PF: I prefer that PF stays as close to it's original intent (in terms of the use of debate theory, jargon, etc.) as possible - i.e., I should be able to judge this round as a layperson with no prior knowledge of the high school debate space. If you're going to spend a considerable amount of time between speeches calling for cards please weigh every card you've asked for.
LD: I appreciate as much of a straightforward framework and/or case debate as you can give me.
I am the Coach at Carrollton High School, Carrollton, GA. I have been coaching for a number of years. I have coached policy, LD, and PF debate.
I expect debaters to weigh arguments, if you don’t then I'm going to weigh them and you probably won't like that. I like warrants in case. If they provide a warrant and your only response is "they don't have evidence for this" but it logically makes sense, I'm likely to give them some ground on it. Tell me why your response matters and delinks their case. Speed is okay as long as you speak clearly. Arguments that you want me to vote “off of” should be extended through summary and final focus. I don't flow crossfire. If it's important, say it in a speech. I think that debate should be about integrity and truth, meaning be aware of the language you use and the validity of your evidence. There is no place in debate for misconstruing and/or using fake evidence. The flow is important for me in making a decision. If an argument is to be evaluated it should be cleanly extended through the debate. I hate voting on arguments that were not well developed. The debate should not be about blindly reading cards without understanding them. I'm unlikely to vote on theory unless there's an actual violation in the round. Contextual analysis is always good.
I am a former high school debater that has dabbled in everything. I’ve been judging for the past six years and have judged everything, but policy. I recently graduated with a degree in Anthropology, with a focus on cultural anthropology. I’m a pretty typical PF judge and will vote for the team with the most compelling argument, however, I do like a solid framework. As far as cross goes, I don’t care if you sit or stand—whatever is most comfortable for you works for me. I don’t like when you address me during cross because I feel like you should be focused on your opponents instead. My BIGGIE is DO NOT SPREAD. If you are going too fast, I will not flow the round and drop you. This is PF, not policy. I have an extensive speech background and will be pretty merciless when it comes to speaker points. Other than that, remember to be respectful during the debate. Things can get pretty heated sometimes, but that is no excuse for rudeness. If you say things during the round that that are sexist, racist, homophobic, etc., I will drop you immediately. Let’s be kind to one another and remember to have fun! I look forward to hearing some good debates!

- PF - I side on the traditional side of PF. Don't throw a lot of jargon at me or simply read cards... this isn't Policy Jr., compete in PF for the debate animal it is. Remember debate, especially PF, is meant to persuade - use all the tools in your rhetorical toolbox: Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
- Speed - Debate is a SPEAKING event. I like speed but not spreading. Speak as fast as is necessary but keep it intelligible. There aren't a lot of jobs for speed readers after high school (auctioneers and pharmaceutical disclaimer commercials) so make sure you are using speed for a purpose. If you spread - it better be clear, I will not yell clear or slow down or quit mumbling, I will just stop listening. If the only way I can understand your case is to read it, you have already lost. If you are PRESENTING and ARGUING and PERSUADING then I need to understand the words coming out of your mouth! NEW for ONLINE DEBATE - I need you to speak slower and clearer, pay attention to where your mike is. On speed in-person, I am a 7-8. Online, make it a 5-6.
- Email Chains Please include me on email chains if it is used in the round, but don't expect me to sit there reading your case to understand your arguments - pchildress@gocats.org **Do not email me outside of the round unless you include your coach in the email.
- Know your case, like you actually did the research and wrote the case and researched the arguments from the other side. If you present it, I expect you to know it from every angle - I want you to know the research behind the statistic and the whole article, not just the blurb on the card.
- Casing - Love traditional but I am game for kritiks, counterplans, theory - but perform them well, KNOW them, I won't do the links for you. I am a student of Toulmin - claim-evidence-warrant/impacts. I don't make the links and don't just throw evidence cards at me with no analysis. It is really hard for you to win with an AFF K with me - it better be stellar. I am not a big fan of Theory shells that are not actually linked in to the topic - if you are going to run Afro-Pes or Feminism you better have STRONG links to the topic at hand, if the links aren't there... Also don't just throw debate terms out, use them for a purpose and if you don't need them, don't use them.
- I like clash. Argue the cases presented, mix it up, have some fun, but remember that debate is civil discourse - don't take it personal, being the loudest speaker won't win the round, being rude to your opponent won't win you the round.
- Debating is a performance in the art of persuasion and your job is to convince me, your judge (not your opponent!!) - use the art of persuasion to win the round: eye contact, vocal variations, appropriate gestures, and know your case well enough that you don't have to read every single word hunched over a computer screen. Keep your logical fallacies for your next round. Rhetoric is an art.
