Judge Requirements

Judge Requirements—a very small number of judges will be available for hire at $175. Schools are strongly encouraged to cover their judging obligations, as this will make for a much stronger tournament. As per the recommendations of the district committee, we are requiring this year that schools provide at minimum one judge for every event in which that school has entries.

NOTE: With our plan to 'flight' events, we SHOULD be able to allow judges to 'double-enter.' However, judges who choose to double-enter will run the risk of being utilized throughout the entire event and will need to stick to the schedule. Please only utilize judges in this manner in as limited of a capacity as possible. Thank you.

Quotas

1 judge per 2 Lincoln-Douglas entries (or fraction thereof)

1 judge per 2 Policy teams (or fraction thereof)

1 judge per 2 Public Forum teams (or fraction thereof)

1 judge per 6 Speech entries (or fraction thereof)

We highly recommend that judges complete judge training and the Cultural Competence training that is linked on the NSDA page here: https://www.speechanddebate.org/judge-training/

There are a lot of helpful videos on that page that would benefit all judges, even experienced judges. Please remember that Speech & Debate is an educational activity and we should all be mindful of how we word feedback to students so that the feedback is helpful and constructive and focuses on the content of the presentation. This document is especially helpful: https://www.speechanddebate.org/wp-content/uploads/Culturally-Competent-Judge-Training.pdf
