PHSSL Districts 1 2 3 16 Qualifier

2023 — Pittsburgh, PA/US

District 2 Invitation

Dear District 2 Coaches,

PHSSL State qualifiers are only a few weeks away! Please note the following information that should help you prepare for those qualifiers! Remember – the state tournament will be held at Bloomsburg University on Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17.

General information:

  • Tournament date: Saturday, February 25
Moon Area HS (be careful – this is a change from recent years!)
  • Registration opens on Tabroom.com on Monday, January 30 at 5:00 PM
  • Registration closes on Wednesday February 22 at 5:00 PM; fees are set at that time.
  • Judges and Drops can be made through February 23 at 5:00 PM. But fees still apply!
  • In order to share judges, four PHSSL districts (1, 2, 3, and 16) will be competing at Moon on 2/25.
  • District 2 consists of seven schools:
    • Aquinas
    • Lincoln Park
    • Mars
    • North Allegheny
    • North Catholic
    • North Hills
    • Pine Richland
  • Please make sure that you enter your students and judges for District 2. Tabroom will show the number (2) followed by the event. Our students will compete against each other, but our judges will be used to judge the other districts.
  • Only two students/teams per event, unless your entries are impacted by the number of bid-qualifiers that you have. Please see the notes about bids below.
  • Students who have qualified to the State Tournament through bids from previous tournaments (check the PHSSL website to see if your student is listed) should NOT be registered on Tabroom for qualifiers. Instead, head coaches should confirm that those students are accepting their bids to go to States by sending an email to Beth Young (byoung14@gmail.com) by Tuesday 2/21 with the name of the event and the name of the student. Please remember that if a student has earned a State slot and then they register for another event at qualifiers, they are relinquishing their rights to the earned position. ALSO, a school cannot have more than four students in an event by any combination; as an example, if you have three students who have qualified to states by bids in prose, you can only enter ONE student for state qualifiers in prose.
  • Please try to fill your quota in each event! If we have 10 entries in an event, then three entries qualify to States in that event!
  • The judging quota is 1 judge for every four entries in speech, and 1 judge for every two entries in debate.
  • Registration fees for district 2 - $6.00 per single-events; $12.00 for partnered events. Please make all checks payable to “North Catholic Forensics.”

General format of the tournament:

7:30 – 8:15 - In person registration

8:30 – Judges’ meetings, announcements, extemp and commentary report to prep

9:00 – Round 1 begins, with three preliminary rounds, lunch, finals

1:00 (approximately) – Final rounds in events with eight or more participants

3:00 - Awards

Points to remember:

  • Entries in Informative and Persuasive Speaking must have
    • a copy of the speech,
    • a bibliography,
    • and a cover sheet signed by the student and coach declaring the speech to be the original work of the student
    • speeches are due to the district chair before the tournament begins
  • Entries in the Senate must have
    • a bill or resolution for the district competition (one per school)
    • legislation is due by Wednesday February 15
    • please email these as attachments to Beth Young (byoung14@gmail.com)
    • Senate packets will be distributed by Saturday February 18
  • In addition to the students who qualify to the State Tournament, each PHSSL school is permitted one entry in each of the State Tournament only events: Congress House, Impromptu Speaking, Extemporaneous Debate, and News Broadcasting.

During the course of the tournament, we will be holding elections for the district 2 chair for next year. If you are interested in being on the District 2 committee and/or running for chair, please let me know by Thursday 2/23. Schools do not have to be present at qualifiers to be eligible for the committee or to vote for the chair.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thanks,

Beth Young (byoung14@gmail.com)
