Greeley Central High School

1515 14th Ave

Greeley, CO 80631

On behalf of the Greeley Central Wildcat Forensics Speech & Debate Team, I would like to invite you all to the FIRST NOVICE tournament of the season: The Kitty Classic Novice Tournament.  Come play with the Cats and Kitties at Greeley Central for what is sure to be an exciting tournament.  My very own kitties welcome you as well!!!

PLEASE NOTE: As this is the first novice, all competitors should be in their FIRST year of high school forensics speech and debate. We need your varsity students to come and judge.  I will have food for COACHES.

EVENTS:

Debate:  CX, LD, PF

Platform: OO, Info, Combined Extemp

Interp: Humor, Drama, Duo, Poetry, POI

If there aren’t enough POI competitors, they will be combined with Poetry.  If there aren’t enough Info competitors, they will be combined with OO.

ENTRY LIMITS:

Come one, come all… however, if you bring 19 OOers, there is a grand possibility that they will be competing against each other… as long as we have the judges, we don’t care how many come… we have 60 rooms.

NOTE ON CX: If you have CXers, I need you to register them and contact me ASAP.  If we do not have at least 4 teams committed to attend by September 19, I will not have CX as an event.  Additionally, if at least 2 schools do not have CX teams entered, I will not have CX as an event, as you can have those kids debate at debate practice.  If a small amount of teams exists, as suggested by other coaches, we could do 2 rounds instead of 3.

COST:

$6 per person, $12 per team event (because 2 people make up a team event) based on preregistration on September 26th.  Make checks payable to GREELEY CENTRAL, c/o Sarah French-Hahn.

If you are fortunate enough to have a P-Card/Credit Card, you can call my fabulous finance secretary, Nancy Kern, and pay that way, just let her know it is for the forensics tournament.  970-348-5002.

REGISTRATION:

Please try to register by September 27th.  Fees are set on that date. We have plenty of rooms for a novice tournament, but please try to get me numbers as soon as you have them so we can plan for rooms, food and copies of ballots. I will be doing paper ballots since I don’t have computers to loan out to varsity students to judge.

School Phone: 970-348-5139

Cell Phone: 970-405-3198

Email: sfrench@greeleyschools.org

Registration: www.kittyclassic.tabroom.com

JUDGES:

Please bring one varsity judge for each five events entries and one varsity judge for each two debate entries.  We will attempt to use all student judges every round if entries allow.  Judge’s lounge will be on the 2nd floor directly across from the library. We will NOT be feeding student judges, sorry kids, pack a lunch or bring money for concessions. PLEASE TEACH THEM HOW TO JUDGE, WRITE COMMENTS, RANK AND USE A BALLOT before they get to the tournament.

Please explain to students that the more events they're willing to judge, the better the chance that we'll get to use them every round...i.e. if your team brings five varsity orators who tell us that's the only event they judge, and there's only 10 total OO entries at the meet, they'd better bring homework to do.  If we cannot find them when we pass out ballots, their judge cards will pulled and they will not be assigned another round.

DEBATE TOPICS

PF will use the September/October NSDA topic:

Resolved: The European Union should join the Belt and Road initiative.

LD will use the September/October NDSA topic:

Resolved: In the United States, colleges and universities ought not consider standardized tests in undergraduate admissions decisions.

CX will use the 2019-2020 NDSA topic:

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce Direct Commercial Sales and/or Foreign Military Sales of arms from the United States.

NOVICE STUDENT CLASSIFICATION:

A novice competitor is in his/her first year of high school competition...not first year competing in the event, but first year at a high school tournament. This means that the competitor should have had 0 NSDA points as of October 5th.  Any student who is not in their first year of competition will be disqualified.  Please contact me if you have any other questions OR would request an exception.
