Bellaire Novice Extravaganza
2019 — Online, TX/US
Extemp Topics
This event will be run a little differently from a normal tournament but it is designed to let novices focus on extemp style, content and length of speech. There will not be a draw prior to each extemp round. Everyone will use the six topics listed below. Topics will be assigned according to speaker position on the schedule. The student scheduled to speak first will speak on topic #1; the student scheduled to speak second will speak on topic #2; etc. Each round the student will get a different speaker position. In the case of students speaking out of order the judge will have the original schedule with the original order and the students will still speak on the topic corresponding to their original speaker position on the schedule (if first speaker is late to their round the second speaker can go ahead and speak using the second topic…when the first speaker arrives he/she will still speak on the first topic.) By disclosing the topics for this tournament ahead of time we will NOT be offering 30 minutes of preparation. Students can work on speech construction and content prior to the start of the tournament.) The following topics will be used at this year’s tournament:
- Can the strong U.S. economy survive until 2020?
- Is Medicare for All a good idea for America?
- Can Kim Jong Un be trusted to denuclearize the Korean peninsula?
- Has President Trump gone too far with trade tariffs?
- Which Democratic Presidential candidate has the best chance to defeat President Trump in 2020?
- Does Russian hacking pose a threat to the U.S. 2020 elections?
