Round 1 [2-10]
Info Slide: In 2017, Teamsters Local 174 went on strike against concrete supplier Glacier Northwest. Consequently, mixed concrete hardened and spoiled. Glacier Northwest sued the union, alleging that the union timed the strike to create intentional property damage. Teamsters Local 174 argued that the strike was federally protected by the National Labor Relations Act, preventing the company from retaliating against the union for striking. The Washington Supreme Court ruled that the company’s claims were preempted under the Supreme Court’s 1959 decision in San Diego Building Trades Council v. Garmon, which blocks the state and municipal regulation of activities protected by federal labor law. The Supreme Court has agreed to review the case and consider whether an employer making common-law allegations of intentional destruction of property during a labor dispute constitutes an exception to federal labor law preemption of state lawsuits.
Resolved: In the case of Glacier Northwest, Inc. v. International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local Union No. 174, the Supreme Court of the United States should rule in favor of Glacier Northwest, Inc.

Round 2 [6-6]
Info Slide: Mutually preferred judging is a judge assignment system where debate teams rank judges on a preference scale prior to the tournament. When pairing rounds, rather than randomly assigning judges, Tabroom will evaluate the individually submitted rankings of both teams and attempt to assign the highest-ranked mutually preferred judge to each round. This is done by balancing preference (teams getting judges they rated highly) vs. mutuality (teams getting a judge that they and their opponents rated similarly) alongside tournament constraints.
Resolved: At high school parliamentary debate tournaments, random assignment of judges is preferable to mutually preferred judging."
