This is my first time judging. How does this work?

When we receive the ballots to hand out, we will call out last names. Please come forward to us when you hear your name called and we will give you a ballot.

I don’t know much about the different types of events. How do I judge them?

We will give oral judging instructions. Instructions are also available online at scu.tabroom.com

I thought I was here to judge a specific event and you gave me a ballot for a different one. Is this okay?

Yes. It is important that we mix up who judges what events so that the children do not have the same judges multiple times. Also, it is helpful to the community to have judges that are trained in all events, not just one or two.

I got a ballot but I am unfamiliar with this campus. Where do I go?

The room and building your round is in is located in the top right corner of your ballot. Maps of the campus have been provided in the front near the judging instructions. There will also be a student standing next to the maps to answer more direct questions you may have.

When will the next round start?

We have provided schedules in the front of the room near the maps and the judging instructions that should help answer this question. In the event that we are running late, we will be announcing every update on the schedule we have and will have the rounds start as soon as possible.

All this judging has made me hungry! Where can I go for food?

Depends on what you’re hungry for! A light breakfast will be provided. For lunch, there are many options within a short walk from the judge’s room. Some options include Roundtable, Taco Bell, Wicked Chicken (chicken wings), Ike’s (sandwiches), Pizza My Heart, and Safeway. There is also a café located on campus. Feel free to ask directions if you’re getting hungry!

I have left the judges room and I have encountered a serious problem. Who do I call?

The tournament help desk is (805) 358-9597.  For medical emergencies please dial 911.

Can the students use computers during a debate?

Public forum, policy and CD, students may use computers in-round with internet off. Parli may use internet/computers during prep.

Do I tell the students who won at the end of the debate?

You can for debate. You cannot for Individual Events (speech). You are not required to say who won at the end but you can if you would like to.

Am I the only person judging this round or will there be more judges with me?

In preliminary rounds there will be only one judge. Elimination rounds will have more judges.
