This will be my first event to judge. I am looking forward to learning from student presentations while giving fair scores based on performances. I am not familiar with jargon, but I am an excellent listener who will base scoring off of the rubric. I am a former elementary school teacher with 13 years experience making me familiar and capable in comprehending rapid speech. I prefer a more conversational pace and need a voice that is projected. I take many notes and will do my best to judge fairly and consistently.

I have zero experience when it comes to speech and debate, so being extremely clear in your deleivery is important to me. Another thing that I am looking for is for all jargon/technical language is explained. I want to hear arguements that are easy to follow so that any person will be able to listen and understand what is being said. I am very open minded and want to hear your style while you debate. When it comes to deciding who gets the win, I go with the team that had a coherent arguement that dosen't rehash the same points over and over again. I enjoy hearing claims and counterclaims that are backed with hard evidence rather than personal opinion. If you have any specific questions, please ask before the round starts. I would be more than happy to answer as this is my first time judging. Please during arguments be polite towards the other team, and judge. I look forward to seeing you debate! This is my third time judging a debate. I do have additional exposure to debate through my daughter, now in her third year of debate/forensics. My education is in business however I have spent the last 10 years of my career in Higher Education.
I will do my best to judge each round fairly and to do that I expect the following from you.
-- I am newer so please don’t use any debate jargon as it may be lost on me.
-- Provide clear and understandable arguments and supporting evidence.
-- Please speak at a reasonable speed and enunciate clearly. If I miss your argument because you're not clear, it could cost you the round.
-- Keep it professional and respectful. Any demeaning or disrespectful behavior could cost you the round.

Hello!
I competed for three years on the ACTAA & NSDA circuit in multiple IEs & Congress. While I didn’t compete in debate much beyond IPDA, I have gained quite a bit of experience this past year as a judge.
General Etiquette
- I don't mind if you time yourself, just keep in mind my times are going to be what goes on the ballot
- Stand when you speak
- Both the competitors asking questions and the ones answering should be standing during cross exams/questioning blocks
- If you have extenuating circumstances around your physical mobility & can't be standing up and down like that, just let me know, it's no biggie

Congressional:
The two things I'm looking for in congress are
a) stage presence-- How dependent are you on your legal pad/laptop? How much are you looking up and addressing the chamber as opposed to just reading from a script? How well are you using your space?
and b) clash-- Past the first aff and neg speeches, you should be debating previous points at least a little bit. Bringing up new information is all well and good, but you also need to be refuting points from the delegates on the opposite side. I'm personally a fan of calling someone out by name to refute and combat their point. The more clash the better.
I generally don’t flow arguments in congress unless there is something peculiar about the debate or the comment I have to you specifically pertains to the argument. I’ll really just give feedback on how you handled yourself during the speech
As a closing note to keep in mind: I understand that congressional legislation can get political and you're going to be inclined to argue with what you personally agree with, but you should understand that debate is not about what you believe, it's about your ability to argue. There are going to be times when you have to argue for something you don't agree with and refusing to do so is going to harm the flow of debate.

- You should also give a brief description/explanation on whatever you propose. Some people use different definitions of the same thing & we all need to be on the same page
2. Definitions
- I have auditory processing issues. Make sure you say your definitions clearly & don’t rush through them. Help me make sure I have a crystal clear understanding about the basis of your argument.
3. Any Identified Burdens

5. Claims & paired cards
- Take care not to spread/rush through your sources. I value evidence highly and want to know your cards
6. Rebuttal
- when it comes to rebuttal speeches, the way I flow gets less structured– I will write down pretty much anything I hear that obviously pertains to a previous argument so that I can go back & analyze if any points were dropped/missed & to determine what point flows to who
C. Speaker Points
- While I appreciate a bit of engaging words and style, it’s not necessary. As long as you can get through your speeches with minimal stumbles and with relative smoothness you’ll get good numbers
- It is poor sportsmanship to bring up new points late into the argument when your opponent doesn’t have time to properly refute. This will result in low speaker points.
- It is even worse sportsmanship to make comments about your opponent’s debate style or competency during off-the-clock roadmaps. I have seen this happen too many times & I’m completely sick of it. This will result in low speaker points.
- I will be 'grading' speaks points based off of the following: Delivery; Courtesy; Appropriate Tone; Organization; Logic; Support (if needed based on the weighing mech); Cross Exam; and Refutation. Some things, like organization and delivery, are more important than the others, like cross.

