Event Description:

Informative (Disclaimer: In case of a conflict between this list and CHSSA Rules in effect for 2023-24, CHSSA rules take precedence.)

Rules: If a rule is violated, check the violation box on the ballot, but rank the contestant as you would without the violation. Any penalty will be assessed by tournament officials.

A. Visual and audio aids may be used during the presentation. No live animals or other persons may be used as visual aids or to help set up and/or present the speech. All aids must be removed from in front of the audience at the conclusion of the speech.

B. The speech shall be memorized and no manuscript may be used. However, contestants may read material that is printed on visual aids without penalty.

C. No costumes shall be worn by the contestant. Items of dress necessary to the presentation may be put on during the speech. These must be considered aids and may not be part of the speaker's beginning or ending attire.

D. Any alteration to the contestant's physical appearance must be substantially restored to its original state by the end of the performance. Contestants may not use any prop that would be considered contraband.

E. Nothing may be handed or distributed to the judge or other members of the audience.

F. The primary purpose of the speech is to describe, clarify, explain or define an object, idea, concept or process. Fabricated topics/subjects may not be used.

G. The performance must begin and end from the center stage area. Contestants must remain in the staging area throughout the performance.

H. The speech shall be no longer than 10 minutes. Exceeding the time limit by more than 30 seconds (grace period) is a violation. The time limit excludes time to set up and remove aids - the time limit applies to speaking time only. There is no minimum time.

Guidelines for Judging: These are guidelines only, not rules; they should be used only when appropriate to the speech. Keep in mind that there is no requirement that a contestant must use a particular style of delivery. Please use the following to help you evaluate each contestant and rank the round.

Purpose: Any appropriate subject may be used, but the primary purpose of the speech shall be to describe, clarify, explain, and/or define an object, idea, concept, or process. Topics/subjects fabricated by the speaker may not be used. This is a speech to inform, not a performance, and the emphasis should be placed on the oral presentation rather than on audio or visual aids used in support of the informative goal of the speech.

Composition: Did the speech display effective writing? Was the speech organized clearly and easy to follow? Did the speech focus on the stated topic? Did the speech contain evidence, examples, or expert opinions in support of ideas or conclusions?

Delivery: Did the speaker use effective oral presentation skills (volume, diction, speed of delivery)? Was the speaker poised, sincere and comfortable in delivery? Did the speaker use effective body language (gestures, facial expression, eye contact)? Did the speech exemplify the highest standards of language usage, style and vocabulary? Did the speaker avoid slang, poor grammar, and mispronunciations? Did the visual aids (if any) support the content? Were the visual aids handled smoothly and without distraction?
