Entry/Judge Requirements

Student Entries: Students may enter two speech/debate events (HI, DI, duo, info, OO, POI, IX, USX, LD, PFD, CX) in addition to congress (Senate and House). Students who are doubling in team events (duo, PFD, CX) must do so with the same partner. Students may NOT double in debate events. Students who are entered in more than one event must complete the single entry letter of intent, which is signed by the coach and must be turned in by on-site registration. Students must complete eligibility requirements in order to compete at districts. Tabroom will tell you if your students are eligible or not. You can see requirements on page 68 of the unified manual.

School Limits: Each school receives a total number of speech/debate entries based on its strength (members and degrees). Within that total, only four entries per event are allowed. Schools also receive congress quotas based on strength.

Judges: You must provide 1 judge for every 4 entries in speech and congress. You must provide 1 judge for every 2 entries in debate. We want to send our best kids to nationals, and we want the best judges we can get! The head coach of each school must be listed as a judge. We also prefer that judges have been out of high school at least one year (if you must bring a 2022 grad, you will need to mark them in tabroom). All judges are expected to judge public forum, regardless of whether or not a school has PFD entries. Congress is treated as a separate tournament and a judge can be in a speech or debate pool AND congress. Enter your congress judges before you enter them in speech/debate, otherwise they won’t show as available. Congress judges may be affiliated! If you are used to having to pay a congress fee, now we can use your judges! You may be asked to reduce your entry if you cannot supply adequate judging. All judges must complete the NSDA cultural competency certification, which can be found on tabroom.

Fees: Entries are $20. Missing/hired judges are $60 ($30 for Friday or Saturday only). All schools are assessed $20 for Susan Moore/Harlen Hamm awards. Schools who had volunteers for the 2022 NSDA National Tournament will get free entries to the district tournament, up to $200. This discount will be applied at the close of registration. ALL money owed to the district AND nationals must be paid by on-site registration or your school will not be allowed to compete. Exceptions cannot be made; come prepared with cash or a personal check if your school check is not sufficient.
