Pilot Evidence Rules for This GGSA Parli Tournament Only

A. Debaters should primarily rely on logic and general knowledge.

B. Reference to published sources is allowed but should be limited. All evidence should be transcribed on a team’s evidence document. Judges should weigh their decision primarily on an argument’s logical reasoning, not on citations or quotes.

C. Debaters are responsible for presenting evidence with integrity and accuracy.

1) Teams will share with their opponents their evidence document at the debate’s start. For in-person tournaments, the evidence document should be on paper. The opponents may retain the paper document during the round.

2) Teams will give the judge their evidence documents after the debate ends. Judges are not expected to read the evidence document upon receipt but may refer to it to confirm a team's compliance with evidentiary rules. The judge should consider information on the evidence document that is presented in a speech, but not as additional evidence to prove claims.

3) On the team evidence document, debaters should cite published sources and empirical evidence, providing full source citations--title, author, publication date, and the quotation this information is based on (be it in a sentence or paragraph). The transcription must be done during preparation time, by hand, and without ellipses. Teams do not need to cite the URLs, but they should be noted and must be made available on request after the round.

Important Notes:

1) While JV and V teams have 20 minutes of prep, Novice GGSA teams have 30 minutes of prep, with 5 minute constructive speeches and 3 minute rebuttals (5-5-5-5-3-3) instead of the JV/V times of 7-8-8-8-4-5.

2) During prep time, debaters may use the internet, take notes by hand, and use those paper notes during the debate. No computer access during debate UNLESS you have disabilities requiring additional computer accommodation that your coach has already cleared it with the director(s) in advance. Phones, however, can be used by all as timers. Although JV and Varsity debaters can NOT receive real-time assistance with their arguments from persons other than their partner, Novices may consult with Novice teammates or other HS debaters, competing or not, at the tournament. Prep with a coach is NOT allowed for any division.

3) Debaters: “Prep” times reflect when debaters should be present in the prep area and ready to go. Please arrive ten minutes before the "topic" time. They should already be in their round room at the listed start time; forfeit is ten minutes later. Ex. For Novice Round 1, novices should be in prep area at 8:20 when pairings will be blasted. Topic is read at 8:30, debaters should be in their room at 9:00, and forfeit is at 9:10 for a no-show.

4) Judges: Note the difference between prep time and round start time; the debaters will not arrive in the room until the time scheduled for the debate itself. Please be in your assigned room five minutes before the round. ONLY press the round START time on your Tabroom e-ballot once both teams are there. (Those without ballots should use this time to grab refreshments, check their devices, and finish prior round comments.)

5) Protests: All protests should be brought immediately to the attention of event co-directors in the Parli Tab Room. All wishing to protest must bring an adult, ideally the coach. The burden of proof is on the protesting team/coach; they need to supply evidence and specify the rule broken.

6) Generative artificial intelligence should not be cited as a source; while something like ChatGPT may be used to guide students to articles, ideas, and sources, the original source of any quoted or paraphrased evidence must be available if requested. Students are prohibited from quoting or paraphrasing text directly from generative AI sources like ChatGPT in events in which speeches must be the original created work of a competitor.

7) Don't be alarmed if you come to your assigned room, and there is another ongoing debate in the process of wrapping up. Just wait until it is done. Note that each round alternates between one Novice debate and one JV/Varsity debate.

8) All times are approximate. Whenever possible, we will move rounds up in order to expedite the tournament. Sometimes delays occur—please remember that our volunteer-run organization does its best!
