Impromptu Speaking
Event Description:
In Impromptu Speaking round,the competitor receives three unique prompt options- such as quotes, words, or phrases—from the judge. The speaker must quickly select one prompt and utilize a strict total of 7 minutes to both prepare and deliver the speech. Competitors are permitted to divide this time however they choose, commonly spending 1 to 2 minutes brainstorming and outlining thoughts on paper before using the remaining time to perform. Once the preparation phase ends and the competitor stands to speak, the speech must be delivered completely from memory, as no notes, outlines, or electronic devices are permitted during the presentation. The judge provides verbal time signals during preparation and transitions to visual hand signals during the speech. To avoid a ranking penalty, the competitor's total combined time for preparation and delivery must not exceed a 7-minute-and-30-second grace period.
