WSD Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideI am a middle school speech and debate coach. I have been a coach for over ten years, and I have been a judge for the high school level speech and debate tournaments for over five years.
My decisions on debate are based on familiarity with the topic and the complexity of understanding the topic, and refuting the opponent's arguments. Also, important facts should be cited unless you are doing Parliamentary debate, then no citation is needed . Off time road maps also help me keep track of what I should be looking for in your structure.
As for speed, I do not mind speed of speeches but debater must be able to articulate what they are saying. Debater will need to present their speeches rather than just read them from a device or paper. Communicate with the judge .
For Policy debate: as long as I have the cards a head of time, spreading is okay and eye contact during spreading does not need to be made. But, eye contact should be made at some point during cross fire and rebuttals. Delivery of your debate rather than just reading off from your cards is a plus [ except when spreading].
Congressional Debate, I will need to know your names ahead of time and a seat chart is always helpful.
Structure of the speeches must be clear and when asking questions make them purposeful. Also when asking for cards, have a reason to do so. I have judged many debates where the opponent asks for a card and then finds a flaw with the source or finds the context was not as the opponent attended it to be. These are examples of what I am looking for when asking for cards.
I do appreciate the debaters standing when speaking. Try not to be monotone but I do not want a debater to yell at their opponent. Do not mock your opponent. Be respectful when debating. Always a good idea to fist bump or shake hands with your opponent/s after a round or simply saying great job. But DO NOT tell them good job DURING a round.
For World debate. Matter, Style and Strategy are all important. Often I see style dropped in this style of debate. Do not omit this in your debate.
As for Speech. I need to feel the energy in your presentation. Eye contact / camera contact is important. Annunciate and make sure your moves are sharp and distinguished. Also, voices need to match character/s. I have seen EXCELLENT speeches judging online and in person. Both ways deliver great speeches. If doing online, try and make your lighting in front of you versus behind you. Also, make sure that camera is treated like the judge/audience. This way the energy can come through.
I am always impressed the moment I see you in a room. Joining the speech and debate team in school has so many advantages not only while in school but later in life as well.

WSDC asks us to debate on balance and engage with the essential clash of the motion directly. I want to see teams making solid impact analysis and taking the other team's highest ground on directly, while demonstrating to me that they would still prefer their world given a best case scenario outcome on both sides. I also would encourage you all to summarize the debate by the third and reply and give me clash categories / big picture themes. This will help me (and all of your judges) make a clearer decision and process the information of the debate more easily. A judge will find it easier to vote your your side if you make it easy for them to do so by giving the judge what is essentially RFD in your impact analysis and weighing.
I have experience debating in Worlds in high school and British Parliamentary in undergrad and coach a Worlds team currently.

I prefer all of my speakers to make sure that any contentions, plans or the like are clear and always link back to the topic at hand. You're free to run theory or K at your peril. I've heard great rounds on Afro-pessimism and bad rounds on it. I've loved a round full of theory and hated rounds full of theory. All depends on how it's done, and what the point of it.
I am a social studies teacher, so I can't unknow the rules of American government or economics. Don't attempt to stay something that is factually inaccurate that you would know in your classes.
Be respectful of all parties in the room - your opponent(s), your partner (if applicable) and the judge. Hurtful language is in not something I tolerate. Pronouns in your names are an added plus.
Speaking clearly, even if fast, is fine, but spreading can be difficult to understand, especially through two computers. I will say "Clear" if I need to. In an online format, please slow down for the first minute if possible. I haven't had to listen to spreading with online debate.
For LD, I don't mind counterplans and theory discussions as long as they are germane to the topic and as long as they don't result in debating the rules of debate rather than the topic itself. In the last year most of my LD rounds have not been at TOC bid tournaments, but that doesn't mean I can't follow most arguments, but be patient as I adjust.
Truth > tech.
*It's work to make me vote on extinction or nuclear war as a terminal impact in any debate. That link chain needs to be solid if you're doing to expect me to believe it.*
In PF, make sure that you explain your terminal impacts and tell me why I should weight your impacts vs your opponents' impacts.
WSD - I have been around enough tournaments to know what I should hear and I will notice if you're not doing it well. Thinking global always. Models should always be well explained and match the focus on the round. Fiat is a tricky thing in the event now but use it as you see fit.
I have been involved in forensics since 2019, first as a competitor and now as a coach. My main focus has always been public forum but I am well experienced in judging and overall consuming all forms of debate. Put simply even with that said I prefer to be treated as a lay judge; I like explanations, I like consumable argumentation, and I hate spreading. With that said one thing I will accept is very "techy" approaches that the average lay judge may not pick up on, most notably Ks. With that said in each form of debate I expect you to be able to relate your arguments to the natural conditions of a win within your round that being a frame work, value, or simple Cost/Benefit analysis. Over all I'm here for the spirit of debate and only have 3 rules: be respectful, try your hardest, and do not spread.
Hello! My name is Anahita (she/her). I debated WSD at Notre Dame High School for four years. Now, I am a college student at Northeastern University judging tournaments. As a judge, I prioritize creating a respectful, educational space where all voices are heard and valued. I expect debates to avoid offensive language or bigotry and maintain a positive atmosphere. I prefer a clear framework to help me follow along, and I encourage strong impact analysis that connects each argument to a real-world scenario. As this is WORLD schools, I look for international examples along with domestic examples. I also welcome a definitions or burdens debate, as I believe they add depth and clarity to the debate. Direct clash is essential, and I encourage debaters to summarize their cases by the third and reply speeches, with solid "two-world" scenarios to help me weigh impacts. I value good sportsmanship throughout the round, and I do not encourage spreading. Please be clear, and most importantly, please have fun!

