All Paradigms: Show HideThis paradigm structure is a work in progress; I am far removed from my competing days, so I understand that I am not at the cutting edge of arguments, and I don't always get to hear good counterarguments. As a competitor, I despised changing my strategy because of a judge. I understand that you undergo copious amounts of preparation, and I implore you to debate the way you feel comfortable. There is no worse regret than losing a round because you felt compelled to do something you weren't comfortable doing. That being said, here are some loose opinions on debate related activities.
Critical vs. Policy: No, I don't hate critical arguments. Feel free to run whatever arguments you like. I'm mostly familiar with the critical arguments that are proliferate in the debate community. However, just like all "policy only" judges and teams, I will interrogate the links, internal links, and alt solvency. Running a critical case is not an excuse for poor debating. Understand your arguments.
Theory and Topicality: In many rounds, the majority of teams run theory and topicality as filler, and while I don't particularly care for this strategy, I respect that you have the right to do so. However, if you are going to really commit and bring theory into the final speeches, there has to be evident abuse or a violation. Theory and T are great tools, but they're overused; don't use them because you can't use anything else, or I won't feel compelled to consider them at all. I don't have particular opinions, except for conditionality (multiple worlds) bad, which I despise. If you run condo in the 2AC, have a serious compelling claim. Otherwise, it will be a serious uphill battle and (probably) a waste of time.
Speed/Clarity: Like most judges, I am relatively good at deciphering what you're spreading. If I can't, I'll say "clear" at least once. If I say it twice and there is no change, I will more than likely stop flowing. Of course, I will flow everything I understand, but there is an implicit agreement between teams and judges that you will spread as fast possible, and I will flow as much as possible, to the extent that it is beneficial to all involved.
Arg Preferences: I wouldn't include this, but I've been asked it more than I expected. I do not have arguments I give preferences to. I give preferences to good arguments. Running a certain type of Cap isn't going to win you the round.
Speaker Points: I see no reason to not be generous with speaker points. I will generally start at 30 and go down one point if you are either spreading too fast to comprehend, or are rude to an opponent. Otherwise, unless one person/team has an amazing performance, I will give 30s and 29s.
I know this is a very brief, and by no means comprehensive list. If you have questions, comments, or confusion about anything listed hear, please feel free to ask me pre-round. I'd like to think I'm very approachable, and want to make this activity as fun as I can within the scope of my role.
I am open to all arguments and will do my best to adapt to you. I am very focused on my flow so be mindful when moving from one card/argument to the next to leave a gap or say "and" to clearly indicate motion. Slow down on authors and dates please.
CX: I'm a policy maker but am always open to other arguments. My main concern is whether or not you've proven the resolution is true or false.
Topicality/theory: I default competing interp. If there aren't good extensions or if it's a wash I probably won't vote here.
K: If the lit is obscure you'll need to explain it to me a little more than popular Ks. Feel free to ask.
Case: I want the aff to extend in every speech. I will likely not vote exclusively on case defense, so negs please have another voter.
LD: I'm very line-by-line driven, and focus on the flow. Be very specific with voters.
Value/criterion: Not a must-have, and in many rounds I judge I find debaters will spend time on this without ever impacting it as a voter. If you go for this, that is totally fine, but give a clear reason why it matters in determining the resolution's truth.
Pre-standards/observations: Fine with these, but I feel the more outlandish ones need a little more work to actually matter. In any case, it is important that these are answered and not dropped.
Off-case: totally fine and love to see it, so long as whoever runs any off has an understanding of how to run that argument.
NC: I tend to be less persuaded by strats that try to spread the aff thin and just go for whatever they drop/undercover, and while I won't stop you from doing that, I begin to err heavily in the aff's favor when they have four minutes to answer 4 off, respond to your case, and defend their own. In my opinion, it's better for debate for you to demonstrate your skills by thoroughly arguing a really good voter rather than throwing half-hearted args at your opponent to see what sticks.
Aff: The most frustrating part of judging LD is watching 1ARs that try to do line-by-lines on everything and drop part of the flow. I want to see a 1AR identify the reason the 1AC theoretically wins, extend that and respond to attacks against that premise, identify why the neg would theoretically win, and respond to that. The aff does not have to win every single argument in round to prove the resolution true, so show your skill by covering what you absolutely must in this small period of time. Too often I see 2ARs make good arguments that are too little too late, so do whatever it takes to give a 1AR that doesn't drop anything important (only drops stuff that isn't important) be it taking extra prep, going with opposing framework, etc.

