Quality over quantity. This means do not just try to give as much as possible as quickly as possible. I prefer to have fewer arguments that are better supported with real world examples and references to include quotes, data, and valid research references. Yes, I am open to being in the email chain. Detail and support are key. Be sure to address all areas of your arguments and counter in a way that really addresses what your opponent brought up. This attention to detail can make a difference.

In speeches and other associated areas be sure you remember the original audience in addition to the actual audience when speaking. Be clear, concise, and use the appropriate voice in all instances. Keep me interested. It should be as if I am hearing your speech for the first time.

If it is impromptu speaking, still try and be organized, creative, and clear.

Be sure to attack the arguments and concepts not the individual.

We are given a judging rubric and I will stick with that above everything.

Hi my name is Joe Atkin he/him. I have never judged before but I'm looking forward to it! I will be paying attention to a general attempt at memorization, delivery, weight, the content of the speech itself, grammar, and pacing

Debate- I always choose a winner based on rebuttals and final speeches. I favor the team that shows the most clash while also defending their own contentions. I can handle fast talking as long as the debater can speak quickly while still being intelligible.

Congress- I appreciate a good road map in the speech intro and solid examples that support your contentions. I also highly rate representatives that are active questioners.

Speech- Clear organization is very important, I need to be able to follow your speech. As far as delivery, I really notice and appreciate speakers who incorporate vocal variety and make consistent eye contact.

I enjoy judging debate and speech competitions. I value clarity in all events and I’m willing to appreciate an unconventional approach in an event, if it is effective. As an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Utah (for nearly forty years), and as a Registered Patent Attorney in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (for over thirty-five years) and as an Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah (for nearly twenty years), I’ve judged and observed many professionals and students and their oral advocacy skills (or lack thereof). I’m always looking to help improve competitors’ oral skills and performance.

I want a clear, concise, well supported argument that clearly responds to an opponent in later arguments. Spewing or talking too fast usually is not clear and does not present a compelling argument.

I'm a first year head coach at Skyline High School. I have three experience as an assistant coach. I've mostly worked with speech events, but also congress and Public Forum with limited experience in Policy and LD.

Policy:

Overall: I don't believe I'm experienced enough to understand theory or be able to strongly evaluate Kritiks.

Speed: I'm OK with speed as long as you email me your speeches (tfhenry@granitesd.org) , but please slow down for your taglines.

RFD: I typically base my decision on the the stock issues of the plan on the Affs ability to defend it and prove that it is better than the status quo. The NEG wins if they can prove the plan is worst then the status quo or the status quo is better than the plan.

I am a lay judge but I have judged before. I appreciate slow, logical debating with good warrant comparison. Please do not run theory or Ks and explain your arguments clearly in your summary and final focus and signpost clearly. Please define important acronyms that the average person would not know. And please be polite to each other and have fun!

I am a policy judge. I debated for 3-4 years, coached for 3 more, and have judged for 4ish years now (all policy).

I can understand spewing/spreading/whatever else you call it.

I do not flow cx so if you make a good point you need to bring it up in your next speech or I will not flow it through. If I am typing during cx, I am probably catching up on my notes from the previous speech.

I like judging on impact calc, but the role of the debate is the most important thing to me (if aff or neg does not fulfill their roles, it is an automatic loss). I also invite you to write the ballot for me (tell me what arguments you won and why, what arguments they dropped, etc). Structure your rebuttal speeches that way.

This is my 2nd year judging at debate tournaments. Last year I judged mostly speech events and this year I have started judging debate events (mostly PF). I was a political science major in college, and I am a cardiologist.

I judge based on whether an argument is persuasive, backed up by facts and references, ability to counter opponents points, eye contact, body language, and clarity of the oratory itself. Even if an argument is valid and persuasive, it really helps when backed up with examples, facts, references. I strive to provide helpful feedback and really appreciate all the work that you all put into these events.

Things in order of what you're looking for:

Spreading - do it. Go quick, make good arguments and be efficient. If you can't spread without being incomprehensible I will say "clear" during your speech. Slow down if that happens.

My goal is to judge from the flow - everything here is pretty basic but make smart arguments and debate from the flow and you can win in most circumstances

Tech over truth - don't drop arguments even if they are bad. If they are bad, they should be easy to beat.

Condo: I lean to it being good but can be convinced

Theory (besides condo): I lean towards it being a reason to reject the argument, not the team, but can be convinced

Ks: I'm fine with them, but I was not a K debater. Of course I debated against them all the time so I am familiar, but if your theory of power is non-traditional and your impacts are something that I've maybe never heard before slow down.

Try to avoid a K without an alt, or do something like kick the alt. Most Ks are super non-unique without an alt (obviously if your K is more performative this may not apply).

Non-topical affs/framework: This can be a really good debate but normally ends up being bad. Interact with arguments on the flow to win. Fairness might be an impact but normally education is a better impact. I'm not very sympathetic to the "get your education in other rounds" argument.

Cards are important to me. If the debate is good and close it can come down to the cards. I don't like when taglines are longer than cards, that probably means you're lying.

Neg split: New flows in the 2NC are ok (CPs are a little iffy), but don't do new flows in the 1NR. CX over new flows is important.
