Speech

Event Description:

Students will draw two topics for the round. They will choose one and put the other back and immediately begin preparation using paper pencil and/or notecard ONLY. Other students must not look at the topics that were not chosen.

Students have five minutes TOTAL for BOTH the preparation and speech. This means students should attempt to prepare as quickly as possible and they have more time to give their speech. Student MUST begin delivery within four minutes to leave at least one minute for their speech. It is recommended students take less than one minute to prepare.

Judges may give verbal notice every 30 seconds of preparation and must tell the student when their speech time has elapsed.

Judging should be based on the argument presented and its relevance to the topic chosen. Presentation may be a factor for speaker points as well (such as delivery and gestures), but strong and interesting argumentation should be the main factor for deciding the top speaker.
