Debate Judges Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show Hideinfo
kcis '25!!
did pf+speech(rarely but I'll put this here), and currently in the third year of doing policy debate!
preferences in sd&pf
-quality>quantity: i prefer seeing good evidence and arguments warranted out clearly than a whole list of arguments(or evidence) read during your speeches without any deeper explanation or further extension in later speeches. 1 good argument that is well-warranted and well extended throughout the round >> 5 arguments that were read once and poorly explained
-tech>truth
-write the reason for decision(rfd) for me in your final speeches(summary+final focus): i would prefer seeing arguments and/or contentions laid out for me to evaluate; tell me why you win and what you are winning on
-do clashes: I will most likely not vote for you if there isn't an attempt to clash with your opponent's argument(even if you tell a good story of your arguments) a huge part of debate is about clash, tell me why I should prefer your argument over your opponent's
-impact calculus
-> however you want to do impact calc is okay for me, just make sure you have it in your final speech telling me what i should vote on and on what level do you outweigh the opposing side
-> i'd like to see statistics brought up while doing impact calc, it allows me evaluate args quantitatively while making my decision(which boosts your chances of winning ofc:)
additionals:
-i prefer line by line given during speeches(esp the rebuttal speech)that specifically answers your opponent's argument, it makes the whole debate organized, clear, and easy to flow for both me and your opponents
-i will not evaluate anything extended in ff that is not in the summary speech
-speaker points: i generally give high speaks; prefer clarity over speed but speed doesn't really matter for me, as long as it is clear and understandable it should be fine for me.
-time your speeches. you should keep track of your own speech/cx/prep time
-flow flow flow(preferably on paper b/c its much easier)
-lastly.. be respectful and enjoy the tournament!
--if you have any questions regarding my paradigm, feel free to ask preround
-TES'24
-I debate at ADL
-He/Him
-email: 1234jaychu@gmail.com
I will do my best to follow the debate - be clear and do organized line by line
Clarity>Speed (But im ok with spreading)
Clear impact calc for me to evaluate
Slow down on tags and non-evidence args
I have debated in elementary, middle and high school for a total of 5 years. I have done Public Forum, Policy, and Lincoln Douglas. I have judged secondary students for almost 3 years now. I am a flow judge based on argumentation and impact calculus.
hi! I'm Emma :) my pronouns are she/her/hers, and I'm a junior (class of '25) debating with ADL and attending TES (for those of you in Taiwan). I'm in my fourth year of CX, but I also do some extemp, world schools, and PF on the side. feel free to email me at eyhchuo@gmail.comfor any questions!
Smart Debate (SD)/Public Forum (PF)
it's difficult to lay out reasons in exact bullet-points for what you should do for me to vote for you (because they depend on the substance and technical debating in different rounds), but here are a few things I believe in which help me judge:
1 --- tech over truth. if you tell me the sky is pink and the other team doesn't tell me otherwise, I think it's true for the sake of the debate round. that being said, I will not vote on that argument alone without you telling me why it matters, which leads me to:
2 --- framing/judge instruction. I need to know how you want me to evaluate the debate --- i.e. which arguments you think matter and why they matter + why you think, under that framing, your arguments matter more than your opponents' arguments. to explain that, you need:
3 --- well-explained link and internal link stories. you need to tell me what your arguments mean for me to vote for you and even make a decision at all! also, if I don't know what your arguments mean, it's likely that I won't understand the ways that you're using an argument (e.g. if you say that your contention A answers their contention B, but not tell me what contention A means, I won't understand why contention A can be used to rebut contention B, which means that I'll probably still give **close to** 100% risk to contention B.). finally:
4 --- impact/why your story matters. you should try to do impact calculus to tell me why your arguments matter more than your opponents'. this way I can decide between two different stories from two different sides.