I have a background in the performance arts with a degree in speech and drama from Missouri State back when it was called Southwest Missouri State University. I am familiar with the mechanics of flowing but have limited practical experience. I do have the benefit of working with a very well-trained group of veteran debaters who've been assisting me as I navigate these new responsibilities. My philosophy when it comes to judging debate is to listen closely, script frantically, and remain objective in my analysis. Bentonville West High School English Teacher
I have been an English teacher for eight years- specializing in writing studies. I want to see your speaking & delivery skills as much as I want to see your arguments developed. Make clear arguments and focus on line-by-line analysis. When it comes to splitting hairs for a win, I will go with the team with line-by-line argumentation.
Adapt your case structure/speaking style, to adhere to this request. I'm a speaker and writer. I expect solid speaking skills. I can deal with fast speaking as long as you are clear. If you do speak quickly, make sure you're clear. If I miss your argument because you're not clear, it could cost you the round.
Be sure to read arguments that have a clear link to the resolution and framework. If I don't understand the argument itself or don't understand how it links, there is no way I can evaluate it.
You're not going to win rounds with me in cross. Just because you bring a point up in cross does not mean I will flow it. If you want it considered, bring it up in your rebuttal. Keep it professional. A true debater can give their points without sounding demeaning or disrespectful. It will cost you the round with me. Learn to disagree respectfully. On that note, while not a debate or forensics coach, I am not novice at understanding the intricacies of argumentation. Don't use debate jargon in these rounds. Speak to me as if I had never heard the word debate before. That's the design of these styles. Your judge could be anybody- respect them but also understand that if they're not persuaded, you didn't do your task.
If you have any questions, please ask me before the round.
Avoid arguments that are homophobic, sexist, racist, or offensive in any way. Be respectful to your opponent and judge. Use professional language at all times.

As a judge, I am looking first and foremost at speaking skill. A well planned and spoken speech ranks high on my radar. I also place value on evidence based speeches. Your evidence should be current and relevant. Confidence, kindness, and professionalism are key, as well.

I am a parent judge and former debater in Student Congress and Model U.N. at the high school and college levels.
I am looking for speakers to be clear and concise. Be poised, organized, and confident. When making arguments I look for good research/statistical data that supports the points that you are trying to make. Speakers should be easily heard; projection and pace are important. Speaking too fast or using too many ums or ahs can detract from the points you are trying to make.
My advice is as follows:
Take a deep breath before you start - it provides your brain with oxygen and will help you think/process.
Speak slowly, but not too slow. Make sure the judges and your audience can understand you. If you speak to fast we might miss an important argument, point, etc. Take breaths as you speak after each sentence so that your speech is not a like a single run-on sentence.
Be confident. Do your research, study, prepare. Try to make sure that you are ready. The more organized and prepared you are the better you will be.
Learn something new each time and try to improve each time you speak. Read the judges comments and use those to help you the next time.
Finally, and most importantly, have fun! It is serious and you learn a lot but make sure you have a good time. Make connections with your peers. Enjoy life and make good memories that will last a lifetime!

I am a new parent judge and have only judged at one debate/tournament.
I would encourage clear, but passionate speaking. Please make sure and use a speed you think a new judge can understand.Never assume I have knowledge of your specific topic. If you don't think a child would understand it, assume I may not as well.

Decorum is of utmost importance - both verbal and nonverbal.
This should be a civil discourse between competitors.
Do NOT attack your opponent personally - attack the resolution and the claims.
Debate is a speaking activity, so, no, I do not want you to share/email/drop, etc. your case to me. I will judge what you say, not what's written in your case.
Speaking style is also critical. Do not spread or even talk fast - if I can't understand or if I struggle to keep up with what you're saying two things happen: (1) I will miss key information and (2) I will get frustrated and not be able to judge you. If I miss an argument because you are speaking too fast and are not clear, then you didn't make it.
Do not be monotone in your delivery and look up during speeches. KNOW YOUR CASE!!!
You should not have so much information that it requires you to speak faster than normal conversation pace/speed. Be efficient with your words.
I want to know how to judge the round, so supply and use your MW or V/VC or Framework!
I want to see clear links between your claims and your WM, V/VC, Framework.
I want clear CWI's.
You need to clearly and effectively refute all of your opponent's claims. Debate requires CLASH - if there is no clash, then you have not debated. It is the responsibility of each debater to add to and create clash throughout the round.
I flow the round, so I am well aware of what has/has not been dropped or deconstructed - don't claim your opponent has dropped points when they haven't!!! This can cost you the ballot!
Debate the resolution you have been given and nothing else!
Do not have a side debate about who has the best evidence - present the evidence and I'll decide as the judge, I don't need you to try and persuade me - or any other issues not related to the given resolution.
I don't need a road map - you should be clear enough in your round that I can clearly follow you.
Have fun!!! The world will not come to an end if you do not win this round! Always be looking for what you can learn from each round you debate.
Win. Lose. Learn!
On a lighter note, my favorite K-pop bands are The Rose, EXO, BTS, Seventeen, NCT 127 & NCT Dream -- if you work K-pop lyrics into your case/refutation, you won't receive any extra points, but it'll make me smile ????!

