UIL Ready Writing Remote with In-Person Judging and Training
2026 — Online, TX/US
Ready Writing 6A
Event Description:
This contest is for Ready Writing entries only. All essays will be written on the student's home campus and monitored by their Ready Writing coach or another experienced staff member who knows the Ready Writing rules. Entries will use the designated contestant number emailed to the coach, and the heading will follow the UIL Ready Writing guidelines. Papers may be emailed to Terri Davis, or coaches may bring essays on the day of grading. Coaches and judges will judge and rank the essays in-person on Friday, December 11, 2026 at Pine Tree High School.
Judging will follow a training session on calibration with the new Ready Writing rubric. The training will be hosted by Cameron Hurta, Terri Davis, and other experienced judges. Following training, coaches and judges will break into groups to score and rank essays. Categories will be determined by the number of entries with at least two divisions. Each a single division has more than 20 entries, then an additional division will be created. We will collapse or create divisions as needed and announce the divisions on December 11. The scoring time at Pine Tree High School will be from 9 am - 3 pm. The entry fee will cover the cost of hiring trained judges, covering their travel fees, and paying for awards. The $10 fee per judge or coach will cover lunch and hospitality.
The goal of this contest is to train judges to apply the rubric accurately, to provide exemplary feedback to students, and to train coaches to instruct students using the new Ready Writing rubric. Hopefully, there will be more coaches who feel confident to score at the invitational, district, region, and state levels.
Please contact Terri Davis if you have any questions.
