POLICY DEBATE

  • Four preliminary rounds will determine breaks to elimination rounds.

  • In Policy Debate, we will attempt to assign experienced judges. However, depending on availability, it may be necessary to assign newer judges. Debaters are encouraged to review Tabroom paradigms and/or respectfully inquire about judge preferences before the round, and adapt their presentation accordingly.
  • The debate will follow the standard 8-3-8-3-8-3-8-3-5-5-5-5 format with open or closed cross-examination dependent on judge preference.

  • Each team will have five minutes of prep time to use as they wish.

  • We ask that NO DISCLOSURES are given during the rounds. Judges may elect to give brief (5 minutes or less) oral feedback without disclosing the winner after the round, but as a general rule, most feedback should be provided via the ballot.

  • Internet-connected laptop computers and tablet devices may be used by debaters, but may not be used to receive information for competitive advantage from non-competitors (coaches, assistant coaches, teammates, other students, etc.) inside or outside of the room in which the competition occurs. WiFi normally is readily available, but we make no assurance that interruptions will not occur. Consequently, debaters are strongly encouraged to have essential files printed in hard copy and/or downloaded on their devices.
