Event Description:

Extemporaneous Speaking: Drawing will be conducted at five-minute intervals with thirty minutes preparation time. Topics will be based on current events. Consultation during prep. time is prohibited. Excessive use of notes will be penalized. The use of laptop computers, electronic storage, retrieval devices, etc. is permitted in Extemporaneous Speaking for evidence retrieval in the draw room so long as wire or wireless connections are disabled and remain disabled while draw is in progress. Time limit: 5 minutes, maximum. The criteria students will be judged upon includes:

Organization: Did the speech have an introduction that was interesting and pertinent? Was the thesis clearly stated? Was the speech well organized in its development from introduction to conclusion? Was the conclusion effective?

Relevance: Did the speaker deal directly and exclusively with the topic? Did the speaker provide a clear explanation of current events?

Knowledge of Subject: Did the speaker have adequate knowledge of the subject? Were specific facts and examples provided? Did the speaker provide support for his or her answer?

Delivery: Did the speaker exercise a lively sense of communication? Was a natural, conversational tone used? Was the tempo and pacing appropriate? Were gestures, facial expression, and movement natural?

Total Effectiveness: Did the speech effectively fulfill its intended purpose? Was the judge persuaded? Does the speaker hold attention throughout the speech? Does the speaker use language effectively?