- Technology Woes - I will not stop the clock because your laptop just died or you can't find your case - not my problem, fix it or don't but we are going to move on.
- Ethics - Debate is a great game when everyone plays by the rules. Play by the rules - don't give me a reason to doubt your veracity.
- Win is decided by the flow (remember if you don't LINK it, I don't either), who made the most successful arguments and used evidence and reasoning to back up those arguments.
- Speaker Points are awarded to the best speaker - I end up with a rare low point win each season. I am fairly generous on speaker points. I disclose winner but not speaker points. Even is you are losing a round or not feeling it during the round, don't quit on yourself or your opponent! You may not like the way your opponent set up their case or you may not like a certain style of debate but don't quit in a round.
- Don't browbeat less experienced debaters; you should aim to win off of argumentation skill against less experienced opponents, not smoke screens or jargon. 7 off against a first-year may get you the win, but it kills the educational and ethical debate space you should strive for. As an experienced debater, you should hope to EDUCATE them not run them out of the event.
- Enjoy yourself. Debate is the best sport in the world - win or lose - learn something from each round, don't gloat, don't disparage other teams, judges, or coaches, and don't try to convince me after the round is over. Leave it in the round and realize you may have just made a friend that you will compete against and talk to for the rest of your life. - Rule of Debate Life. Sometimes you will be told you are the winner when you believe you didn't win the round - accept it as a gift from the debate gods and move on. Sometimes you will be told you lost a round that you KNOW you won - accept that this is life and move on. Sometimes judges base a decision on something that you considered insignificant or irrelevant and sometimes judges get it wrong, it sucks but that is life. However, if the judge is inappropriate - get your advocate, your coach, to address the issue. Arguing with the judge in the round or badmouthing them in the hall or cafeteria won't solve the issue.
- Immediate losers for me - be disparaging to the other team or make racist, homophobic, sexist arguments or comments. Essentially, be kind and respectful if you want to win.

I used to compete in Congressional debate, HI, DI, Informative, Extemp, Impromptu, and BQD back in high school for four years. I have been judging PF for 5 years now. keep up with prep time

I am a parent of two children that have competed in PF (for Grady High School) over the last three years. I'm relatively new to judging, but have been presenting and viewing presentations for years, so have a good sense for what could serve you well in your future professional lives.
I have a business/consulting background, so I appreciate brevity and clarity. Please give me at least a few seconds background on what you're going to do, whether it's stating the case, putting into "layman's terms" if the topic is at all complex, or just giving me a "head's up" on what to expect. I recognize that there are time constraints, but please don't speed through your points so quickly that I can't even understand you. Summarize your points if you have time.
Also, don't be a jerk (which includes condescension) to your competitors.
Most importantly, try to have fun!
I am a very recently graduated top competitor in Georgia IEs. Having said this, I am very familiar with current popular topics and styles for OOs, Interps, and topics for Extemp. My criteria for judging each of the speech events is different, so here is a list of what I expect from top level IEs:
Impromptu: I expect Impromptus to be entertaining and non-formulaic. The topic should be analyzed in an abstract way that allows the competitor to tie outside information or ideas into the topic with a clever and creative link. However, the speaker should not ramble and make connections that can not be explained for the sake of entertainment value. Although I expect as much of the 5 minute limit to be used as possible, rambling without organization will lower the speaker's score. A general outline of the speech will greatly affect my ability to follow the speaker's ideas and thus keep me more engaged. Lastly, performance is very important to me. A speech with a vibrant and fun performance can easily bring up poor content. Essentially, a strong mix of an entertaining link and content and vibrant performance will get a high score form me.
Extemp: Although very different in style from Impropmtu, I still expect Extemp speeches to be somewhat entertaining. A mixture of good sources, interesting view points, and humor/good presentation should be used to make the speech not only engaging and fun to listen to for the judge, but helps me consider your viewpoint as valid and well thought out. I will not take my political views into account for these speeches whatsoever, so any route may be taken with your topic. DO NOT just read off statistics. I expect a clear explanation on the reason why that evidence is significant and important for me to know. I do not expect everyone to use all 7 minutes. If you can make your point quickly and concisely, no points will be taken off. Essentially, I want a speech with a clear, well explained thesis backed by evidence that is thoroughly integrated into the speaker's view while still managing to make the speech fun to listen to.
OO: Originality and a fun presentation are absolute musts for a good OO. With much more freedom to build an entertaining and original piece than the improv events, I expect these pieces to be well thought out, thought provoking, and something I've never heard before. If a speaker uses an overused topic, an interesting spin on that topic can easily save their score. I expect as much of the 10 minutes to be used as possible, as these pieces should be rehearsed and practiced to utilize ample time. A fun mix of interesting content and a truly electric performance will easily catch a top spot from me.
