Event Description:

DUET ACTING

Section 1. Duet Acting shall be defined as an acting exercise composed of two students who portray a memorized ten (10)-minute cutting from a published work of literature. Prompting shall not be allowed.

Sec. 2. Duet acting selections shall not be more than ten minutes in length. This shall include the introduction.

Sec. 3. A student shall portray only one character in a scene. However, he/she may portray more than one character if the cutting consists of more than one scene, or if the scene is written for the actors' portrayal of multiple characters. Cuttings of multiple scenes must be bridged by memorized narration.

Sec. 4. A narrated introduction to the cutting shall be given by one or both members. This shall be included in the ten (10) -minute time limit.

Sec. 5. Stage make-up, costumes or properties shall be prohibited with the exception of two (2) chairs and a table.

Sec. 6. Selections shall be taken from published works of humorous or dramatic literature and shall NOT be taken from records or tapes, television or movies, or be the original work of the student or coach. Selections can include play scripts, short stories, novels and poetry. In the event of a challenge of material, the coach or sponsor must supply proof of the publication of the material.

TIME PENALTIES

1. Performances in all individual events shall be within set time limits for each event.

2. If an official timekeeper is present, the following shall occur:

a. Time shall be visible to the performer(s) (Time cards or similar procedures may be used.)

b. After the "STOP" card goes up, there shall be a 15-second grace period. Upon completion of the additional 15 seconds, the timekeeper shall stand and keep timing until the performer(s) is finished.

c. Any performance in excess of the 15-second grace period shall not receive the First Division rating or the “T” ranking in the round.

3. If no official timekeeper is present, no penalty shall be enforced. THE JUDGE SHALL NOT SERVE AS OFFICIAL TIMEKEEPER.
