• some pretty basic things: don't call me judge, post-rounding won't change the ballot, time yourself
• the stuff you read to me matters less compared to how good of a debate you'll have, i'm good with any debate you want to have so long as it's not problematic.
• please keep the flow neat this is huge for speaker points
• i will avoid intervening at all costs, a debate where i am forced to intervene was a bad debate
• i dont read speech docs unless you tell me to read a card so don't expect me to flow off the speech doc

Middle School Debate:

TLDR: I weigh heavily on clash, that is, organized, clear, and logical clash that incorporates well established claims.

Content:

• Don't try to run anything that you don't understand just to sound smart

• If you think you're being slick with your arguments, chances are you aren't and I can see right through it

• Weighing/impact are more important than you think

• Nothing you say has merit until you actually give it some

• Your links are the scaffolding of your case

• If your case doesn't have a logical chain of argumentation, you don't really have a case.

• Don’t make source merit arguments (ex. Washington Post is better than the New York Times)

• Attack framework: weighing mechanisms and definitions, if there is disagreement

• Prove why your framework is better

Delivery:

• I much prefer a speaker to follow a set and organized structure and be very clear as to what they are talking about in that specific moment (aka you should signpost)

• If two people had a similar speech point-wise, I will give more points to people who provide clash outside of their speech - through POI's and heckles

I am a new parent judge with a little judging experience, so I am here to learn. However, my child does parliamentary debate so I am familiar with the structure. I am more of a truth judge than a tech judge, and no spreading would be great. Little to no jargon would be helpful. Any discriminatory language including racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. will warrant a ballot for the other team. Keep language respectful and non-profane.

I am a lay judge, although I understand LD and the rules and expectations. I value truth over tech and I expect solid cases, and logical refs. I don't place too much emphasis on value clash. I don't want to see overly aggressive debate, be a good sport. I will not flow if you spread, I will not evaluate progressive argumentation. Weighing, impacts, and signposting with good evidence and solid refs will win you my ballot.

General

Tech > Truth (I will only vote off the flow)

Choose your strongest argument (least challenged) and explain why that argument both

a) wins you the round

b) is better than your opponent's

Your goal is to have only your offense left at the end of the round (your argument and why that matters)

Explain why the other team's responses to your argument don't work

Point out all the holes in your opponent's offense (their argument and why it matters) and directly compare how good your offense is to their bad one

Weigh (tell me what's at stake, eg. # of lives and why I should vote for your position)

You can argue anything UNLESS

It's discriminatory/exclusionary in any way (Loss + 20 speaks or stated tournament procedures)

Link weighing > impact weighing

Link weighing = explaining why your link (reason) outweighs the opponent's

If debates over specific cards happen, please give me a reason to prefer your evidence. I don't want to intervene by reading it.

I did LD debate and Congress in high school for 3 years. I remember going to State Quals and was alternate for Districts. I noticed the hardware trophies are the same from my time still!

I am a mother of 3, and for my profession- I sell Enterprise Technology to corporations. I am a dancer and I enjoy traveling. I have a freshman this year who loves Policy Debate, so I decided to help as a judge. I am looking forward to a great debate today, with talented young minds who will show utmost professionalism and collaboration! Here are some of my Judging preferences:

Tech before truth. It's human nature to have preferences toward certain arguments but I try my best to listen and judge objectively. Unresolved debates are bad debates.

Speed is great, but clarity is even better. Less is more!

Be smart. I rather hear great analytical arguments than terrible cards.

I am a parent of two students who participate in debate.

I will usually vote on a few things --- how each case stands by the end of the debate and how each team refutes the other side's case at the end of the debate.

I look for clarity and great speaking. If I can't understand an argument I will not note it and therefore I cannot vote for it.

For timing I expect you all to time yourself, and to keep track of each other's prep time.

I am a first year parent judge. Looking for clear arguments with good refutals and defense. Preferably no spreading. Good luck!

I prefer clarity over speed. Clearly and concisely delivering a few effective argument is much better than many vague and ineffective arguments.

Be courtesy to your opponent. During the cross, allow other side to also ask questions. Too many follow-up questions will cost you points.

Stick to the time limit. I generally allow both sides to finish the sentence after the timer stops, but no more than that.

Former Policy debator

Frequently judge in both speech and debate events (judging as of 2017).

In events involving cross-x, fine with rapid fire style of questioning so long as it's civil and not rude.

For Debate events, particularly PoFo and Policy, tend to vote based on Topicality. Flow judge, ok with spreading (though can be problematic with virtual tournaments if bandwidth/audio gets choppy).

For I.E. Speech events, determine rankings based on overall cohesiveness of supporting arguments, clear layout and roadmap, body language, facial expressions, pacing of speech, vocal tonal variation, and delivery. For OO/Duo Interp, clear transitions and being able to follow performer(s) interpretation of piece, along with all other criteria listed above for I.E.

I am a novice in judging.

I would love to see debaters speak clearly and audibly, using eye contact would be great.

Don't forget to make good use of the three methods of persuasion, especially logos. Support team members and make connections with each other's contention and be consistent. 

I want to see more relevant facts from debaters. Please make sure your facts are valid.

Please deliver your arguments clearly and logically. It should be apparent from your presentation that you have really understood the argument you are making and not merely reading out prepared remarks. I would highly appreciate the analysis in the end of why you should win in the final focus based on a clear accounting of why your contentions were better or remained unanswered from the opposing team.

Although I am new to being a debate judge, I take this role seriously. I know as a parent of a debater how hard you work to prepare for these tournaments.

I value the strength of the evidence, clear and well paced speaking ability, and respect of your opponents. I look at how well you are able to formulate a response and how you react to opposing arguments.

I don't particularly have extensive experience in debate, however, I have judged a few tournaments, mostly PF and LD. Please absolutely do not spread. Also in events with cross-x, I prefer less rapid fire style questioning. I really value signposting and clear voter issues. Please be respectful to your opponents. I'm willing to believe any argument in the round as long as it's properly backed up and defended.

About me:

Judge style: Team

I want you to be respectful no matter what. Keep it professional.

Please go a little slow, treat me as a flay judge. I will be writing down notes but if you talk too fast, I won't be able to write it down.

In the end, I would say I care about weighing the most. Why is your case more important than your opponents? What will be done if I vote for you? I want you to answer these questions clearly.

Preferably give an off-time roadmap. It makes it more clear on what I need to be listening to.

Make your arguments clear. I don't know much about this topic so I want you to tell me and explain your contention, depending on how you execute it, I will be voting for you.

Judging style: Individual speaker

I care about your case and confidence. Know what you saying and don't be afraid. During cross ask questions and defend your case to the best of your abilities.

Keep cross professional, I don't want any rude sexist, racist, homophobic comments/remarks during cross. I will deduct your speaks greatly if you do. Don't interrupt the opponent when they're talking. I also don't want to spend a whole minute on a question during cross. If you spend too long on something, ask to move on.

General:

Be clear and confident, but also make sure you have fun in what you're doing. Just have a good time and be nice to the opponents.

I love debating and hearing debates :-)

The primary aspect I judge on is the persuasive capability of the debater/s. So, present your positions in a clear & cogent narrative, speak confidently and showcase your mastery of the topic, especially in Rebuttal and CF rounds.

At the same time, I also pay attention to the flow. It will be difficult to make a comeback from multiple dropped or insufficiently addressed flows.

Keep your focus till... well the Final Focus. I wont decide on the winner till the last word is spoken.

If you are speaking too fast for me, I will call CLEAR. In general, clarity and efficiency trumps over speed & quantity.