Interps: For the earlier tournaments, I am not expecting mastery of acting techniques, especially from novices. However, I do expect full effort to be put into the performance, whether that be blocking, accents, or emotional aspects. Simply memorizing lines will not give many points. There must be a clear attempt to make the piece personal to the speaker, thus being their interpretation. Performance will be the largest factor of scoring for me in these events. A simple slip up or forgetting one line will be a very small infraction as long as there is a smooth recovery.
* I prefer a conversational-paced debate. If you are going to spread, do it well. I do not judge what I do not clearly understand.
* I prefer solvency to be used together with philosophy.
* I have been judging for four years, but I am a parent judge. If you are running complicated cases, do not assume I have background to understand all debate terminology or philosophy. Please "unpack" what you mean into language a lay person is sure to understand.
* I generally prefer more traditional debate to very progressive debate. With that said there have been times I've voted for a more progressive case, if it was explained well and the debater made the best argument.
* I do not tolerate discrimination (sexism, racism, etc.). You will not win a case I am judging by using philosophical, moral or any other arguments to promote discrimination.
* I do consider cross-X to be part of the judged debate for speaker points. I generally do not judge cross-X for the winner or loser of the debate - therefore, be sure to flow any important points into the round. I do NOT care if you look at each other during cross-X or not.
* Please keep your own time and time your opponent. I do use a timer as well, but have occasionally had a glitch and we want a fair round. Within reason, feel free to complete your sentence once time is up. If an opponent asks a question during cross-X and then time is up, it is your choice if you want to answer that question or not.
* Expect things like eye contact with the judge, voice intonation, covering your face with paper or computer while speaking, nervous habits such as clicking pens/rocking to all be factored into your speaker points.
* I do prefer that you ask if the judge and opponent are ready before beginning. Also, I prefer you give an off-time road map in rounds where it is appropriate.
* Normally, I will vote for any argument if it not addressed by the opponent and is flowed through the rounds. However, if your facts are blatantly false and easily confirmable as false, I will not weigh the argument. Please make sure your research is warranted and accurate.
* I do NOT have preferences on if you debate standing or sitting or if you sit on a particular side.
* If you want to email your cards or constructive to your opponent that is your choice. However, I will not accept emails and only judge what I hear and understand from the actual debate. The one exception is if I feel I need to ask for cases or cards after the round is complete to double check my understanding of key points in order to make the best decision.

I am okay with any speed.
Speak your contention very clearly at the beginning of your points, I prefer off time roadmaps.
Time yourself and tell me loudly when you are starting.
Keep your own prep time, inform me that you are taking prep and tell me how much time was taken after.
Know all the speech times so we can avoid confusions and get through the round fast.
If a coin flip is required, the debaters will flip and decide and inform me after which side they are on and speaking order.
No preference on desk arrangement or how CX is done.
I am a traditional parent judge. Do not spread. Engage the topic. Clash is very important. I like sign posts and voters. I do not like jargon. To earn my ballot tell me why you have won. Write the reason for decision for me.
First off congratulations to all competitors for making it this far, hats off. I used to do Speech and Debate as well and I own the title for POI Georgia State Champion for the 2019 season. I enjoy thrill filled speeches, showcase of compassion, and I enjoy watching the performer getting lost in their scenes. For the sake of PF, i rather debaters not spread, more of a traditional judge in that realm.
Columbus High '19 and University of Georgia '23. I've done speech all four years, having success both on the local and national circuit, qualifying to both TOC and NSDA Nationals.
Though I did speech, I understand how PF flows at a general level.
Some ground rules:
1. I can handle speed just fine. However, if the argument you're trying to make is really important, slow down so it leaves more of an impact. The quality of your words is more important than the quantity.
2. Though I will be flowing, I am more on the lay side when it comes to tech. If you use terminology that I don't understand, then I will probably make a face and put it aside. If you see this, fix it by explaining it in a more "lay" fashion.
3. Everything said in Final Focus, MUST BE in Summary. Any new arguments brought up in FF that was not said in Summary will not be weighed.
4. In Summary, give me clear voters on why you won this debate. Make my job easier by explicitly telling me what should be weighed the most in the round. Fail to do this and it will be harder for you to win my ballot.
5. It's fine to be assertive, being rude isn't.
6. Puns are great. However, any discriminatory remarks made will result in a 22 for speaks and a good ol' talking to with your coach.
7. Time yourselves. I'm lazy.
8. I will make mistakes, and if I do, my b.
If you have a question or anything like that, don't be scared to ask me. I'm a pretty chill dude.