About me: I debated for four years at Kinkaid coached by Eric Emerson. I qualled to the TOC sophomore through senior year and for you Texas people, I qualled to TFA state freshman through senior year. I was a 2A/1N for the first three years of high school and 1A/2N as a senior.
Top level
I have a pretty bad poker face, so if you look up every once in awhile, you’ll probably see what I think about your args. Yes, I want to be on the email chain: sabrinazbajwa@gmail.com.
Framing is key: Debates are won and lost in the framing of the last rebuttals. If you can isolate the nexus question in your last rebuttal and prove why you’re winning it, you’ll probably end up winning the debate. Line by line is great but that helps you win arguments in isolation not necessarily the debate. This doesn’t mean abandon the line by line and just wax poetically in your final rebuttals but tell me stuff like: Which impacts are most important? Which impacts control the escalation of other impacts? Most importantly: How do I weigh your claims vs your opponent's claims? “Even if” statements are the best way to clearly tell me how to weigh arguments. You’re rarely winning everything in a debate, so acknowledging what you’re losing and why it doesn’t matter makes it much easier to render a decision between competing claims.
Tech > truth (except for morally reprehensible arguments racism good, sexism good etc.), but be wary—just because a team “dropped” an argument on the line by line but answered it somewhere else (let’s say in the overview) and is controlling the meta framing for that issue, the arg isn’t actually dropped. In other words, embedded clash exists. Don’t ignore it. Also, I'm not going to vote for an arg that I can't explain to the other team (i.e saying "they dropped t, they aren't t vote neg is not an arg). For it to be an arg, you still need to extend a claim, warrant, and impact.
Be smart: Recognize interactions between different arguments and flows and bring it up in CX and in speeches. Exploit contradictions and double-turns. Flows don’t exist in isolation, and when someone reads 9 off, there’s almost always a double turn. Point these out.
Clarity > speed: If I can’t understand you, I’ll say clear probably twice but after that, I’ll just stop flowing. Make your speeches easy for me to flow--slow down on long blocks of analytics (especially for T/theory) and try to follow the line by line as best you can. It’s easier for both of us to recognize clash when you put the argument next to the argument it's responding to instead of giving a 7 minute overview and saying “that was the overview” 15 times.
Don’t steal prep, clip cards, or be mean.
Below are my predispositions to certain args. Obvi pre-dispositions can be disproven by making args to the contrary, but since everyone has inherent biases, you can read about my thoughts on your sick new 20-plank process counterplan here—
“K Affs” —
You need to be related to the topic in some way. It’ll be very easy for me to vote on framework if you’re not at least somewhat about the topic. Most of these affs tend to be large, sweeping FYIs and then claim to “disrupt the system”. For you to win these debates in front of me, you need to explain the method of your aff, and the impacts that you claim to “solve”. You should have some sort of an advocacy statement (doesn’t have to be a USFG plan) or a role of the ballot for me to evaluate your impacts. If you’re going to read high-theory affs, explain relevant terminology and buzzwords. Don’t assume I know what libidinal jouissance epistemology is. I don’t think conditional ethics is a viable 2AR strategy because I fundamentally believe that neg should be able to test the aff from multiple perspectives but you do you.
Framework/T/whatever you want to call it is a legitimate strategy against non-topical affs and can be a means of engaging the aff. I’m fine for whatever impacts you want to go for; however, in high school, I tended to like the procedural fairness/dialogue/”debate is a game” type arguments as opposed to decision-making/skills type impacts. I generally think “skills” based arguments work better against identity affs while fairness works better against high-theory affs. Topical versions of the aff are as close as it gets to silver bullets, and if you have a solvency advocate for it, I’ll be super impressed. For the neg, you also need to remember to explain both the link and internal link to your impact. Too often, teams just yell about fairness for a while without actually explaining what the aff has done that has “rigged the game”. For the aff, you need to explain why the TVA is either illogical or can’t solve; just saying roleplaying as the USFG is bad is not going to cut it. I also think the best way to win framework in front of me if you’re aff, is on your impact turns. A random technical “we-meet” is probably not going to be persuasive to me.
Other relevant K aff things: I lean towards not letting planless affs perm counter-advocacies (can easily be convinced otherwise). Neg teams need to be careful to clearly point out the differences between the aff and the alt.
Case Debate —
People don’t make use of case debate as much as they should—make smart analytics to take down the aff. 2As need to answer case instead of just extending your advantage and you need to say more than just “hegsolvesgreatpowerwar - that’sbrookikenberrywohlfoth”. I also feel people under-utilize impact turns (true in both K aff rounds and straight-up policy rounds). If you hear an aff that seems to say cap is bad, why not read cap good in the 1NC and then 8 min of cap good in the 2NC? Does the 1AC kinda sorta reject the American empire? Seems like not going for heg good for a large part of the block is just a missed opportunity.
Topicality —
I love good T debates. Don’t get bogged down in the nitty-gritty. You should explain your vision of the topic and why it’s better than your opponents’. You also need to explain terminal impacts. Why do I care if the topic is more limited? Why does intent to define matter? What matters more: limits or predictability? You need to have a case-list, otherwise I’ll lean towards overlimiting args. I default to competing interpretations but reasonability makes hella more sense if explained in terms of aff predictability.
Counterplans —
Though my neg record senior year might suggest otherwise, I love a good counterplan debate. If a counterplan text is like 20 planks long, for the love of god slow down at least a little in the 1NC. Necessary vs sufficient framing is incredibly persuasive and the 1AR needs to answer this. The best counterplans are specific PICs. As a 2A, I hated counterplans that would require a 4 minute AT: perm do the counterplan block but as a 2N, I loved cheating counterplans. I went for all kinds of counterplans my senior year from the human rights conditions counterplan (China topic) to Track 2 CP, so really it’s up to you. If you want me to judge-kick the counterplan, you need to tell me and justify it in the 2NR.
Theory --
I don’t really lean either way and these debates tend to be blippy and frustrating to evaluate. Make them not blippy and not frustrating to evaluate if you’re going for theory (totally viable against Word PICs for example and process counterplans)
I’m probably not the best judge for conditionality bad args because I think conditionality is amazing and also what’s really the difference between 2 conditional worlds and 2? I just really don’t care about how abusive it is but as always tech > truth.
Kritiks —
I went for Ks all the time my senior year against many different types of affs. I’m the most familiar with security and psychoanalysis kritiks. I’m not the best judge for pomo because I’m pretty easy to convince that material violence comes first, however it all depends on how you go for those args. Baudrillard is probably right about most of his theories but who cares? You need to explain the jargon and have specific link applications to the aff you’re debating. Saying the state is bad and calling it a day is not going to cut it and makes it really easy for me to vote on the perm + “try/die aff”. You need to contextualize all of your link explanations to the aff; using smart empirical examples and referencing lines from their ev is a great way for you to appear ahead on the link debate. The biggest problem aff teams usually have is that they forget about their 1AC. Don’t forget about your 1AC! That’s usually 8 minutes of solid offense you can use against the kritik.
Cross-x: This is functionally a speech and you should prepare/think of it as such. Preparing smart questions will enable you to use CX as a time to generate args. You should have a coherent CX strategy (e.g don’t just spend 3 minutes jumping from flow to flow with no real goal). Be smart about how you use CX time, and while I don’t ever think it’s a good strategy to use CX as prep, I do understand if it’s a new aff (even then, however, I still strongly recommend using CX as CX).
Point scale —
Below a 27 means you did something extremely offensive (racist, sexist etc.) I reward you for smart arguments, clear execution, good CX, and clever strategies. Above a 29.5 is reserved for incredibly amazing speeches. Making any jokes about Sam Richey, Sita Yerramsetti, Linda Gong, Jason Yang, or Eric Emerson will also get you a .1 increase in speaks.

Exp: I debated for four years at Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio, Texas between 2008-2012. I went to camps at UTNIF and GDI. And I've been judging since 2012. Needless to say policy debate and I go way back.
Overview: While I ended my debate career on the left side of argumentation, experimenting with form and critical theory, I would still bust out a strategic cp/D/A where strategy required. At this juncture I enjoy a great policy-oriented debate as much as I enjoy a well argued critical position. If your coach or buddy says they knew how I debated and high school and that you should do 'X' in front of me, disregard them. Be you. Do what you do best. Read the arguments you like to read, just take strategy into consideration.
How I Judge: I default to an offense/defense paradigm, regardless of whether critical or traditional arguments are being read. Given the nuanced uniqueness of the activity - that the rules can be debated while debating - I think it is important for debaters to establish their interpretations of what is acceptable through T, Theory, and Framework where it is applicable. It is on you to tell me how I should see the round, how I should evaluate the arguments within it and how I should vote. It's also on you to tell me what type of calculus to use when I vote (impact weighing, f/w, theory, etc). Should I be a utilitarian or should I look at the round in another way? What is the role of my ballot? Should an argument deemed theoretically objectionable in round be rejected or should the team that read it be voted down? You tell me.
Etiquette: Whether you think policy debate is a fun place to role play and prep for college or you think it is a revolutionary ground for X movement, above all this activity is two things: a student activity and an educational activity. As students, you are expected to interact on the spectrum between not rude and cordial. I understand that arguments can get heated, particularly those that a debater might have a personal connection with. Don't be afraid to express what you need to express and say what you need to say, but be mindful that stark disrespect and gratuitous foul language don't float in my boat. Be competitive, be authentic. As long as you are mindful of the line between competition and flat out aggression in terms of how you carry yourself, all should be well in my book.
Tech Considerations: Paperless debates tend to give me 1,001 headaches as a judge. A lack of proficiency amongst students causes rounds to drag on and reflects a lack of preparation. Ballpark estimate, I think 75% of you are bad at doing this in an efficient and effective manner. Don't be a statistic! Prep time ends when the flash drive is out or when the speech doc is sent.

