I debated in high school for four years, so speed is fine. I judge mainly based off of flow, so make sure you emphasize the points you want me to weigh. I won't count any new points that are brought up in the summary and final focus. If you have any specific questions, just ask :)

I am a senior in college studying engineering. I debated PF on the regional and national circuits back in high school.

My process for voting is as follows:

1. What's the most important issue/value in the round
2. Who holds the strongest link into that

I am an ELA teacher and an assistant coach participating in Speech & Debate for the first time. As such, I am still learning many of the more technical aspects of speech & debate; when I am judging, you would do well to consider me more as a lay-person than an expert. That being said, my background in ELA makes me very familiar with argumentative structure and I tend to view arguments through that lens. I am less interested in your technical prowess and more interested in straightforward, philosophically-minded argumentation.

I have debated in PF for 3 years, and I still compete. So, I know quite a bit about the topics. I like numbers as evidence, but I like logical arguments better. If a team runs a logical argument/block DO NOT try to refute it with "do you have a card for that?" because logic is logic. The most important thing for me when making a decision is impact analysis. You need to tell me why your impact will happen and why it matters more than what your opponents are saying will happen.

All this being said, debate is competitive, but you should always have fun doing it. I will probably give higher speaks if you seem like you are enjoying a round; so, go ahead and dab after each speech and make plenty of Harry Potter/The Office/How I Met Your Mother references!

I'm a senior and 4th year public forum debater at Columbus High School. I've debated on both the GA and national circuits.

Speaks:

1. I'm fine with speed. If you are making an important point, you need to slow down to make sure I can flow everything that I need to.

2. I appreciate puns in round. However, if you intentionally make any racist, sexist, or otherwise discriminatory comments, I will give you extremely low speaks and notify your coach.

3. Be assertive, not rude.

Argumentation:

1. I vote off the flow. I try to interfere as little as possible, which means you NEED TO WEIGH. If you don't, I will have to interfere and use my own weighing mechanism.

2. You need to be responding to every argument that's brought up in the round, including their responses to your arguments (frontline!!). You can't just extend your arguments through their responses without telling me why they don't matter and/or why your argument still stands.

3. Signposting is extremely helpful :)

4. NO new arguments should be brought up in final focus.

5. I don't vote off of cross.

Evidence:

1. Every card you read within a debate should be cited and be available almost immediately within context for your opponent to read. I will drop your speaks if you are unable to find or provide your evidence to your opponents or me.

2. Any evidence misrepresentations will factor into my decision. If you are blatantly lying about your cards, I will most likely drop you.

I have debated throughout the state and am pretty simple with my preferences. Speak at a decent pace, I can do speed just don’t spread or I won’t flow. I’m comfortable with lay or tech styles. Final focus should include what was in summary, don’t ever bring up new arguments because I won’t flow them.

I am a parent judge, only Public Forum to date, but don't judge me because of that. I truly care to judge as objectively as possible. To do so, presentations need to be well organized, e.g. It helps when you say, "Contention 1..., Sub-Point A... and so on." When attacking an opponent's contentions and rebuttals, be clear to associate your comments to the respective contention.

Most importantly, know your audience, and speak to your audience, i.e. your judge(s). Clarity of content is equally important to quantity. What does it matter if you think you successfully argued your contentions and defeated every point of your opponent if the judge cannot understand most of what you said, because of partially spoken thoughts and words, due to excessive speed? Don't forget to breath. Use inflection to emphasize points. Use pauses to let points sink in before starting the next point. I cannot judge fairly or objectively what I do not understand because of the speed of your speech.

I promise to give fair, constructive feedback at the conclusion of each debate, and follow up with comments that you can hopefully use to improve your positions.

That said, I'm already impressed with you before you even open your mouth to speak. Having the ambition, courage, and confidence to take on such a difficult endeavor as Speech and Debate, you've already WON my admiration regardless of debate outcomes.

As a PF debater, I definitely will be looking at the synergy of your team, I absolutely hate teams who seem like they don't like each other or have never debated together.

I don't flow cross, but I definitely pay attention, however, if you want it on the ballot it MUST be extended!! I don't tolerate rudeness or arrogance but I definitely enjoy a good pun, especially if it makes me cackle. I require frontlining in all second speeches, such as rebuttal and summary, and please, please, PLEASE signpost.DO NOT extend through ink.
