The United States should adopt a declaratory nuclear policy of no first use.

  • Policy: Resolved: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing.

  •  Novice Policy Case Areas:

  1. Forensic Science: Limit use of facial recognition software.

  2. Policing: Abandon federal efforts to force local police to assist in immigration enforcement.

  3. Sentencing: Abolish mandatory minimum sentences.

  4. Sentencing: Drug decriminalization

Congress Legislation: Find legislation here

Workshops: We plan to have Jackson and East students present at the workshops. If you would like to assist in running a workshop, please let us know. We are still looking for coach presenters in various events.