Please don’t be racist, homophobic, etc. I like sassy, aggressive debaters who enjoy what they do but dislike sullen, mean students who don't really care-- an unpleasant attitude will damage your speaker points.
Generally,
Speed: Speed hasn't been a problem but I don't tell you if I need you to be more clear-- I feel it's your job to adapt. If you don't see me typing, you probably want to slow down. I work in tabroom in WA state an awful lot, so my flowing has slowed. Please take that into consideration.
Tech = Truth: I’ll probably end up leaning more tech, but I won’t vote for weak arguments that are just blatantly untrue in the round whether or not your opponents call it out.
Arguments:
I prefer a strong, developed NEG strategy instead of running a myriad of random positions.
I love it when debaters run unique arguments that they truly believe and offer really high speaker points for this. (I'm not inclined to give high speaks, though.)

T - I love a well-developed T battle but rarely hear one. I don't like reasonability as a standard-- it's lazy, do the work.
Ks - I like debaters who truly believe in the positions they’re running. I like critical argumentation but if you choose to run an alt of "embrace poetry" or "reject all written text", you had better fully embrace it. I’m in touch with most literature, but I need a lot of explanation from either side as to why you should win it in the final rebuttals.
Don’t like but will vote on if won:
“Debate Bad” - I DO NOT LIKE "Debate is Futile" arguments. Please don't tell me what we are doing has no point. I will listen to your analysis. I may even have to vote for it once in a while. But, it is not my preference. Want a happy judge? Don't tell me that how we are spending another weekend of our lives is wasting our time.
Very, very, very... VERY traditional LD - if you are reading an essay case, I am not the judge for you.
Not a huge fan of disclosure theory-- best to skip this.

Substance > Style
Don't rehash, bring up new points prevalent to the debate. I love to see refutation particularly after the first two speeches. Please, lets move on if we are just going to say the same thing over and over.
Every time you speak in a session, it gives me more reasons to rank you at the end of the round. Fight to give those speeches and use questions! Don't let any of that direct questioning time go to waste!!!

I did traditional LD in high school. I am a traditional LD judge. You can run some arguments but disguise them as more traditional and focus on that style to keep me a happy judge. Take that into account. Don't spread I won't understand. Explain your arguments clearly and you'll be fine. No Meta-Ethics or trix.
Side note: Please make sure you are educated on the 2024 Jan/Feb LD topic... I don't want to hear arguments that are factually untrue, and I'm excited for well-informed debates that get into the depths of this subject! I've written articles on this topic that you could use as a card-- I know it well.

I'm judging more and more pufo these days. I like clear, well organized constructives. Don't just read everything one note. I appreciate that public forum is supposed to be different than LD and Policy. Keep it that way.
Random framework arguments about the intent of the topic aren't going to work for me. If things change in the status quo, you need to be prepared to discuss them.

The most important thing to know if you're going to be debating in my room is how much I value fair and thorough engagements! This looks like making concessions where necessary (when the cases have been properly analyzed and are logical) and engaging in fair and charitable comparisons.
Next up, don't be rude or disrespectful! Avoid racist and discriminatory slurs. I am more than willing to penalize debaters on this basis.
Thirdly, I am fully cognizant of the fact that speakers have a lot of material to cover in such a small time, but please make sure you don't excessively speed through those arguments! DO NOT SPREAD. If I can't hear it in your speech, I will not flow. Please speak clearly so your opponents and I understand you.
Finally, always be conscious of your burdens in the debate and do justice to them. Do not merely assert, justify those claims.

