ETHS Dead Presidents Invitational

2017 — Evanston Township High School, IL/US

Invitation

Evanston Township High School Dead Presidents Invitational

Policy Debate: February 3-5 (Friday-Sunday)
LD and PF: February 4 (Saturday only; doubles as a CCFL Qualifying Tournament for LD/PF)

We will be keeping our extended schedule for policy debate from last year: 2 rounds Friday afternoon, 4 rounds plus octafinals on Saturday, then quarters to finals on Sunday. This tournament will serve as RCC T5.

Change in LD/PF For This Year: We will be running LD and PF one on day, Saturday only. The tournament will serve as the second CCFL Qualifier for LD and PF; CCFL and non-CCFL teams are welcome to compete.

Divisions: Varsity CX, Novice CX, Open LD, Open PF (there will be no novice or JV division for LD and PF).

We will break to octas in policy; we will run five rounds of LD and PF on Saturday. Entry in Varsity and Novice CX will be initially limited to ten teams per school per division; space permitting, we will try to accommodate teams beyond those limits. We will strive to offer mutual preference for judging in varsity CX.

Entry in Open LD and PF will be limited to ten entries per school, but schools interested in qualifying to NCFL Nationals will need to designate their four "qualifying" teams.

We will be using the January topic for Public Forum and the January-February topic for Lincoln-Douglas.

Fees: The entry fee for policy is $45 per team, in line with other RCC tournaments; CDL schools will receive a $15 per team discount. The entry fee for LD and PF is $20 per entry (a $5 dollar decrease from last year).

Online Balloting: We will be using Tabroom's online balloting system in policy to speed up the tournament. We will communicate more about this as we get closer to the tournament, but it is worth noting that judges should have internet capable devices with them at the tournament. There will be an open guest network for wi-fi. Paper ballots available upon request.

Judging: One full judge for every two teams or fraction thereof in each event and each division.

Providing enough hired judges has always been our greatest difficulty; hired judges through the tournament must be requested on Tabroom. The fee for hiring a judge in policy is $300; the fee for hiring a judge in PF or LD is $150. Additionally, we have only a limited supply of judges for hire, available on a first-come first-served basis, so please confirm with us before you rely on hiring your commitment. We don't want your money; we want your judges.

Location: Evanston Township High School
1600 Dodge Ave.
Evanston, IL
60201

Please enter through DOOR 2, on the west/back side of the school, on Friday and Saturday. The main entrance, on Dodge Ave, will be very busy on Friday and entirely closed on Saturday.

Food: To keep costs down, we will again have schools pre-order meals for Friday's dinner and Saturday's lunch and dinner. Please use the meals tab on the registration site to place your orders: dinner on Friday and Saturday will be Subway subs, lunch on Saturday will be Papa John's pizza. Concessions will be available throughout the tournament. We will not have meals for students available for purchase on Friday and Saturday; schools who wish to purchase dinner on Friday or lunch and dinner on Saturday must do so through the website.

Our ETHS family will again provide fantastic food for judges and coaches throughout the weekend.

Humane Practices: We are committed to running a pleasant, healthy, humane tournament. To that end, we will work hard to start rounds on time and finish competition each evening by 9 PM. We will do our best to offer healthy snack options through concessions and in the judge lounge. There will be diversions (ping pong and what-not) available in cafeterias. We will be continuing three special awards: the Crystal E Educator's Award to a critic nominated by students as giving the best feedback to debaters; the Wildkit Coach in Training award to the student judge who writes the most educational and encouraging ballots at the tournament; and the Orange and Blue Cup to a team nominated by students for being exceptionally pleasant to debate against.

Registration and Deadlines: Registration through Tabroom will close on Wednesday, February 1st; all fees become final at 5 PM on the 1st.
