2019 — San Jose, CA/US

ND Parliamentary Warm-Up 2019

Notre Dame High School is pleased to invite you to the Parliamentary Debate Warm Up tournament on September 14-15th 2019! This tournament is open to Varsity and Novice students in hopes of preparing for a rigorous tournament season! The tournament will feature 5 rounds of debate for Novice and 5 rounds of preliminary debate with a break to Octos for Varsity, depending on entries.

About the Tournament:

Schools may initially register 4 teams per division, additional school entries will be waitlisted and can be added at tournament director discretion. The maximum capacity of the tournament in both divisions is 75 teams.

Students do not need to dress formally-this is a fun tournament, so casual dress is encouraged!

Topics

Topics will be announced 20 minutes before each round in the student area/prep room and students may use the internet, pre-prepared briefs, downloaded or paper articles to formulate arguments. Team prep is allowed, but not coach prep. Debates for varsity will utilize the 7-8-8-8-4-5 format for speech times.

Topics will be drawn from current events and topics of current relevant interest. THERE WILL BE NO TOPIC AREAS FOR THIS TOURNAMENT. Awards will be given to finalists and champions in the Open division and undefeated novices, as well as to top speakers in each division.

The topic committee consists for the Notre Dame coaching staff and current Notre Dame varsity debaters.

Entries/Divisions/Judging:

Novice are students who are in their first year of competitive debate, not just students who have never done Parli. The division might be collapsed if not enough entries warrant a separate division. If you have questions about novice eligibility, please email mcruz@ndsj.org for any clarifications

Varsity students may judge any novice rounds. Yes, you can use your older students to judge, but for NOVICE rounds only! Free NSDA points for all! Please note, we will not be letting varsity students judge varsity rounds this year. Therefore, varsity student judges will only cover novice entries.

*TBA/No Name Entries must have names before September 6th, or they will be cleared in favor of named WL entries*

Judging Info

Please enter 1 judge per 2 entries or fraction thereof. The more judges the better, and since you may use varsity students to judge, my goal is for there to be no shortage of judges so this tournament can run as efficiently as possible. All varsity judges will be required to judge one round past where their team drops. That means, we are requiring that ALL varsity judges be present to judge the first elim on Sunday. If you have varsity students who can judge rounds beyond your school's commitment, please let us know and we will add them to the judging pool for novice.

Due to our limited resources and the early date of the tournament, it will be very difficult for us to find hired judging for uncovered teams. We ask that you please provide judges for all your entries. If you absolutely CANNOT provide judges, we will find hired judges for an additional fee. Please email mcruz@ndsj.org for more information.

Food

Students may bring their own lunch, or they may purchase a lunch from the various nearby downtown San Jose restaurants. Food for chaperones and coaches will be provided at no cost. Snacks and drinks will be sold on campus to students. The schedule allows for a longer lunch break so that students may enjoy the many off campus dining options of Downtown San Jose, so please plan accordingly with your students.

Cost: The cost for registration is 45.00/team for Novice and 65.00/team for Open. There is no school fee.

Make checks payable to: Notre Dame San Jose

You will need to set up a school account if you have not already done so, it is free and easy to use!

Please register no later than September 10th, 2019. The tournament may fill to capacity before that date so enter as soon as possible!

Drops made after September 12th will be assessed a $25.00 drop fee, including drops made at registration.

Adults/Chaperones:

Please provide one adult chaperone per school that can stay the entire day. That chaperone will need to have permission slips/medical authorization forms and authorized by the school to chaperone students. The legal chaperone should register the school at the registration period and pay any outstanding fees due at that time. One person may chaperone more than one school if they have all the forms for their students.