I am the Assistant Debate Coach for Notre Dame High School in charge of World School Debate and IPPF (essay writing form of debate). I have extensive public speaking experience, presenting at multiple conferences in front of hundreds, sometimes thousands of people.
I competed in Policy Debate for 3 years in high school at Notre Dame, so my biases tend towards the quality of arguments. As such, most rounds will be won for me in Content, and sometimes in Strategy. Although I will grade Style as an important factor, there is almost no world where a team will win a World School debate round based on Style as the primary factor. Good speaking habits, flow, inflection, and use of creative language can only help you, but it will not determine the round for me. That will be decided primarily on Content and how you address the primary issues of the debate.
Although some judges may frown upon a framework debate (definitions, models, values, burdens, etc.), I welcome them. Give me the framework by which I should judge the round, give me a reason to prefer your overall framework/definitions/values/burdens, and most importantly, explicitly "connect the dots" and explain how you meet those burdens better than the other team. Even if you agree on burdens and definitions, you must still explain how you meet these burdens better than your opponents. Failing to do this (primarily in the 3rd and reply speeches, but can be helpful to begin this discussion as early as the 2nd speech) and leaving it up to me to connect the dots will cost you both Content and Strategy points in your speaker scores, and could lead to some flukey results when I'm left to determine how best to judge the round.
On framework: if you offer a "hard" model as the Prop, you need to make sure it's "topical" and fully meets the motion of the round. I think very few World School debates (especially for impromptu motions) specifically call for or need a "hard" model. This isn't policy debate. I'm willing to grant you a decent amount of leniency on the mechanism(s) for achieving the world of the motion, so a "soft" model will help you. But if you paint yourself into a corner with a "hard" model or "plan," and it doesn't fully meet the motion's requirements, I'm open to hearing that debate from the Opp if they call you out on it.
Additionally, I will apply a reasonable sense of “reality” when judging the debate. In other words, if you make a factually untrue argument or give an blatantly false or mischaracterized example, it’s not gonna hold a lot of water with me, regardless of whether or not the other team calls it out. That said, I will refrain as much as possible from applying any of my own personal opinions or values in the debate. That’s up to you to shape, but be careful about crossing any ethical lines that could be considered disparaging to another group.
On that note, "sportsmanship" is very important to me. Respect the competition, respect your teammates, and respect your opponents. Shake hands, congratulate people, and do not use disparaging language towards any person or group. If you do so, I will absolutely make a note of it in my RFD and you will likely lose speaker points. This is a bare minimum expectation.
That said, debate doesn’t need to be a “stuffy” activity. Feel free to smile, crack a joke, try to make me laugh. The best speeches are the ones that you enjoy delivering and people delight in having heard. At the end of the day, HAVE FUN!
Finally, my RFD notes are typically short. I prefer to give my decision directly to debaters after the round, offer individual notes and feedback, and break down why I came to the conclusion I did. This can take maybe 5-15 minutes, but this is where people can learn and grow the most. I know people are anxious to leave after a debate, but please take the time to learn and respect what I have to say for a few minutes after I listened to you and your team for an hour. I'm an open book, so take the opportunity to ask me questions, request feedback, and I'll do all I can to help.

I'm the current assistant coach at Coppell High School where I also have the lovely opportunity to teach Speech & Debate to great students. I did LD, Policy, and Worlds in High School (Newark Science '15) and a bit of Policy while I was in college (Stanford '19). I'm by no means "old" but I've been around long enough to appreciate different types of debate arguments at this point. As long as you're having fun, I can feel it and will probably have fun listening to you, too!

This is now my main event nowadays. Given my LD/Policy background, I do rely very heavily on my flow. That doesn't mean you have to be very techy--you should and can group arguments and do weighing--but I try my best to not just ignore concessions. Framing matters a lot to me because it helps me filter what impacts I should care about most by the end of the debate.

Credentials that people seem to care about: senior (BA + MA candidate) at Stanford, Director of LD at the Victory Briefs Institute, did LD, policy, and worlds schools debate in high school, won/got to late elims in all of those events, double qualled to TOC in LD and Policy. Did well my freshman year in college in CX but didn't pursue it much after that. Now I coach and judge a bunch.
LD + Policy
Literally read whatever you want. If I don't like what you've read, I'll dock your speaks but I won't really intervene in the debate. Don't be sexist, ableist, racist, transphobic, homophobic, or a classist jerk in the round. Don't make arguments that can translate to marginalized folks not mattering (this will cloud my judgement and make me upset). I've also been mostly coaching and judging World Schools debate the past two years so you're going to need to slow down for me for sure. As the tournament goes on my ear adjusts but it's likely I'll say "slow" to get you to slow down. After 3 times, I won't do it anymore and will just stop listening.

I understand this. If reading against a K team I'd encourage you to make argument about how fairness/education relates to the theory of power/epistemology of the K. Would make all of our lives better and more interesting.

