Extemporaneous Speaking

Event Description:

Important rule distinctions:

FGCCFL follows the Extemporaneous Speaking event rules at set forth in the NCFL By-Laws and NSDA High School Manual. Where there is conflict between the rule sets, the NCFL By-Laws control.

Competitors will choose a speech prompt from three available choices. After selection of the prompt, competitors will be afforded 30 minutes of preparation time to be conducted in the assigned Extemp Prep Room, under the supervision of proctors. No materials of any kind are permitted to be taken with the competitor outside of the Extemp Prep Room after their preparation time is has elapsed. After the 30 minute preparation time, competitors will proceed to their assigned competition room and deliver a speech on the selected prompt without aids, props, or notes. The speech can be up to 7 minutes in length. There is a 30 second grace period afforded to competitors after the 7 minute timeframe has expired. Competitors that exceed the grace period cannot be ranked 1st in the round.