I have been working with the debate team at our school for 4 year and judging for at least 3. I am a High School/College teacher in both US and World History. This means I am very well versed in history. I am well versed in research and bias of sources. In Debate rounds I want well researched cases with strong evidence. I also like connections, your evidence needs to connect to your points and support your claims, free floating evidence does not apply anywhere in the round. I expect a synopsis for voters as well, if you don't give me voters I will use my own observations to way the round, which may not be how you want me to vote. That being said, being too pushy may push me away from your position. Give voters that I can consider and persuade me why you should win on the logic and evidence of the case. I am not a fan of spreading. I would rather have you present a case with a few strong points than a lot of little ones. I do not like it when competitors are rude to one another. No matter how heated the battle or frustrated you get, politeness goes a long way with me.

This is my first time judging forensics competition. I'm excited to be here and watch the students perform! When I was in high school, I competed in several choir competitions at the state level. I was also in the University of Arkansas choir. 'm somewhat familiar with competitions/audientions and how they work. For the past 8 years, I've been in the marketing field working with big suppliers such as Kimberly Clark. In my role, we have to sell in ideas and give presentations to small and large audiences.
Speaking and delivery skills are key in giving a speech. I want to understand the words that are coming out of the presenters mouth. Eye contact with those in the room are also important. Keep me engaged. Structure and flow are also important. I want to understand the story you are trying to tell me. I want to see personality in your delivery.
You will loose points if you are unclear and your diction is not crisp and If your delivery feels unclear and not easy to understand. Pace and delivering your presentation too fast could also count towards lost points. I want to understand want you are trying to tell me. Show me your personality:)

Be civil. Debate is open to anyone, an educational activity that expands your thinking and speaking skills. If you can’t put aside any prejudices you may hold for the duration of the round, then you don’t belong on the circuit, and I will be happy to tell you that.

I judge based on flow. Speaker points will not affect the outcome of the round. That said, if your speech is unorganized and sloppy, then that could make it harder for me to flow, which could lose you the round

Logic and technical arguments will always move me more than conjecture and emotional anecdotes. They have their place but support your arguments with real evidence as well.

The PF circuit is becoming more progressive. If. Theory and off case (Kritik) arguments are valid, but must be well justified and well linked.

Don’t spread. Especially on the novice circuit.

Make sure you connect your values through the entire round, don’t put them at the beginning of your speech because you think it’s required, and then never bring it up again. Don’t assume that I understand your link to the value.

LD is also becoming more progressive. Don’t be afraid to use Theory or Kritiks but still make sure that it’s airtight.

Start an email chain before your speech. You don’t get to start spreading as a way to stop your opponent from understanding you, If I can't understand your speech, or I don't have your case in front of me, I can't flow it.

I want to see clash, bring up points that your fellow representatives have brought up. Congress is not a forensics event, so we need to be debating, not acting.

Do not speak for the sake of speaking. It is painfully obvious if your speech is a filler fest with no original content or clash. These speeches will not get you very far and will hurt your chances with me.

I judged many different forensic events over the last two years, both online and in person. My favorites are POI and storytelling. I appreciate a well written and performed piece, particularly light-hearted ones. My least favorite event is Extempt - if I could follow politics and current events I'd be a debate judge! I will still try my best. I always find something positive to say and I try to offer constructive suggestions. I want to watch you learn and get better. I think debate and forensics can offer skills well beyond school. I am looking forward to another year.
