CANCELLED WVSDA State

2020 — Morgantown, WV/US

NCFL Qualifier Selection (Added: 03.02.2020)

Because we are using the WVSDA State Tournament to select our qualifiers for the NCFL Grand National Tournament, please review your entries to identify which of your students will be competing for the qualifying spots.  At the beginning of the WVSDA tournament, coaches will be asked to identify the students wanting to attend Nationals so that a separate list of qualifiers can be published.

Students who qualify in Congress but who are also competing to qualify in a different event at the WVSDA tournament may wait until after the WVSDA tournament to declare their event for the NCFL national tournament.

Speech Events

Students will receive the Nationals qualifying spots based upon their final placement within the respective events: Extemp, Original Oratory, Oral Interp, HI/DI, Duo and Declamation

Debate Events

For Public Forum and Lincoln/Douglas, the following selection criteria will be used:

  1. Finalists automatically qualify for the NCFL national tournament.
  2. The semi-finalist with the best record in the prelim rounds automatically qualifies.
  3. If the two semi-finalists are tied based upon preliminary record and both wish to attend the NCFL national tournament, the non-advancing semi-finalists will debate one another for the final slot.
  4. If all debate slots have not been allocated as a result of the above tie breaks, the quarterfinalist with the best preliminary record qualifies for the NCFL national tournament.
  5. If two or more quarterfinalists are tied for best preliminary record and want to attend the NCFL national tournament, the two highest seeded debaters based upon preliminary tie breaks will debate for the final qualifying slot.
  6. If quarter finals are not required, the highest seeded non-advancing debater based upon preliminary tie breaks will receive the final qualifying slot.