I also understand this. But don't abuse the privilege. I am not a friv theory fan so don't read it if you can (or else I might miss things as you blip through things).
Plans/CP/DAs
I understand this too. Slow down when the cards are shorter so I catch the tags.
I don't default to anything necessarily however I do know my experiences and understandings of debate were shaped by me coming from a low income school that specialized in traditional and critical debate. I've been around as a student and a coach (I think) long enough to know my defaults are subject to change and its the debaters' job to make it clear why theory comes first or case can be weighed against the K or RVIs are good or the K can be leveraged against theory. I learn so much from you all every time I judge. Teach me. Lead me to the ballot. This is a collaborative space so even if I have the power of the ballot, I still need you to tell me things. Otherwise, you might get a decision that was outside of your control and that's never fun.
On that note, let it be known that if you're white and/or a non-black POC reading afropessimism or black nihilism, you won't get higher than a 28.5 from me. The more it sounds like you did this specifically for me and don't know the literature, the lower your speaks will go. If you win the argument, I will give you the round though so either a) go for it if this is something you actually care about and know you know it well or b) let it go and surprise me in other ways. If you have a problem with this, I'd love to hear your reasons why but it probably won't change my mind. I can also refer other authors you can read to the best of my ability if I'm up to it that day.
Last thing, please make sure I can understand you! I understand spreading but some of y'all think judges are robots. I don't look at speech docs during the round (and try not to after the round unless I really need to) so keep that in mind when you spread. Pay attention to see if I'm flowing. I'll make sure to say clear if I can't understand you. I'll appreciate it a lot if you keep this in mind and boost your speaks!
I debated in policy for The Blake School for four years (2009-2013) and then I debated for Rutgers University-Newark in college (2013-2017). I ran mostly policy based arguments in high school and mostly critical arguments in college. I was an assistant coach (policy and public forum) with the Blake School until 2019 and then coached policy and congress at Success Academy from 2019-2023. Feel free to run any arguments you want whether it be critical or policy based. The only thing that will never win my ballot is any argument about why racism, sexism, etc. is good. Other than that do you. I really am open to any style or form of argumentation.
I do not have many specific preferences other than I hate long overviews - just make the arguments on the line-by-line.
I am not going to read your evidence unless there is a disagreement over a specific card or if you tell me to read a specific card. I am not going to just sit and do the work for you and read a speech doc.
Note on clash of civ debates - I tend to mostly only judge clash of civ debates - In these debates I find it more persuasive if you engage the aff rather than just read framework. But that being said I have voted on framework in the past.
PF - Please please please read real cards. If its not in the summary I won't evaluate it in the final focus. Do impact calculus it makes a a majority of my decisions. Stop calling for cards if you aren't going to do the evidence comparison. I will increase your speaker points if you do an email chain with your cards prior to your speech. Collapsing is important in the summary and final focus. Yes you can go fast if you are clear. I am open to theory and kritical argumentation - just ensure you are clearly warranting everything.
I have coached middle school speech and debate teams and have also judged high school speech and debate tournaments for at least five years. For debate, if you want me to hear you, stress your points and look at me. I know you might want to get as much information in as you can, but if speaking quickly make sure your words do not roll over each other. Speech, look at your judge and your gestures and voice and volume must bring energy to your piece.
Debate:
I do not mind assertiveness , but must remain polite towards your opponent. Cite your evidence when needed , unless you are doing a style that does not need citations, and when asking for cards, make sure you are doing so for a reason and not to buy time.
Speech:
Energy, volume, gestures must go with your speech. Do not add gestures just to do so, make them meaningful.

General Preferences

Top Level: I want to enjoy listening to the debate even if it is material or subject matter that is not in my wheelhouse. I like debaters with personality versus people that debate like robots. I tend err on the side of truth versus tech all things being equal. Most importantly, you should do what you do best and I will do my best to listen to what happens in the debate and make a decision .

Argumentation: I will listen to most arguments but have reservations about theory arguments in LD. Topicality is a critical issue, and I approach it with the same caution and deliberation as a death penalty case.

Topicality- I judge T debates like a death penalty case so I tend to vote aff in most T debates after careful thought. This means you better be sure before going for T.

Framework: I understand and can adjudicate policy arguments, kritiks, counterplans, and disadvantages. I am more than willing to listen to arguments that challenge the norms of debate.

Flowing: I flow debates most of the time, so clarity and organization in presentation are crucial..

Decision-Making: I will vote for the team that provides the clearest and most coherent arguments by the end of the debate.Ultimately, my goal is to reward the team that engages in a thoughtful and logical debate while adhering to the expectations set within the round.
World Schools
I try judge worlds debates as an informed citizen. I value argument development down the bench. I also value a style that engages me as a member of the audience. I want debaters to explain my role as the judge in the debate and how I should make decisions. The debaters that do I great job at writing my ballot win with good points.