+ I absolutely LOVE smart link and impact turns so if you can win on that you’re amazing but even if you don’t end up winning on it I’ll give you some extra you’re-a-smart-person speaker points
Speaks
usually I give out speaks within the 27.5-29.5 range; if you get higher than that, you are extraordinary. am literally hailing you you are my favorite speaker ever I tell all my friends about you keep up the good work you are a literal boss. if you get lower for that, it's most likely just because of discriminatory or disrespectful behavior that I do not and will not tolerate in any instance. please please just be nice.
if you're in the bottom half of the 27.5-29.5 range, my suggestion would be to practice your speech more and be more confident in it because it was probably great; speak louder & read clearer. if you're in the top half of this range, congrats! keep it up! for more detailed comments about speaks though, you can always ask me through email, in person, etc.
Others
I do NOT tolerate any discriminatory behavior (racist, homophobic, sexist, etc, or being rude to your partner or opponents). I'll do my best to make this a safe space because what really matters is that you get a place to speak about your ideas --- so please do reciprocate by being nice to everyone.
thanks for reading & enjoy your debates! :)
for pf
- frontline (respond to their responses) if you're second rebuttal
- extend with warrants (reason why your argument is true) or it's not extended
- if you want it in final focus, talk about it in summary
- i wont vote on disclosure
- dont be a jerk
Any seamless reference to Avatar the Last Airbender will receive an additional +.25 to +.5 speaker points based on how much your reference is the quenchiest.

•Technicality: take care to explain to me why I should vote for you-- provide coherent links & impacts
•Crossfires: I enjoy a good show.
•Speed: no spreading please :) I want to understand every word.
•Do judges even follow their own paradigms?
hi!
my email is : megansufire@gmail.com
I've done sd, pf and cx
voting:
- I will not vote on new arguments in the rebuttal
- If you want to go for an argument, make sure to WEIGH your arguments with you opponents e.g. impact calc
- remember to have WARRANTS explain to me exactly why I should vote on you arguments (don't just say your arguments are better and move on)
- I do not flow new arguments in the rebuttals, make you extend the argument you want to go for throughout the speeches
- even if your opponents concede to an argument, I will not vote on it if you don't extend warrants
- always COLLAPSE don't try to go for every argument, extending one very well will give you a higher chance of winning
tips:
- I probably don't know you topic very so make sure to explain it to me
- try to flow the debate so you keep organized
- rebuttals are not for new contentions (explain why your arguments are more important and why the opponents are false) don't move on after the tags
- try to use up the whole speech time
- I like line by line
- communicating with your partner is important --- always be on the same page
- I try to time your speeches but you can do it yourself to be safe
crossfire:
- always be POLITE!!
- try to not have a silent crossfire
- only ask clarifying questions when necessary
- I DON'T FLOW CROSS! if something important happened, be sure to mention it in your speech for me to weigh
- cx is always closed unless both sides agree to it
presentation/speaks:
- I don't really pay attention to presentation unless it affects my ability to understand you arguments
- speed isn't an issue if you're clear!!
- ALWAYS be polite to everyone (meaning don't laugh/speak loudly during your opponent's speeches)
>29.5 --- you're a very good speaker and have a good chance of winning
29 --- you're very good!
27-28 --- average
<27 --- you were either very rude or said something highly offensive
have fun ;)
October 2022 update: I am unfamiliar with the 22-23 high school topic and this will be the first time I judge this resolution - please keep this in mind before you spread through your blocks :)
Conflicts: ADL. My pronouns are He/Him. Add me to the chain: junxuan.ethan@gmail.com
Stolen from Dylan Willett: I am in Taiwan which is at minimum 13 hours ahead of the tournament I am judging so make sure to start off at a pace where I can adapt to your speed and speed up progressively through the speech because I might begin the debate a bit groggy.
I will judge the debate based on the flow. That said, I'm not too familiar with high theory Ks, but I will try my best to adapt to whatever argument style presented in the debate.
I lean negative on most theory arguments. I lean AFF on T, and I find reasonability a very persuasive argument when argued well. Please don't let this dissuade you from going for T - good debating can overcome most of my preferences/biases.