If you have little time before the debate, here’s all you need to know:do what you do best. I try to be as unbiased as possible and I will defer to your analysis. As long as you are clear, go as fast as you want.
Most judges give appalling decisions. Here's where I will try to be better than them:
- They intervene, even when they claim they won't. Perhaps "tech over truth" doesn't mean what it used to. I will attempt to adjudicate and reach a decision purely on only the words you say. If that's insufficient to reach a decision either way--and it often isn't--I will add the minimum work necessary to come to a decision. The more work I have to do, the wider the range of uncertainty for you and the lower your speaks go.
- They aren't listening carefully. They're mentally checked out, flowing off the speech doc, distracted by social media, or have half their headphones off and are taking selfies during the 1AR. I will attempt to flow every single detail of your speeches. I will probably take notes during CX if I think it could affect my decision. If you worked hard on debate, you deserve a judge who works hard as well.
- They givepoorly-reasoned decisions that rely on gut instincts and ignore arguments made in the 2NR/2AR. I will probably take my sweet time making and writing my decision. I will try to be as thorough and transparent as possible. If I intervene anywhere, I will explain why I had to intervene and how you could've prevented that intervention. If I didn't catch or evaluate an argument, I will explain why you under-explained or failed to extend it. I will try to anticipate your questions and preemptively answer them in my decision.
- They reconstruct the debateand try to find themost creative and convoluted path to a ballot. I guess they're trying to prove they're smart? These decisions are detestable because they take the debate away from the hands of the debaters. If there are multiple paths to victory for both teams, I will take what I think is the shortest path and explain why I think it's the shortest path, and you can influence my decision by explaining why you control the shortest path. But, I'm not going to use my decision to attempt to prove I'm more clever than the participants of the debate.
- If you think the 1AR is a constructive, you should strike me.
Meta Issues:
- I’m not a professional debate coach or even a teacher. I work as a finance analyst in the IT sector and I volunteer as a debate coach on evenings and weekends. I don’t teach at debate camp and my topic knowledge comes primarily from judging debates. My finance background means that,when left to my own devices, I err towards precision, logic, data, and concrete examples. However, I can be convinced otherwise in any particular debate, especially when it’s not challenged by the other team.
- Tech over truth in most instances. I will stick to my flow and minimize intervention as much as possible. I firmly believe that debates should be left to the debaters. I rarely make facial expressions because I don’t want my personal reactions to affect how a debate plays out. I will maintain a flow, even if you ask me not to. However, tech over truth has its limits. An argument must have sufficient explanation for it to matter to me, even if it’s dropped. You need a warrant and impact, not just a claim.
- Evidence comparisonis under-utilized and is very important to me in close debates. I often call for evidence, but I’m much more likely to call for a card if it’s extended by author or cite.
- I don’t judge or coach at the college level, which means I’m usually a year or two behind the latest argument trends that are first broken in college and eventually trickle down to high school.If you’re reading something that’s close to the cutting edge of debate arguments, you’ll need to explain it clearly. This doesn’t mean I don’t want to hear new arguments. On the contrary, a big reason why I continue coaching debate is because I enjoy listening to and learning about new arguments that challenge my existing ways of thinking.
- Please mark your own cards. No one is marking them for you.
- If I feel that you are deliberately evading answering a question or have straight up lied, and the question is important to the outcome of the debate, I will stop the timer and ask you to answer the question. Example: if you read condo bad, the neg asks in CX whether you read condo bad, and you say no, I’ll ask if you want me to cross-out condo on my flow.
Framework:
- Don't over-adapt to me in these debates. If you are most comfortable going for procedural fairness, do that. If you like going for advocacy skills, you do you. Like any other debate, framework debates hinge onimpact calculus and comparison.
- When I vote neg, it’s usually because the aff team missed the boat on topical version, has made insufficient inroads into the neg’s limits disad, and/or is winning some exclusion disad but is not doing comparative impact calculus against the neg’s offense. The neg win rate goes up if the 2NR can turn or access the aff's primary impact (e.g. clash and argument testing is vital to ethical subject formation).
- When I vote aff, it’s usually because the 2NR is disorganized and goes for too many different impacts, there’s no topical version or other way to access the aff’s offense, and/or concedes an exclusion disad that is then impacted out by the 2AR.
- On balance, I am worse for 2ARs that impact turn framework than 2ARs that have a counter-interp. If left to my own devices, I believe in models and in the ballot's ability to, over the course of time, bring models into existence. I have trouble voting aff if I can't understand what future debates look like under the aff's model.
Topicality:
- Over the years, “tech over truth” has led me to vote neg on some untruthful T violations. If you’re neg and you’ve done a lot of research and are ready to throw down on a very technical and carded T debate, I’m a good judge for you.
- If left to my own devices, predictability > debatability.
- Reasonability is a debate about the aff’s counter-interpretation, not their aff.The size of the link to the limits disad usually determines how sympathetic I amtowards this argument, i.e. if the link is small, then I’m more likely to conclude the aff’s C/I is reasonable even without other aff offense.
Kritiks:
- The kritik teams I've judged that have earned the highest speaker points givehighly organizedandstructuredspeeches, are disciplined in line-by-line debating, andemphasize key momentsin their speeches.
- Just like most judges,the more case-specific your link and the more comprehensive your alternative explanation, the more I’ll be persuaded by your kritik.
- I greatly prefer the 2NC structure where you have a short (or no) overview anddo as much of your explanation on the line-by-line as possible. If your overview is 6 minutes, you make blippy cross-applications on the line-by-line, and then you drop the last three 2AC cards, I’m going to give the 1AR a lot of leeway on extending those concessions, even if they were somewhat implicitly answered in your overview.
- Framework debates on kritiks often don't matter. For example, the neg extends a framework interp about reps, but only goes for links to plan implementation. Before your 2NR/2AR, ask yourself what winning framework gets you/them.
- I’m not a good judge for “role of the ballot” arguments, as I usually find these to be self-serving for the team making them.I’m also not a good judge for “competing methods means the aff doesn’t have a right to a perm”. I think the aff always has a right to a perm, but the question is whether the perm is legitimate and desirable, which is a substantive issue to be debated out, not a gatekeeping issue for me to enforce.
- I’m an OK judge for K “tricks”. A conceded root cause explanation, value to life impact, or “alt solves the aff” claim is effective if it’s sufficiently explained.The floating PIK needs to be clearly made in the 2NCfor me to evaluate it. If your K strategy hinges on hiding a floating PIK and suddenly busting it out in the 2NR, I’m not a good judge for you.
Counterplans:
- Just like most judges, I prefercase-specific over generic counterplans, but we can’t always get what we want.
- I lean neg on PICs. I lean aff on international fiat, 50 state fiat, condition, and consult. These preferences can change based on evidence or lack thereof. For example, if the neg has a state counterplan solvency advocate in the context of the aff, I’m less sympathetic to theory.
- I will not judge kickthe CP unless explicitly told to do so by the 2NR, and it would not take much for the 2AR to persuade me to ignore the 2NR’s instructions on that issue.
- Presumption is in the direction of less change. If left to my own devices, I will probably conclude that most counterplans that are not explicitly PICs are a larger change than the aff.
Disadvantages:
- I’m a sucker for specific and comparative impact calculus. For example, most nuclear war impacts are probably not global nuclear war but some kind of regional scenario. I want to know why your specific regional scenario is faster and/or more probable. Reasonable impact calculus is much more persuasive to me than grandiose impact claims.
- Uniqueness only "controls the direction of the link" if uniqueness can be determined with certainty (e.g. whip count on a bill, a specific interest rate level). On most disads where uniqueness is a probabilistic forecast (e.g. future recession, relations, elections), the uniqueness and link are equally important, which means I won't compartmentalize and decide them separately.
- Zero risk is possiblebut difficult to prove by the aff. However, a miniscule neg risk of the disad is probably background noise.
Theory:
- I actually enjoy listening to a good theory debate, but these seem to be exceedingly rare. I think I can be persuaded that many theoretical objections require punishing the team and not simply rejecting the argument, but substantial work needs to be done on why setting a precedent on that particular issue is important. You're unlikely to win that a single intrinsic permutation is a round-winning voter, even if the other team drops it, unless you are investing significant time in explaining why it should be an independent voting issue.
- I think thatI lean affirmative compared to the rest of the judging community on the legitimacy of counterplans. In my mind, a counterplan that is wholly plan-inclusive (consultation, condition, delay, etc.) is theoretically questionable. The legitimacy of agent counterplans, whether domestic or international, is also contestable. I think the negative has the right to read multiple planks to a counterplan, but reading each plank conditionally is theoretically suspect.
Miscellaneous:
- I usually take a long time to decide, and give lengthy decisions. LASA debaters have benefitted from the generosity of judges, coaches, and lab leaders who used their decisions to teach and trade ideas, not just pick a winner and get a paycheck. Debaters from schools with limited/no coaching, the same schools needed to prevent the decline in policy debate numbers, greatly benefit from judging feedback. I encourage you to ask questions and engage in respectful dialogue with me. However, post-round hostility will be met with hostility. I've been providing free coaching and judging since before you were birthed into the world. If I think you're being rude or condescending to me or your opponents, I will enthusiastically knock you back down to Earth.
- I don't want a card doc. If you send one, I will ignore it. Card docs are an opportunity for debaters to insert cards they didn't read, didn't extend, or re-highlight. They're also an excuse for lazy judges to compensate for a poor flow by reconstructing the debate after the fact. If your debating was disorganized and you need a card doc to return some semblance of organization, I'd rather adjudicate the disorganized debate and then tell you it was disorganized.
Ways to Increase/Decrease Speaker Points:
- Look and sound like you want to be here.Judging can be spirit murder if you're disengaged and disinterested. By contrast, if you're engaged, I'll be more engaged and helpful with feedback.
- Argument resolution minimizes judgeintervention. Most debaters answer opposing positions by staking out the extreme opposite position, which is generally unpersuasive. Instead, take the middle ground. Assume the best out of your opponents' arguments and use "even if" framing.
- I am usually unmoved by aggression, loud volume, rudeness, and other similar posturing. It's both dissuasive and distracting. By contrast,being unusually nice will always be rewarded with higher pointsand never be seen as weakness. This will be especially appreciated if you make the debate as welcoming as possible against less experienced opponents.
- Do not steal prep. Make it obvious that you are not prepping if there's not a timer running.
- Do not be the person who asks for a roadmap one second after the other team stops prep. Chill. I will monitor prep usage, not you. You're not saving us from them starting a speech without giving a roadmap.
- Stop asking for a marked doc when they've only skipped or marked one or two cards.It's much faster to ask where they marked that card, and then mark it on your copy. If you marked/skipped many cards, you should proactively offer to send a new doc before CX.

