Difference in Divisions

What's the difference between JV, Novice and Rookie? (Updated 8-24)

Junior Varsity Division

The Junior Varsity division is intended for second year debaters who are not yet ready for varsity debates.   It can also be a place you put advanced novice debaters (maybe those who did middle school debate) who are ready for arguments outside of the GFCA packet.  There will be no limitations on arguments in the Junior Varsity Policy Debate division.

Juniors or seniors in their fourth year of high school competition may judge this division.  Please put in the notes if your judge is a student judge.

Novice Division

The novice division is intended for first year debaters.  This is a great division for students who may have attended either of the GFCA Training Tournaments or have competed in enough practice debates that they are ready for a full policy debate.   This division will use the GFCA Novice Packet with argument limitations.  For this tournament, students in the novice division are only allowed to read from the following files:

Death Penalty Affirmative
Death Penalty Negative
Movements DA
Court Packing DA

You can download the GFCA Packet Dropbox folder.

Juniors or seniors in their third or fourth year of high school competition may judge this division.  Please put in the notes if your judge is a student judge.

Rookie Division

We are excited to offer a ROOKIE division of policy debate.  This division was adopted in 2020 by the GFCA to help students ease into policy debate.  It offers a modified version of a full debate to help students in their first four tournaments.  The primary goal of the rookie division is learning.  If your students attended debate camps or did middle school debate, this is not the division for them.

For this tournament, students in the rookie division are only allowed to read from the following files:

Death Penalty Affirmative
Death Penalty Negative
Movements DA

You can download the GFCA Packet Dropbox folder.

*For coaches who were not at the fall meeting, "Rookie" is a new policy division below Novice. It's intended for students in their first four tournaments ever. Middle school, summer institute, and other event tournaments do count. Basically, this division is designed for the very newest of debaters. We think this is especially important as some schools might start activities later than others this year.

Juniors or seniors in their third or fourth year of high school competition may judge this division.  Please put in the notes if your judge is a student judge.

UPDATE 9/3 -- The Rookie division will be using the normal times (8-3-5) rather than the ones in the GFCA bylaws.
