Berkeley International Parliamentary Debate Invitational
2024 — NSDA Campus, CA/US
Topic Strike Procedure
On Saturday, all debaters and judges should be in the NSDA Campus room a few minutes before the round time listed in the schedule. (Sunday will be similar, but you'll get instructions in the main Zoom.)
The live doc will announce three topics/motions per round by the round start time.
At the scheduled round time, if both teams and the judge are in the room, they should select a topic as follows:
1. The Opposition has one minute to strike a topic, which may be announced orally or in the text chat.
2. The Government has one minute to strike a topic, which may be announced orally or in the text chat.
3. The remaining topic should be pasted in the text chat, and 20 minutes prep begins. The judge may take a break until round start.
If both teams are in the room, but the judge is not:
- Send an email to berkeleyparli@gmail.com, with subject line "[Division] [Judge Last Name] missing," e.g. "Novice Judge Obama missing."
- Proceed with strikes without the judge, as follows.
- The Opposition has one minute to strike a topic, which must be announced in the text chat, e.g. "Opp strikes motion 1."
- The Government has one minute to strike a topic, which must be announced in the text chat, e.g. "Gov strikes motion 2."
- Paste the remaining topic in the chat, along with the round start time, e.g. "Chosen: 3. Capitalism is unjust. Round starts 12:31."
- Begin 20 minutes prep.
If one team and the judge are in the room at the scheduled time, but the other team is not:
- Send an email to berkeleyparli@gmail.com, with the division and names of the missing team, and the judge name, in the subject line.
- The team in the room has one minute to pick the topic, and then starts 20 minutes prep.
- For Round 1 only, please wait up to ten minutes after the scheduled round start time for the second team to arrive before selecting a topic.
