Event Description:

Original Oratory

Purpose: train and encourage students to present speeches intelligently and truthfully on any worthwhile topic suitable for a public speech. Speech should persuade, convince, or inspire.

Regulations: speaker cannot use a speech he/she has used in any previous year’s contest. Speech shall not contain more than 150 words of directly quoted material. All sources must be clearly acknowledged.

Time: 10 min. maximum (plus 30 second grace)

Manuscript: Speaker shall submit a manuscript of the speech to a judge, who will turn it into the tournament director to be given back to speaker.

Movement: NOT limited-- but it should have purpose and not distract from speech.

Judging Criteria: originality and worthwhileness of the subject, logic, freshness, depth, clarity of organization, sincerity of speaker, voice and diction, clear enunciation, and control and use of body.
