Debate Format and Topics

Q: What does "Topic 1 is for Round 1 & 2" mean?

A: Teams will debate the same prepared topic in both Round 1 and Round 2, but they will switch sides. This means if they argued as the Proposition (Affirmative) in Round 1, they will argue as the Opposition (Negative) in Round 2, and vice versa. They must be prepared for both sides.

Q: Are there separate motions for the High School Division?

A: No. All competing divisions, including High School, will be debating the same prepared topic for these rounds.

Device and Research Rules

Q: Are electronic devices (laptops, phones, tablets) allowed in the debate room?

A: No. Electronic devices are not allowed. All notes, evidence, and research materials must be printed or handwritten before the debate and brought into the room. The only exception is that a device may be used strictly for timing the speeches, but it cannot be used for communication or accessing external information.

Q: Can debaters use devices to research during the preparation time for the impromptu motion?

A: No. Research is strictly prohibited for impromptu motions. Debaters must rely solely on their general knowledge and critical thinking during the preparation period.

Dress Code

Q: What is the required dress code for the students?

A: The required attire is formal casual. This means students should dress as if they are attending a school event.

Friday: School Uniform and appropriate shoes.
- Saturday: Harvard Sweatshirt (which will be given on Friday) and trousers / jeans. NO TORN / RIPPED JEANS will be allowed.
- Sunday: School Formal Uniform.

The goal is to look neat, professional, and avoid anything that could be distracting to judges or competitors and suitable for school setting and events. NO SHORTS FOR BOYS/GIRLS OR SHORT DRESSES FOR GIRLS.