I want to be on the email chain, but I am not going to “read-along” during constructives. I may reference particular cards during cross-ex if they are being discussed, and I will probably read cards that are important or being contested in the final rebuttals. But it’s the job of the debaters to explain, contextualize, and impact the warrants in any piece of evidence. I will always try to frame my decision based on the explanations on the flow (or lack thereof).
Like every judge I look for smart, well-reasoned arguments. I’ll admit a certain proclivity for critical argumentation, but it isn’t an exclusive preference (I think there’s something valuable to be said about “policy as performance”). Most of what I have to say can be applied to whatever approach debaters choose to take in the round. Do what you’re good at, and I will do my best to render a careful, well thought-out decision.
I view every speech in the debate as a rhetorical artifact. Teams can generate clash over questions of an argument’s substance, its theoretical legitimacy, or its intrinsic philosophical or ideological commitments.
I think spin control is extremely important in debate rounds and compelling explanations will certainly be rewarded. And while quantity and quality are also not exclusive I would definitely prefer less cards and more story in any given debate as the round progresses. I also like seeing the major issues in the debate compartmentalized and key arguments flagged.
As for the standard array of arguments, there's nothing I can really say that you shouldn't already know. I like strong internal link stories and nuanced impact comparisons. I really don't care for "risk of link means you vote Aff/Neg" arguments on sketchy positions; if I don't get it I'm not voting for it. My standard for competition is that it’s the Negative’s job to prove why rejecting the Aff is necessary which means more than just presenting an alternative or methodology that solves better – I think this is the best way to preserve clash in these kinds of debates. Please be sure to explain your position and its relation to the other arguments in the round.
KRITIK LINKS ARE STILL IMPORTANT. Don’t assume you’ll always have one, and don’t over-rely on extending a “theory of power” at the top of the flow. Both of these are and should be mutually reinforcing. This is especially important for the way I evaluate permutations. Theories of power should also be explained deliberately and with an intent to persuade.
I think the topic is important and I appreciate teams that find new and creative approaches to the resolution, but that doesn’t mean you have to read a plan text or defend the USFG. Framework is debatable (my judging record on this question is probably 50/50). A lot of this depends on the skills of the debaters in the room. This should not come as a surprise, but the people who are better at debating tend to win my framework ballot. Take your arguments to the next level, and you'll be in a much stronger position.
Two other things that are worth noting: 1) I flow on paper…probably doesn’t mean anything, but it might mean something to you. 2) There's a fine line between intensity and rudeness, so please be mindful of this.

Feel free to just call me Kay; pronouns are she/her. I did policy for four years at North Lamar High School and graduated in 2017. I am currently a full-time social worker, so I don’t judge as much as I used to, which means that my topic-specific knowledge isn’t super high this year.

Philosophy (all events):
Debate should be about the arguments you find "best" for you. I am comfortable and equally happy in well-warranted policy debates as I am in well-warranted kritikal or performance debates. When not given another framing mechanism, I tend to default to an offense/defense paradigm. My general answer to what "should" be allowed in a round is that theory read/answered by the debaters will parse that out.
[added on 2/23/2023] - For the sake of transparency, I want to add a few caveats to the above. The more I listen to it, the more I've discovered that I have a pretty high threshold for voting on disclosure theory. Just something to be aware of if you choose to read it in front of me.
Speaker Points (all events):
I assign speaker points on strategic decision-making and organization (including signposting and coherent line-by-line). I will dock speaker points for excessive rudeness, demeaning others in the debate, and intentionally making offensive/discriminatory arguments or comments in the debate.
Easy Routes to my Ballot (policy but also everything else really):
1. You should construct the narrative you want on my ballot. This means that I don't want to have to fill in internal links, test truth claims, or filter your offense through the framing that wins the debate.
2. Consistency across speeches is important. That means I'm not voting on 2NR/2AR arguments from the 1AC/1NC that aren't in the block or 1AR. I also have a pretty high threshold for buying arguments that are shadow extended through the block/1AR.
3. I prefer evidence analysis/extension over card dumps. I very seldom find dumping cards onto the flow in the 2NC/2AC compelling if I'm not getting some articulation of how the evidence functions in the round.
LD Paradigm:
I'm fine with everything from more traditional value/criterion debate to more policy-style debates, performance debates, etc. Have the debate you want and are most comfortable having. That being said, some of the less common LD arguments (skep, NIBs, etc.) are pretty out of my wheelhouse and will require some serious explanation for me to understand them enough to feel comfortable voting on them.
One other thing I like to add for LD'ers: winning framework (morality good, util good, etc.) isn't enough to win the debate if you aren't winning a piece of offense through your framing. I won't do the work of weighing your offense for you, either, so please show me how your offense connects to your framing.
PF Note (updated September 2020): I don't judge very much PF, but you all ask this question, so I'll go ahead and make it easy on you: defense isn't sticky. If you want me to vote on it, I need to be able to track the argument from speech to speech.

