NMSDA State Speech and Debate Tournament

Entry Rules, Events and Event Rules

School Eligibility:

A school must be an NMAA member and an NMSDA member to participate in the state tournament. To become an NMSDA member, a school must have paid its $50 annual dues. See "Deadlines and Fees" tab for more information.

Student Eligibility:

A student must be eligibile under NMAA academic guidelines.

 

No students are considered eligible to participate in the tournament until the NMAA eligibility form has been received by the NMSDA president. See "Eligibility Form/Expectations" tab.

 

Entry Fees:

Entry fees are $8 per student per event. (A partner event is therefore $16 total.) These must be paid during designated registration times or students may not compete. If a coach is unable to make a designated time, he or she must contact the NMSDA president prior to the start date of the tournament to make other arrangements for paying ahead of time.

Impromptu, as a consolation event, has an entry fee of $5. 

 

Entry Restrictions:

School Restrictions:

A school may enter no more than 6 entries into every debate division (6 in Varsity LD, 6 in Novice LD, etc). A school may enter no more than 4 entries into every speech event.

 

Student Entry Restrictions:

A student may enter a maximum of four events at the state tournament under the following guidelines and restrictions: 

a. All students may enter up to two speech events (including duo interp).

b. All students may also enter in one debate division.

c. All students may enter into student congress.

 

d. No student may enter into both US and International Extemp.

e. No student may enter into more than one debate event or division. (Congress does not count toward this restriction. Any student may enter Student Congress regardless of their other events.)

f. Any student may enter the Big Questions invitational, with the exception that students participating in extemp may not enter BQ.

Public Forum Debate (single division: novices compete against varisty in PF) 

*To qualify as a novice competitor, a student (or BOTH students in a PF or CX team) must be in their first year of competition, or be in their second year of competition with less than 12 debate rounds (of any kind of debate) experience from their first year.
