Original Poetry
Event Description:
Students participating in this special event may use a manuscript or deliver the performance entirely from memory. The students will present selections of poetry that they have created themselves. Competitors may present either a single, long poem or several shorter poems. As the pieces are created by the students themselves, when judges are assessing the performances they will be expected to consider both the quality of the writing and the ability of students to convey the meaning of their poetry. The students may use vocal skills, facial expressions, and/or hand gestures to develop a narrator and character/s. The presentation should include an introduction that cites the name of the piece(s). The poetry need not have a rhyming pattern. Free verse poetry is acceptable in this event. No costumes or props may be used in the presentation.
Time: 6 minute maximum, including introduction (30 second grace); no minimum