I want to see you become the character(s) you are portraying and have the most believability in the role. Often times in the speech world, I see so many students caught up in the “statement” of the piece, they are no longer focusing on the acting.
I want to see completely fleshed out characters and actors who have thought about each moment! Breathing, operative words, and event work is crucial.
Blocking should be creative but not steal focus. It should be used to enhance your piece and not done for the sake of doing so.
passion and creativity in OO, INFO, and Extemp is ranked highest! When everyone has the same great analysis, it’s the small things like the intellectual way you created your AGD or vehicle that make you stand out!
4 years policy debate experience at Ronald Reagan High School. In college but not debating.
Plans ( or the lack thereof) - Plans are cool. Not having a plan is also cool. I'd like to think that I'll vote on whatever kind of aff you run, plan or not, as long as it has some impacts and a way to solve them. I ran affs with plans (of sorts), but I enjoyed a lot of non-plan affs that I ran into. Just make sure that if its a no-plan aff you make sure I understand the theory behind it, as well as what it is you do do. An explanation of the role of the ballot would be helpful.
I'm also throwing performance under the no-plan umbrella. It's fine too.
Kritiks - I like kritiks. I ran them. I think it's really annoying when they're really generic, but really fun if they're really specific. I'm also not a fan of jargon, since it's pretty useless unless you have background knowledge about the specific K. Even if I do understand it, I find that often it's a poor substitute for more specific explanation. I might know the phrases you're using, but if I don't know what it has to do with the aff it's pretty useless.
Counterplans and Disadvantages - I have no particular feelings or thoughts about these. They are useful arguments.
Theory - I'll vote on it. Not necessarily as a reason to reject the team though, so prove that. Go slow or I can't flow it and you won't win on it.
Topicality - I went for topicality a lot, but I'm not sure if that means I'll vote on it more because I think it's a fun argument or less because I have higher standards for it. Make sure you develop it fully throughout the debate - I'll be hard-pressed to vote for a topicality violation that the block spent 30 seconds on. I default to competing interpretations, but I can be persuaded otherwise. Go slow.
For speaks, I guess just be clear and persuasive. Go a bit slower on tags and cites and/or do something fairly obvious when going to the next card. It gets really difficult to flow and keep things in order when everything is the same speed and there's no sign of when a card begins and ends.
Be respectful to everyone in the room. Flashing is prep. I'll say clear a couple times if you're unclear. I'll probably stop trying to flow after that. I'm really bad at timing so I prefer not to do it. I'll default to the debaters being in charge of timing. Or you could take the risk having me time and see which team ends up with a couple extra minutes of prep (I love a good gamble).

I think debate has lots of epistemological value, though I have voted that it is bad and should be destroyed more than once. I competed at the TOC and NDT, but eventually stopped debating to work in sustainable farming. Today, my day job is as the head farmer for the San Antonio Food Bank, operate a hydroponic farm and coworking kitchen space called LocalSprout (www.localsprout.com), and push local policy change to advance a sustainable and equitable food system through the Food Policy Council of San Antonio (www.fpcsa.org). I made these choices as a direct result of a decision-making style that I got from debate.
Evidence quality is important to me. +.1 speaker points if you mention a methods section in your or their articles.
For critical affs, teams that admit to being outside of the resolution need to describe what content and arguments debates would feature if their interpretation were adopted wholesale. It's best if that sounds like a version of debate where both sides stand a chance and is pedagogically valuable. There need to be strong answers to a topical version and reasons why awarding the ballot in a certain direction is good.
I miss the diversity of structural Ks debate used to feature. For those critiques, I like to know what the alternative looks like or why the details aren't important.
For counterplan theory, in each round there is an amount of conditional negative advocacies that is beyond the reasonable amount of testing the aff, which then degrades the quality of the discussion. Use your judgement on what that limit is. I don't like permanent/recurring inaction or attitudinal fiat. Solvency advocates are the best response to accused CP illegitimacy. If it was impossible to find a solvency advocate for a widely discussed aff, that's usually a bad sign. Multi-actor, international, and delay counterplans rarely seem to challenge the aff or the topic. They often put judges in a strange place between choosing between things no human has the authority over.
For politics DAs, I have a higher threshhold for the link debate than the community at large. I find fiat solves the link arguments persuasive if the aff requires that congresspeople change their mind. If it's normal means that the president expends capital to persuade them, I need reasons why that's normal means or why we should interpret the world that way. Delay, direct horsetrading, or focus links are different from usual political capital arguments and are often times more intrinsic to the aff.
Defense matters - No internal link, uniqueness overwhelms the link, empirically denied, impact inevitable - these arguments are some of the most persuasive to me and I am more likely to think you are smart if you say them.
I am likely to dismiss 2AR arguments entirely if I think they are new.
I usually make decisions based on comparative impact assessment. Relative to other judges, it seems like I pay more attention to impact uniqueness, which are often influenced by arguments like those that have been kicked earlier in the debate and turns case arguments. This is as true for critical debates as it is for policy ones.

I have done literally no research into the education topic and don’t know what any acronyms mean so please make sure those things are made clear.
Frame/T
It’s a necessary evil, but I’d rather engage the substance of the k. That doesn’t mean I won’t vote on it, just that I won’t enjoy it.
Most T violations are usually bs where the competitor deliberately uses specific words in the resolution to screw around. I would rather vote for literally anything else other than T, but if there is TRULY a T violation I’ll definitely weigh it accordingly.
K’s
I love k debate, and I’ve debated/read a lot of k lit so I’m probably familiar with what you’re reading (though that doesn’t mean you can get away with just using buzzwords and not actually explaining the link/warrant/impact, I don't know everything). The link debate here is super important, as is the k’s contextualization in the world of the aff.
Theory
I like theory debates but I’m not super familiar, so if you’re going for theory make sure its well explained. I’ll only vote on theory if its engaged with properly, but if teams skirt around the argument I’ll just be annoyed.
Counterplans
Specificity and efficacy are key. I’m almost always more inclined to vote on a cp if its case specific. Furthermore, if I can’t verbalize what the counterplan actually does then I won’t vote for it.
Speaking
If you’re racist/ableist/sexist/otherwise an asshole, you’re losing. The minute you say something problematic, I’ll put in my headphones during any other speeches you may have. I spread a ton in my debates and I think its absolutely a good tool in the debate space. However, THERE IS NOTHING I HATE MORE THAN SHITTY SPREADING. I'll say clear twice and give up after that. Double breathing is unnecessary and you don’t need to do it, just take one actual breath. You can’t just say the tag and then mumble the card. I would much rather you go slow than fail to articulate. Because I tend to be so picky about speaking, if you can spread well (that is, with good articulation and inflection), you’ll get at least a 29. Most people can’t. Do some speaking drills.
I’ll give you .5 points if you can make a fitting Kanye West or Kendrick Lamar reference somewhere in your speech (you'll probably need it).
--Congress--
Competitors should speak at a conversational rate, prioritizing analysis and development over number of arguments delivered. Students should use a variety of nonbiased evidenciary sources in their speeches. Industry publications and think tanks will be weighted over news sources and periodicals. Speehes should include roughly half new material demonstrating original thought and half in response to a previous speech or sentiment. Presiding officers should demonstrate mastery of parliamentary procedure and should be fair and transparent in their conduct.
--Speech--
Extemp: Competitors should speak at a conversational rate, prioritizing analysis and development of thoughts. Students should use a variety of nonbiased evidenciary sources in their speeches. Industry publications and think tanks will be weighted over news sources and periodicals. Speech should not be stilted or overly formal. Smooth transitions and incorporation of source material are key to seemless flow of the speech. Bonus points for incorporation of appropriate humor. I prefer speakers to stand. Speakers who are obviously reading from their screen will be penalized.
Prepared Speaking: Competitors should maintain credibility and professionalism while being engaging and entertaining. I prefer thorough explanation and analysis of a smaller number of sources over superficial exploration of many. Delivery should be done in a standing position if possible.
Interp: Pieces should domonstrate historic and contemporary relevence. Teasers and introductions should set up the piece and should tell me how the piece is unique to the performer, our time and all relevent stakeholders. Bonus points for carefully considered blocking and movement in the virtual world. Thorough character development and originality in blocking are appreciated.
I’m an Ex-Churchill policy debater and an IR major at American University.
My main rule is to do what you know how to do and do it well. I’m generally cool with most arguments- (barring overt sexism/racism/ableism/etc).
I’m really not a fan of narrative debate as I feel like it turns into monologues on personal oppression rather than adding to clash and education. You can run a narrative, but I'll probably be pretty hard on it.
Yes, I will vote on T, but do not run T just to run T. That's lazy and I won't vote on it if I feel you threw in it without a real reason.
I do enjoy a well-executed K, but again it has to link well and follow through on the flow.
I’m cool with speed and prompting. Also if your opponents are okay with it you can open CX.
It's been a while since I was en-round, so please slow down on tags. As far as speaks go I average at 27 and go up and down as I see fit. If I can’t understand you I’ll call clear, and you’ll get a warning. I try not to be too stingy on clarity, and I’m more likely to deduct you for disorganization/offensive speech over just tripping over your words.

