Event Description:

Duo Improvisation encourages and increases the development of dramatic, improvisational, and communication skills, and to deliver to the audience emotional and intellectual content with spontaneity, directness, and clarity, clearly suggesting the characters and personality of two or more figures.

Contest Regulations:

1. The contestants will draw three scenarios while in the room with the judge. The contestants will select one scenario and return the other two to the judge. (The selected scenario is NOT to be returned to the envelope for possible future selection.)

2. The timing for this event shall be a maximum of 7 minutes, with no minimum time requirement. The speakers shall take no more than 3 minutes to prepare- at which point the judge will call upon the speakers to deliver their performance. Speakers may end their preparation time early. The adjudicator will provide oral time signals during preparation, and hand signals during delivery. Any entry which exceeds the established time limit by more than 30 seconds may not rank first or score highest in the round.

3. All performances must be original and prepared in the presence of the round. Previously compiled material is prohibited. The use of a manuscript is prohibited.

4. No properties or costumes are permitted.

5. Each interpreter may present one or more characters and either or both may present narration.

6. In duo improvisation, the material may contain humorous or serious tones. Appropriate language must be used.

7. There is no restriction on eye contact or movement.

Improvisation is the art of creating and presenting a story using a situation and two separate characters.

RATIONALE

Improvisation encourages students to create interesting believable characters and to deliver a story in a creative manner.

JUDGING GUIDELINES (Ballot <LINK>)

Using spontaneous bodily activity, the improvisation actor must effectively incorporate the situation and the two characters into a definite storyline. Evidence of the student’s creativity is essential in this category.
