Hello,

Good morning! Thank you all for signing up to participate in the SpeakfortheArts Online Debate Tournament and helping Empower Expression grow; Empower Expression's team really appreciates your support.

We have a few tournament updates:

First, today at 7:00 PM EST is the deadline to enter entries for the tournament. If you are not sure if you are registered completely, please let me know.

Second, we currently do not have enough competitors in Congress to have break rounds, but we are vigorously contacting people to raise the numbers. I highly encourage you to persuade your friends and/or team members to sign up to allow for the coveted out round experience :).

Third, we have posted the schedule on the tournament website for the prelim rounds/sessions on June 6th. All times are in EST. We will post the schedule for the second day soon, as it depends on entry numbers. However, it will most likely be from 10:00 AM to early afternoon EST.

Fourth, we have changed the judge obligation in PF and LD to one judge per 1-2 entries, rather than the previous obligation of one judge per 1 entry. If you would like to hire a judge, we are requesting a $15 judge fee. Please contact us to take care of this. Given the fundraising nature of the tournament, we do not want this fee to hinder participation, so if this is a burden, please let us know.

Fifth, all of the payable email invoices for entry fees have been sent out for competitors as of yesterday. If you are having trouble with this or did not receive the email please let me know.

Lastly, we will be sending out more updates and information about the tournament in the next few days. We are beyond excited to have all of you! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Best,
Kate Li

Hello,

Good morning! With only 3 days until competition begins, we have a few updates and issues that need to be addressed.

Firstly, make sure you enter your judges by tomorrow morning or let me know that you need to hire a judge ASAP.
Please make sure your judges have created a tabroom account, otherwise they will not be able to fill out online ballots (which is no bueno).
Please also make sure your judges have filled out their paradigm. Your judges can complete/access their paradigm through their tabroom account homepage under "Judging."

Secondly, due to an inadequate amount of entries in the alumni divisions, we have combined the high school and alumni divisions. This will have a very minimal effect on competition.

Thirdly, we are allowing observers for this tournament. However, if a team/competitor is uncomfortable with having observers in a round, they can choose to not have observers.
If you, your students, or any outside spectators would like to observe, please email me with a list of their names, emails, and the rounds they would like to observe. We will use that list to ensure the security of rounds.

Fourthly, please have your students fill out the Video Release form on the tournament website and email speakforthearts@empowerexpression.org the filled out form(s). We will not release any videos of rounds, so the threat of cases being prematurely exposed will not exist.

Fifthly, we have sent out all the email payable invoices for entry fees and judge hire fee (that we are currently aware of), please take care of those as soon as you can. If we have made a mistake on your invoice or you have not received your invoice, please let us know.

Lastly, please have your students do a practice round or some exercise with online debating, specifically using zoom. PLEASE read the congress, PF, and LD rules on the tournament website and let me know of any questions you have.
The classrooms.cloud platform we will be using models a building virtually, where you will be able to access "rooms" by entering a password. This will place you in a zoom call with your fellow competitors/judges.

Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Until the next obnoxiously long email (I'm very sorry about this, and I will try to make the next emails shorter),
Kate Li