2x NDT Qualifier
I debated LD for Winston Churchill HS in San Antonio for 3 years with two state quals. I was a traditionalist in my approach to LD, although I experimented with policy argumentation. I have estranged myself from the world of debate since graduation so i am not 100% the debater I once was (which wasn't a whole lot tbh :P) so best bet is to assume you are better than I am and make your arguments simple to digest.
If you want good speaks, do/don't do this:
-Speak with clarity and articulation. (i can handle speed if you aren't mumbling, gasping, or just generally hard to understand)
- Be non-confrontational toward your opponent. (Basically don't be a sarcastic ass)
- Logical argument progression with good signposting, i don't want to have to flip back and forth flows or have to guess where you want me to flow your arguments.
- Don't extend arguments in diminutive, insignificant blips. Explain how or why your argument addresses your opponent's, because if I don't understand what the connection is, you might as well have just skipped the argument and saved the time.
- Don't make your strat an obvious attempt to gimp your opponent (EX: don't run multiple policy arguments agains every AFF just because you think they are edgy and hard to understand)
Things That I Will Straight Up Ask You To Stop Speaking And Then Drop You For:
-Sexism, racism, homophobia, and any general offensive comments or behavior
-Impact turning oppression arguments (I will never vote on oppression good. Sorry not sorry.)
-Doing anything explicit that makes your opponent, myself, or anyone else in the room feel unsafe
Theory/T:
- Not my favorite kind of round to arbitrate to be perfectly honest. Frivolous theory is among my greatest pet peeves. This is not to say that you can not run theory in front of me, especially if you and I notice obvious abuse from the opposing debater, but keep it relevant to the round and try not to just drop all substantive topic focused debate on a dime because theory was introduced.
Final note: If you consider yourself a skilled debater, or your strategy for debating is one that appeals to more complex rounds, air on the side of caution, and if it helps, treat me like a lay judge. Lets all remember that this is an activity that we engage in (hopefully) for enjoyment and enrichment, so don't debate like you have a chip on your shoulder. Relax and have FUN!

The easiest thing I can tell you about my paradigm is that I am tab. I'll vote on anything, and I essentially ran anything while I was in high school, so you're not going to lose me in running any of your favorite arguments.
Further in-depth stuff (this is primarily for policy, but can be cross-applied to LD (or PF I guess)):
When I say I'm tab that means that I will vote in any framework you give me, don't mistake that for if you win the framework you win the round (this is especially true in traditional LD). I have voted for teams that lose the framework debate, but still had better offense under the opposing framing. Therefore, you need to both win your framework and meet that framework better than the opponent to win the round. However, if you don't run a framework I default to an offense-defense paradigm where I vote on whichever team has managed to generate the most offense.
If you're baffled by a decision it is because you did not warrant. I am a stickler for warranting, especially in extensions, and if you don't extend a warrant, even over a dropped argument, then I'm not doing that work.
Kritiks
Like I said, I'm tab, so naturally I'm fine with/a fan of Ks. I am NOT a fan of 2NC/2NR overviews of kritikal buzzwords that do nothing to advance debate in the round. I'm not 100% read on all K literature, so if you're going to use technical terminology - define them, tell me how they relate to your alt, to the link debate, and to the aff. Line-by-line is generally much easier for me to flow and understand a K debate.
That being said, I would avoid reading one-off K in front of me. I won't vote down one-off K on face, but I find that it's not terribly strategic, and doubly so if you're the type to concede all of case by going for the one K. All of the eggs in one basket just isn't good strategy, and it's super boring to listen to.
People will talk about how you need a specific link - I'm not that type. If the aff has a good reason that you need a specific link then you should be able to provide one, but a good generic link to the topic, state, or debate will suffice without aff contest.
Presentation
Stylistically I don't really care what you do. I can handle your spreading if you can handle your spreading. If you're unclear then don't spread. Furthermore, signposting is an absolute must between flows and cards. That can be as a simple as saying "next off" or "onto the K," and between cards inserting an "and." If I miss a card or argument that you didn't signpost clearly where I should've flowed it will not be evaluated, and that's on you.
Offensiveness in round is always bad, and I'll penalize any aggression appropriately depending on severity of the aggression. There are instances where you might just be ignorant which will only result in a minor speak penalty and a stern reprimanding in RFD. Above all, be polite to your opponents. You can be competitive, but don't be rude, especially in CX.
Redundancy isn't great. That means reading a bunch of repetitive cards, putting an explanation under a card that explains the card you just read, or just saying the same thing over and over. I get tired of this quickly and it does harm speaks. Card dumps seriously aren't persuasive or strategic about half the time. If you're card dumping like five new impacts onto a undercovered disad in the 2NC that's chill, but just reading like 5 uniqueness cards that all say the same thing isn't.
I evaluate speaks through strategy, not presentation. A 30 happens through really good decisions, time allocation, unique argumentation, etc. I can't tell you what exactly gets a 30, nor will I attempt to define it further decisively here, but I know it when I see it.
Theory
I don't err anything on any argument before a debate, so all theoretical objections are up for dispute. That being said, I've seen a lot of debates where people read two shells at each other (such as states bad v. good) and don't have any actual clash. If that is the ONLY sort of argumentation being put down on a theory flow before the 2NR/2AR, do not try to convince me to vote for theory because it'll end up being a wash, and I'll vote on presumption.
Speaking of presumption; I tend to vote it on it a lot because many people end up not winning anything. So in the case that there doesn’t seem to be any offense for any team I default to presumption. Most of the time for me that means neg, but if there’s an alternative advocacy on the flow then it goes aff. If you have a different model of presumption in mind - make it an argument, but otherwise that's how I vote.
Note about disclosure: I have an impressively high threshold for voting on disclosure, and there are a number of ways that debaters articulate disclosure that I find objectionable. Please do not make arguments for disclosure based on the capabilities of small/rural schools (especially if you are from a (sub)urban/large school). Moreover, please do not read interpretations that mandate your opponent post any sort of contact information on the wiki - I will not vote on this interp no matter how hard you're winning the flow.
T
I wouldn't say that I have a high threshold for T, I will vote on T if you win it, but you need to win each part of the T: interp, violation, standards, and voters. (Theoretically you could get me to vote on a T with just an interp, violation, and standards if you win that a stock FW is good)
The "all three branches T" is really popular right now. I'll vote on it, but it's the worst T argument. Nothing uses all three branches because that's not how government works.
Disads/CPs
I don't think you absolutely have to have either of these in the 1NC to win; if you like em, go for em, and if you don't, don't. I'm not a person who's super convinced that things have to be super specific or anything like that - generic links are fine, just try to contextualize to the aff or give a good scenario analysis.
Misc.
Please, god, do not sit at the door weirdly if I'm in the room waiting for my queue to give you agency. Just walk in. I'm the judge; you are ALLOWED to come in if I'm in here.
I don't care where you sit. I don't want to shake your hand before or after the round (especially true as of March 2020).
“My partner will answer that in the next speech” is NOT a cx answer, and if you use it it’s minus 1 speak.
Same thing goes for asking questions that are prefaced with "in your own words."
I am timing, my time is the time. You should still time yourself. I do not give signals during speeches, CX, or prep.
This is specifically for UIL tournaments: there's no such thing as "UIL style" and most "UIL rules" aren't actually rules. Any appeal to the UIL that aren't in any UIL handbook will not be flowed and is again, -1 speak.
PF Debate:
- I don't judge this event nearly at all, but please just select sides in such a way that pro always speaks first. I get confused when it's reversed.
- Also, there's nothing I hate more than the PF convention of sharing evidence. Please just flash entire cases.
Congratulations on qualifying for Nats! It is through hard work and dedication that you have made it.
My criteria for judging is as follows. I use a framework. whether this is the traditional value criterion or just a statement of what is more important, I need some lens to view the round. I am more familiar with the traditional side, but do not feel that a debater has to necessarily uphold that tradition as long as I have a way presented to look at the round. Basically, you both define the realm of the debate. I will put myself in that space and determine within this guideline who wins.
What happens then? I don't have a leaning toward structural violence, util impacting or rights based approaches to the topic. While my debate time was spent in policy, I won't default to that unless there is nothing else for me to do. I enjoy rights v util rounds. This topic may have a few of those. If you are running something you consider not mainstream, I am ok as long as you prove the tie in to the topic. An example would be a specific country vs a US based democracy approach. I do not like voting on topicality but again, if neg is winning it I will vote there. I am not a fan of lots of debate theory, as a preference, let's debate the topic. That said, if you are a theory debater, debate well. I am not a fan of defining what you do and don't do, I just don't really from a selfish perspective want to see a round of tricks and rvi's.
I am antiquated so I write on paper. I can write down what you are saying if you stay organized. Please stay organized. Explain why your position is better than your opponents and things will work out.

