Event Description:

The tournament will feature competition in four events in one pattern: Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Interpretation and Original Oratory. National Speech & Debate Association rules will govern all competitions. There will not be separate divisions for Varsity/Novice, however middle school students are permitted to use the abbreviated time format appropriate to their age group. Judges will be instructed not to consider the difference in time as a factor in adjudication. Elimination rounds will be sectioned by preliminary round seeds to balance out the competition.

TIME LIMITS

Original Oratory
Varsity – 10:00 with 30 seconds of grace
Novice – 5:00 with 30 seconds of grace

Extemporaneous Speaking
Varsity – 7:00 with 30 seconds of grace
Novice – 5:00 with 30 seconds of grace
*Both divisions will be given 30 minutes of preparation time
*Internet is provided and allowed during prep

Impromptu Speaking
Varsity – 7:00 with 30 seconds of grace (2:00 maximum prep)
Novice – 7:00 with 30 seconds of grace (3:00 maximum prep)

Interpretation

The time limit in High School Interpretation Events (DI, Duo, HI, PO, POI, PR) is ten minutes with a 30-second “grace period.” No minimum time is mandated.

The time limit in Middle School Interpretation Events (DI, Duo, HI, PO, POI, PR) is five minutes with a 30-second “grace period.” No minimum time is mandated.
