National Qualifiers/Results for 2021

The NSDA GA Northern Mountain District committee is happy to formally announce that this year's district tournament will take place online on February 19th and February 20th. Your team's attendance at this event is strongly encouraged, and we urge you to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.

The NSDA recently announced:

"After months of careful consideration, we have made the decision to host the 2021 National Speech & Debate Tournament online for middle school and high school students due to the ongoing pandemic. The National Tournament offers students an unparalleled platform to share their stories and speak up on the issues they care about, and we are committed to giving students that opportunity through an online event.
We've also decided to expand competition opportunities to more member students and schools by implementing the following change to supplemental events. Every member school that participates in the district tournament series will have the opportunity to enter up to two non-qualifying students in supplemental events at the online 2021 National Tournament. These students must have attended the district tournament but not earned qualification in any event. This applies to every school that participated in the district tournament, regardless of whether they qualified other students to the National Tournament, and it only applies to the 2021 National Tournament.

For those of you new to the NSDA, if your school/team falls into the Georgia Northern Mountain District, consider this your formal invitation to attend this tournament. The other district in the state of Georgia is the Southern Peach District. If you are uncertain if your school falls into this district, feel free to reach out to one of this committee's members.  This district committee members (elected on an every other year basis) include the following individuals: Chair, Steven Wang (GA Connections Academy), Mario Herrera (Grady HS), Charity Wang (GA Connections Academy), David Gay (Dunwoody HS), and Jamie Wills (Cherokee HS).

This committee works together to encourage forensics in the schools within our district and to make the district tournament happen. If you are interested in your students attending nationals - held each year by the NSDA in June - your team MUST attend a district tournament to compete for a bid.

Even if you or your students are not interested in going to the national tournament, the district tournaments are - at the very least - another opportunity for your students to compete! In addition to that, the more students who attend districts means the more students we can send to the national tournament, so by choosing to attend, you are choosing to give more Georgia students this once in a lifetime opportunity. For all of the aforementioned reasons, we strongly encourage everyone in the GA Northern Mountain District to compete in this year's tournament to help us help student dreams of nationals come to fruition.

In order to be eligible to attend the district tournament, the first thing a team must do is enter speaking points into the NSDA points system. For every tournament your students attend, for every round they speak at that event, students earn speaking points and can move up in the various honor degrees the NSDA offers. The NSDA is like a national honor society for public speaking, and it is a great honor to be a member of - and hold a high degree from - the National Speech and Debate Association. Your points from this season may be set to auto post, but there is a points entry agreement function on the NSDA website (when you first open up the “Enter Points” feature) that you will have to “throw through” to cause this to happen.  Do not hesitate to reach out to any one of your district committee members if you have any questions about how to do this.

In closing, we hope you will add this year's district tournament to your team's calendar. Remember, we are here to serve you and help you and your team reach its utmost potential. Feel free to reach out to us at any time!  Registration is set to close at 8PM THIS Friday, FEBRUARY 12, 2021, so that NSDA Campus rooms can be ordered and secured for use.

Sincerely, your district committee!

Chair, Steven Wang (GA Connections Academy)

Mario Herrera (Grady HS)
Charity Wang (GA Connections Academy)
David Gay (Dunwoody HS)
Jamie Wills (Cherokee HS)

Please make the entry fees check payable to The North GA Community Foundation GNMD Fund. Please mail to Steven Wang, 1380 Montrose Dr., Gainesville, GA 30501, to ease record keeping (when they go directly to the Community Foundation address, it sometimes causes havoc in terms of tracking/record keeping).

Any NSDA fees (dues, memberships, etc...) need to be made payable by separate check (or electronic payment) to NSDA, and it is highly desirable that they be paid in full by Friday 2/12/21, so that all is electronically cleared well before Round I of the Tournament.