TL;DR. I’m cool with whatever you have to say in whatever format you would like to say it. I think that your arguments should interact with the topic in some way, though that doesn't necessitate having a plan text or defending the federal government. Assume you need to over-explain arguments and link stories, I like to refrain from doing work for the debater(s) - that has gone poorly for some folks I've judged in the past that assumed too much. I’ve lost some flowing proficiency since high school, but I will try my best to keep up.

I haven't debated for several years, so I’m not going to trick myself into thinking that I remember everything about every debate argument or that I'm still able to effectively flow at super high speeds. However, I vow that I will do everything in my power to be present and alert of what is happening in the round and be respectful of your time. I will also do my best to explain my thought process for every decision so that you understand why I voted a certain way if the tournament allows. If not, I will make myself available to you to provide my insight or comments if you wish.
I debated for 4 years at Ronald Reagan HS in San Antonio, TX (2012-2016) and I am a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (hook'em). In my first three years, I did exclusively LD and Extemporaneous Speaking. I attended many national tournaments for LD, so I am very familiar with the argument types and strategies on the national circuit. I also attended UIL State for Informative Speaking. Policy debate, however, was the highlight of my senior year. As a 2A/1N, my partner and I attended elimination rounds at various national tournaments, was the top seed at TFA State where I was 5th overall speaker, was in late elims of NSDA Nationals, and attended the Tournament of Champions.
My advice to you: Do what you do best. That doesn’t mean that adaptation isn’t important. I’ve had to do my fair share and I know of its challenges and rewards. The big takeaway is that I am open to anything you have to say in any manner or format to which you would like to say it.
Some house-keeping items:
- Be Kind. Please.
- Prep stops when the email is sent/when the document is saved to the flash drive and is out of the computer.
- Speed is fine. Go slower on Theory/T Interpretations and CP Texts, as you should. I try to flow everything said in the round including the text of evidence and cross ex. Hopefully this isn’t anything new, but clarity is very important.
- I like reading evidence, and I'll call for it if it's pertinent to my thought process at the end of the round.

Affs -- Read whatever you're comfortable with.
- I believe that affs should be a critical discussion of the topic. What that "critical discussion" entails is entirely up to the debaters. Heg/Econ scenarios, poetic performances, whatever you do best, do it. Though, I'm likely not going to be persuaded by an aff that I feel could be cross-applied to any other topic (I think you lose out too).
- In order of how much I've read them in HS (from the most to the least), it would go "middle-of-the-road" affs, K affs, then Policy affs. I do not have a proclivity towards any one of them: I've enjoyed reading them all.
- In LD, I do not have a preference as to what the aff should look like. You can do the traditional "definitions, framework, contentions," thing or you can switch it up and do it in reverse, I don't care. As long as the information is read.
Topicality -- I enjoy Topicality debates and have no qualms voting on a well-executed topicality shell.
- I default to competing interpretations if all things are equal - actually, I probably default to an offense/defense paradigm on most things.
- In HS, I rarely read any other standard than predictable limits; I intuitively think that both sides have reasonable ground for argumentation if they're smart enough, but I can be persuaded to vote for other standards. That being said, I generally think along the lines of "the caselist" in topicality debates, so doing your due diligence in these debates should be rewarded.
- I don’t think that RVI’s are a thing and I'm not sure why they ever were; I've yet to vote for an RVI argument I thought was persuasive. BUT, *shrugs* if it's conceded, then there's not much I can do about that, now can I?
Framework/T-USFG -- Go for it.
- As a 2A I've both defended and not defended a plan text, so I have experience with both sides of the framework debate. I've also read it quite a few times on the negative, so I'm familiar with how it ought to be executed.
- I don't think that FW is inherently violent, but that doesn't mean there aren't sweet impact turns to roleplaying/policy education.
- Carded topical versions of the aff are very persuasive for me.
LD Frameworks -- Do your thing.
- I don't have an expectation as to what the Framework should look like for the aff or neg. You can do the Value/Value-Criterion if you want. You can do a Standard if you want. You can read a Role of the Ballot/Judge interpretation if you want.
Theory -- With me, you should explain the violation more than normal if it's anything other than disclosure or condo.
- In all honesty, based on my skill level I'm probably not a good judge for you if your strategy is to spam 4 tricky theoretical violations and go for the undercovered ones.
- Except for conditionality and disclosure, I am not really experienced with the various types of theoretical violations floating out there, especially on the LD national circuit. In my HS experience, I'd never read anything on the affirmative that justified opponents making theory a 2NR position, so I rarely had to give a substantive 2AR on anything other than condo.
- If theory ends up being a "game-winning" 2NR/2AR strategy, I would implore you to please go slow and over-explain the argument. It’s not that I am incapable of understanding theory (I think I'm actually selling myself a little short), it's just an area of the argument spectrum that I don't have much personal experience with.
- I am more receptive to theory as a result of actual cheating, whatever that means for the debate.
- I don't think theory needs to be in a traditional "shell" format - as long as all the components are there, we should be good.
Counterplans -- Explain to me what they actually do.
- The only caveat I have with CPs is the quality of solvency advocate evidence; I'm just a sucker for evidence that actually says what you're claiming it says.
- An explanation as to what the counterplan actually does would really help me conceptualize how it interacts with and is different from the plan, especially if it deviates from being textually and functionally competitive.
- I don't have an expectation as to what the net benefit should be. Internal Net Benefits, DA's, on-case DA's. All fair game.
Disadvantages -- I'm game for anything you've got.
- I'm a stickler for strong, definitive pieces of evidence, especially on the uniqueness debate. Though, I'll probably give you the benefit of the doubt if you do a fair amount of explanation as to why that piece of evidence may be true.
- I've read politics, linear, and on-case DA's with extinction-level or structural violence impacts so I shouldn't be unfamiliar with whatever you decide to read.
- I've done my fair share of impact turning DA's on the affirmative (I am particularly familiar with dedev or "warming irreversible" arguments) and I think these can be particularly strategic.
Case debate -- Underrated, and that is a darn shame.
- I've had some 1NRs where I just extended the warrants of 1NC evidence, read 5 minutes of cards, or a mix of the two. I’ve got no qualms voting negative on presumption if the aff’s responses are lackluster.
- Some of my best and most fun 1NRs to give were impact turns to the aff (dedev and "warming irreversible" again).
"Critical" arguments/K Affs/The K -- Read whatever you want, but be smart.
- Out of anything on this page, the K is probably what I have the most experience reading in HS. K affs and one-off K strategies were the bread and butter of my senior year.
- Some authors/criticisms that I enjoyed reading and deploying in-round include: Anti-Blackness, Berlant, Oliver, Settler Colonialism (plus every Eve Tuck article, ever), Critical Asian Studies/Orientalism/Model Minority Myth, (Racialized) Capitalism, and the Academy K.
- I prefer the line-by-line to long-winded overviews (oftentimes, they are hard to reconcile).
- Big overarching theme: you do you. This also encapsulates different arguments characterized as “performance,” though I tend to think that how you choose to debate is a performance of sorts. If you need to play music, dance, scream, do your thing.
In conclusion, some parting words.
Since my paradigm page is part love-letter-to-debate, part diary, I would like to share a thought about my philosophy on judging that may be helpful for you to know. Reflecting on my experiences as both a debater and a judge, I am a firm believer that debate, while an educational activity, is also primarily a persuasive activity. I have become increasingly annoyed with debaters and judges that are disappointed with someone's skill level (particularly if they are a novice debater or judge) and verbally express those frustrations to the public or behind their backs. Yes, having an experienced judge gives you more options to deploy different arguments and strategies, and that can certainly make for a more entertaining and enjoyable debate. But the world is not full of debate hardos. The next time you have a "lay" judge in the back of your debate, consider this: if you lose, perhaps it has less to do with the judge missing something and more about your inability to persuade someone outside of the activity (i.e. 99.9999% of people). This academically elitist pedestal some debaters find themselves upon is incredibly insufferable. So don't vent to me about how your last round's judge was a random mom or pop, you will find the opposite of sympathy from me.

