Mesa High School Jackrabbit Jamboree

2021 — NSDA Campus, AZ/US

Duo Interpretation

Abbreviation DUO
Format Speech
Entry Fee $16.00
Entry Limit Per School 8
Entry 2 competitors per entry

Event Description:

Duos will be asked to submit a video performance by Friday, November 6th at 6:00 p.m. This is to mitigate potential problems with too many people using the integrated videoconferencing software simultaneously (the software recommends limiting to 15 people. 7 Duo teams + 3 judges in a semis room, for example, would exceed that limit and degrade quality). Duos will be required to record from separate rooms, even if competitors are able to be in the same location (We recommend using Zoom and its built-in recording functionality). Editing the videos beyond merely truncating the beginning and end (to eliminate footage of fiddling with the camera, for example) will not be allowed. The use of professional lighting will not be allowed (we highly recommend that performers find a large window, put the camera near the window, and face that direction for good, consistent illumination) (DON'T skirt this one by using your stage lights or something! That's not cool. Other folks don't have that ability/access). We do recommend that competitors use microphones of some sort when recording (the microphone built into wireless headphones is usually a good choice.

Duo Interpretation: While AIA Tournament Rules will be the foundation for the operation of this tournament, please be advised that they will not apply in all situations. We have clearly noted any diversions from the AIA rules in the event information section. Event rules align with the NSDA.

Contest: The presentation is a memorized performance of literature by 2 competitors.

Length: The time limit is 10 minutes with a 30-second “grace period.” If there are multiple judges in the round, all must agree that the student has gone beyond the grace period. Should a student go beyond the grace period, the student may not be ranked 1st. There is no other prescribed penalty for going over the grace period. The ranking is up to each individual judge’s discretion. Judges who choose to time are to use accurate (stopwatch function) timing devices. No minimum time is mandated.

Publication Rules: The new NSDA's literature publication rules apply.

Voice: The voice/point of view (first, second, or third person) of a script may not be changed.

Adaptations: Changes to the script may only be used for the purpose of transition or to eliminate profane language. Transitions may be used to clarify the logical sequence of ideas. They are not to be used for the purpose of embellishing the humorous or dramatic effect of the literature. Combining small fractions of sentences or singular words to create humorous or dramatic dialogue, scenes, moments, and/or plotlines not intended in the original literature is prohibited. Transitions only may be used to clarify the logical sequence of ideas
