2024 — Farmington, UT/US

Extemporaneous Speaking

Abbreviation Extemp
Format Speech
Entry Fee $0.00 (Plus $2 / individual)
Entry 1 competitors per entry

Event Description:

With only two 1-hour rounds for speech, we have to be really efficient with Extemp (the hosts will be darned if extemp causes us to get off schedule).

How Extemp Prep will work in this tournament:

-Extemp Prep will take place within the same hour as the round (not early)

-PLEASE BE EARLY!!! The only way this is going to work is if everyone is where they're supposed to be, when they're supposed to be there.
-Each judge will hear 3 speeches
-Topics will be assigned at :00, :07, and :14 in the prep room, then competitors will make their way to their assigned rooms before their respective speech times (30 minutes after their draw)
-Judges will hear the speeches at :30, then :37, then :44.
-Final speech should finish around :51.

Extemporaneous Speaking, typically called Extemp, is a speech on current events with limited preparation time. A student’s understanding of important political, economic, and cultural issues is assessed along with critical thinking and analytical skills. Students report to a draw room (often referred to as Extemp prep) where all of the Extempers gather at tables, set out their files, and await their turn to draw topics. Students may access research brought with them to the tournament during the 30-minute preparation period. Some tournaments, including the NSDA National Tournament, will permit students to use the internet to research during preparation time. When prep time is up, the student reports to the competition room to deliver a 7 minute speech. Students have a lot to do in 30 minutes—they must select a question, review research, outline arguments with supporting materials, and practice at least part of the speech before time expires. Many tournaments prohibit the consultation of notes during the speech in which case speech structure and evidence need to be memorized during prep time as well.