Very close to a tab judge. Very flow based. Willing to listen to any avenue of argumentation and the answers to those points.
Overall: I am a policy maker who is mainly concerned with how impacts weigh at the end of the round. If no other framework is given, I will default to utilitarianism. I will utilize other frameworks, if you win the argument and if you do a good job explaining what that means for me as the judge. Either way, make sure that you are spending an adequate amount of time fleshing out and comparatively weighing impacts from ALL of your arguments, and getting to that earlier rather than later in the round.
Speed and Style:
I have been out for a while so I am a little rusty listening to high speed debate, so I would prefer you to err more on the moderate side of speed. I will say “clear” if you are going too fast for me or not enunciating enough, though. Definitely slow down for taglines, authors, and any analytics.
***Label where we are on the flow when you are giving responses and when moving on to the next argument. I have a low tolerance for a disorganized speech or flow and it will be reflected in your speaks**
I have very little tolerance for rudeness towards either myself or your competitors.
I am not interested in hearing morally reprehensible arguments (sexism, homophobia, racism, etc.)
Prep:
If you end prep, you had better be ready to give your speech. Flash or email your document before or right as you end prep time.
T:
Good, well utilized T arguments are what I dream of at night. Slow down on your interp, your standards and any analytics you have or they will not be flown properly. I default competing interpretations. Treat your voters on T like you would impacts off of anything else and actually utilize them in your impact calculus.
Case: Make sure you are extending your case. You don't have to do a lot of work on the parts that have not been attacked, but if the neg has words on the flow, make sure those are addressed adequately, or else you really don't have any room for a generic extension.
DA: They aren't 100% necessary but I would prefer to see at least one. I prefer specific links, but if you can build a story in the impact calc using a generic DA, you do you.
CP: Again I prefer case specific, but I can't always get what I want. Slow down during plan text expecially if there are multiple planks. Make sure you win your net benefit, or your CP is dead in the water as far as I'm concerned. I will listen to theory, but I am not super well read on CP theory anymore so make sure you are adequately explaining everything.
K: I will listen to these. While I am familiar with some Ks and authors, it is probably better that you assume that I am not, since most of my debating and judging experience is from UIL tournaments that are light on anything other than super normie Ks like fem and cap.

I was a 2n/1a throughout high school up until the present. I went for the K mostly but had to read other arguments on the local circuit. I am familiar with everything. I am open to all arguments and am willing to evaluate them. Do what you are best at.
Argument thoughts:
Kritiks
I prefer specificity in these debates. You should be able to contextualize link arguments to the aff. Critical literature is familiar to me, but that doesn't mean I know everything. Explain your argument and win your framework/impact framing in whatever way that may be that you are best at.
I'm good with whatever just do the thing.
K affs
The topic is not necessary for an affirmative. If you're not reading a plan that's cool. However, your aff should probably do something. Whatever that may be. Topic based or not.
Topicality
I like T debates. Specific caselists are helpful. Competing interpretations is the way I tend to default, but I can be persuaded otherwise given good arguments for reasonability.
Disads/Counterplans
Cool. Win the net benefit. Permutation exists fix that. Win your framework. Counterplans that are both textually and functionally competitive are preferable, but not a must.
Disads are fine. Just do what you need to do.
Theory
These debates are generally impossible to flow and result in a whole lot of awkward judge intervention. Don't do that. I should be able to flow the things you are saying. That's on you. Go slow enough that I can catch the arguments you're making.

THOSE DEBATING PAPERLESS:
Prep time is up when the speaker's jump drive is out of their computer. If you jump the other team a few more cards than you are going to read, that makes sense, BUT please do not jump the other team an entire file or seventy cards in random order. Learn to send evidence to a speech document.
Although I was much more immersed in critical debate during my time in debate that does not mean that I will give preferential treatment to one form of debate over another. Especially considering I think that I also think that DAs, CPs, and T/FW are debate that can be just as enjoyable to watch debated out. I would prefer you to do what you are good at than try to bend to what you think I’d like to hear and I will try to make as solid and clear of a decision as can possibly be given.
I really don’t like the misconception around debate that reading the most cards and being the fastest means you’ll win all the debates. If you’re fast, be clear and make sure you’re answering all the arguments. If your slower then make sure your arguments are well thought out and give you what you need to be answering arguments and give you the coverage you need. Moral of the story: speaker points/wins aren’t a speed game for me.
I think there’s much to be said for impact calculus and well-explained/strong link stories. Just saying “they link! Vote __” or “we solve extinction/nuke-war/structural violence!” is not sufficient for me to vote for you; you’re dropping the mic way too soon for me to care at all about your arguments. If I don’t get why I’m voting for an argument, I’m probably not going to vote for it. As the round progresses, flush out the key issues the debate will come down to, flag them, and explain, explain, explain.
I think there are many different ways teams can approach the topic. If your way is a literal interpretation: go for it, defend your implementation and methodology; if your way does not involve plan texts/USFG/etc.: go for it, defend your implementation and methodology. I’ve read affs that have plans and affs that don’t, neither or (anything in between) would surprise me and all will be judged fairly and respectfully.
Flowing: I flow lots of things in-round so don’t automatically assume I’m already writing my ballot. This includes warrants of cards, cross-ex arguments that are relevant, and analytics that make solid arguments.
Written RFDs: I will more than likely write a lot because I think there is always room to grow, both as a team and as an individual speaker. PLEASE do not take this as me bashing you or anything because it is not, this is an educational activity and I am trying to ensure that you do get additional benefit from the round. Take my comments or not, that is your decision, but just know they will be written for you just the same.
Do what you do best, but understand that there is a difference between being aggressive and being a jerk.
