Badgerland Debate Tournament

2017 — WI/US

Novice Policy Info

Badgerland's policy division provides a unique opportunity for Wisconsin novice debaters to meet and debate with those from other states. This means some bending of the Wisconsin standard rules for the division.

1) Cases/Arguments. The Wisconsin novice packet can be found at: http://wdca.org/resources/novice-packet . This should allow out of state teams to be substantially aware of what the Wisconsin students are running. This year, as in the past, we ask that participating teams disclose what they are running if different from the Wisconsin packet/plans. I will create a custom tab on tabroom as the information is shared with me with novice argument info.

2) Judging. Some of our out of state teams were caught a bit off guard with Wisconsin's rule not allowing responsible experienced debaters judge novice. My personal feeling is that most students take the responsibly seriously and provide good feedback to the novices they judge. I think it also gives them great insight into how a judge assesses a round and improves them as debaters.
Thus, I'd like to offer teams the chance to bring upperclassmen varsity debaters to jud ge novice policy.  I ask that you 1) put in a judge note indicating they are a student, 2) if you have an adult judge in novice who SHOULD NOT judge varsity policy that you indicate that in the notes. This will allow us to swap judges between divisions, if needed, without assigning a student to varsity. Finally, for Wisconsin teams in particular, if you have NO student judges and do not want student judges seeing your students, inform me prior to the tournament and I will block them from your entry(ies).
