Event Description:
8-10 minute; memorized speech that is published. Student may cut the piece to meet time limits. Limited to 9-10th graders.
Declamation
1. Choice of Selection: Any speech that has been delivered before an audience may be used in this event. Thus political, eulogistic, ceremonial, forensic, and any other types are appropriate.
2. Introduction
a. Composed by the speaker, the introduction an establish the speech's theme, set the mood, motivate the listeners as to the need to hear what the speech is about, provide background information, etc.
b. It must describe the context in which the speech was originally delivered, minimally citing the date, occasion, place and name of the original speaker.
3. Suitability: Ideally, the speaker should capture the spirit of the speech's original performance without being imitative of it. He/she should demonstrate an intellectual and emotional maturity as well as poise and sincerity commensurate with the speech's content and style. If the speaker cannot sound "at home" with the speech's idea and language, if would do him/her well to choose another oration.
