Here is more tournament information:

The tournament will take place entirely Online!

The tournament is sponsored and built by Michigan State’s Spartan Speech. Spartan Speech is a club made up of former MIFA forensicators and speech-lovers, a full group of Michigan State students who once were on your team! Members include alumni from Walled Lake Western, Bloomfield Hills, Portage Northern, Standish-Sterling, Groves, Divine Child, Seaholm, Stevenson, Portage Central, Loy Norrix, Avondale, Skyline and more! Help us stay involved in speech activities: register your team, consider judging a round, and help us find a way to make this forensics season continue for high schoolers, especially seniors.

Categories

Reality TV Interpretation: In this event, contestants can choose from a wide range of reality television shows to present. Shows could be game shows, reality documentaries, or other “real” shows. This includes anything from Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the Bachelor, Survivor, the Voice, and so many more! The suggested time limit for this event is 4-7 minutes.

Shark Tank Pitch: In this event, contestants can choose any item, made-up or already existing, to pitch to the audience. Items can be literally anything. Visuals ARE allowed, but they must be items already located in your house. We do not encourage going out and buying materials, as this is the Quarantournament. The suggested time limit for this event is 4-7 minutes.

The day…

This tournament will NOT be like your typical forensics invitational. Instead, to create more of a “special” mood, this fun and zany tournament will be facilitated through the style of a March Madness bracket. Students will submit videos of their pieces, then we will randomly sort their videos into head-to-head match-ups. On Saturday, we will livestream tournament results as our judges go round-to-round and competitors move on.

All pre-elimination rounds will have three judges, so that competitors can have even more feedback than they would at a normal tournament. In the Final Four round, there will be a panel of all-star judges who will judge all four competitors.

Once we reach the final four of both categories, student videos will be placed in a live stream on the Spartan Speech Youtube account for a final round. During the live stream, competitors and others are encouraged to watch and vote via a poll on our live feed page. The collective votes of the competitors will count as the weight of one extra judge. So, as an example, if there are four judges in the final round, there will be a fifth score awarded based on the votes of the audience.

Logistics

Double-entries at this tournament are allowed! Middle school competitors will be competing alongside high schoolers, as we have limited resources in running another tournament. Still, we hope this does not discourage you from registering your middle level team for a day of fun in our current world-state.

The Final Four will receive trophies, and there will be two sets of sweeps trophies.

The fee for the tournament is $4 per entry to cover the costs of web-services and trophies. All of these allocated funds go directly into building a fantastic experience for the students, especially the seniors. Competitors will be prompted for this fee when submitting their videos. If you are a coach who would like to arrange payment for your entire team, please email us.

The deadline for registration is Tuesday May 12th, 2020.

Students will be required to submit their videos by Thursday, May 14th at 12pm Noon.

Students must make an account on our website to receive access to the “Submit” page where they can upload their video links. Judges must also make an account and will be emailed with instructions on how to view their assigned videos at assigned times on the day of the tournament. All of the tournaments links and voting, judging and polling options will take place on our website.

We have also set up an FAQ page to help answer any additional questions you may have.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have, you can reach Sam at blochsam@msu.edu.

Thank you again for your interest and we can’t wait to see some wonderful forensicatin!