I won't judge kick the CP unless the 2NR tells me to. Impact calculus is very important. The Cap K is a very good argument if your link explanation goes beyond "state bad".
hi everyone im ashley
heres my gmail if you have any questions---> ashleyting1227@gmail.com
debate background --->
I have been doing debate for three years now.
I'm pretty familiar with a lot of the subjects or structures of pf and sd.
PF+SD how I vote --->
quick notes
- I will time your prep and speeches for you but it's still better if you time yourself
- NEVER BE RUDE TO EITHER YOUR OPPONENTS OR TEAMMATE
- I am a flow judge but I will not flow cross if you want to extend something from cross make sure you explain it
- note that recently I've been doing cx more so i might not know the topics as well as you so explain your arguments clearly, assume that I don't know anything, and you'll do great.
judging style/ most important key points
1. especially in sd and npf pls use up all of your time in ALL your speeches
2. warrants please not just cards
- explain to me why your card is important to this round
- don't just extend the tag!!!!!
3. collapse collapse collapse collapse collapse
- by the time you reach your final focus DO NOT extend everything
- start deciding which arguments are most important to this debate in your summary
4. go for something that you have extended throughout the whole debate
- i won't evaluate anything that was not extended throughout the debate!!!!
5. tech>truth
6. WEIGH PLS WEIGH PLS WEIGH PLS
- pleas have impact calc at least in your final focus
- if you have a team also do a little bit in your summary
- as a fyi you don't have to and say you win on all three prob, mag, and timeframe again collapse!
speaker points--->
- again never be rude to anyone
- don't interrupt your opponents (especially in cross)
- remember not to get mad at your partner they are trying their best
- flowing is v important to me pls flow for your speaks
- make sure you also let your partner get stuff in during cross as well
- understand what you are saying so you don't stumble a lot
- be efficient during cross!
rubric
* your points are based on the key points above *
29 and up: you are a good speaker there is not much you need to improve on
28 area: you are an above-average speaker, there is little you need to work on regarding your speaking
27.5 area: you are an average speaker there is definitely room for improvement but you are not a bad speaker
27 or below: I rarely give 27 or below speaks but if I do give you 27 or below. two reasons. first i either think you aren't taking this debate seriously. or second you were either being very rude or mean to someone in the round.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
lastly, remember to work hard and have fun you'll do great good luck everyone

SPEECH
Experience
Top Speaker, Extemporaneous Debate (NSDA 2019)
Second Speaker, Novice Policy (Michigan 2019)
Champion, Storytelling (NSDA 2016)
Voting
I am generous with speaker points! Here is some advice that aligns with how I judge:
a) Don't forget to be confident and stay engaged with your speech.
b) Look around the room and not just at your parent or your paper.
c) Respect your peers and their time.
DEBATE
Experience
Quarterfinalist, Novice Policy (Michigan 2019)
Finalist, JV Policy (Berkeley 2020)
PF/SD
Please explain the magnitude, probability, and timeframe of your winning argument(s).
Clarification about arguments in crossfire is okay, but I will dock speaker points if you hadn't been flowing.
Do not rely on me to time your speech.
No clash ≠ judge intervention.
Evidence quality > quantity.
Tech > Truth.
Be nice, please!
SPEAKER POINTS
29.7-30 Exceptional.
29.4-29.6 Above average.
28.6-29.3 Keep doing what you're doing!
28-28.5 Average.
27-27.9 You're getting there.
<27 There's room to grow.

I am currently a policy debater at Taipei American School and at ADL (1A/2N)
I prefer tech over truth
I’m fine with any arguments as long as the warrants are clear
Impact calculus and evidence weighing is helpful
Your goal in the final speeches should be to write the ballot for me
I don’t factor presentation into my decision
Go as fast as you want- but make sure you’re clear enough for me to flow it
I have debated in high school for 2 years and I also have coached elementary and middle school debaters. I mainly debate in PF and world schools formats. I judge debates based on the overall presentation but arguments are valued more compared to delivery or strategy of arguments. I feel fine with any speed and i feel fine about kritik and counter plans with no particular preference. It all depends on the quality and the analysis of arguments.
