  • A Varsity debater can be any 9-12th grader with any level of experience. A Junior Varsity debater is any student (9th-12th grade) with no more than one year’s experience prior to the current school year (i.e., a second-year debater). A Novice debater is any 9th or 10th grade student who is in their first season of debate, computed from June 30 of the previous school year. Juniors and Seniors are not permitted in novice divisions. In Public Forum and Parliamentary, both debaters on a team must fit the definition in order to be entered in JV or Novice divisions.   1. Coaches should use their discretion when it comes to middle school.

  2. If a student has competed in high school divisions as a middle-school student, they should enter in JV.

  3. If a student has attended camps or competed in more than 12 rounds prior to this school year, they should enter in JV.
