Harry B. Davis Award

This Middle School Student of the Year Award is in honor of long-time coach and community member Harry Davis who passed away in 2013. Harry was the driving force behind bringing debate to middle and elementary schools.

The UDCA awards one student whose attitude transcends trophies and accolades; a student who characterizes the very traits of humility, integrity, leadership, respect and service that Harry Davis embodied as a friend of Utah Debate.

Coaches may nominate a deserving middle school student by describing in 250 words (1500 characters) or less how their student lives the values mentioned above and serves community over self. This student must attend the State tournament. Nominations should be submitted by May 7th.   Enter your nomination in this form. 

 Carol Lynn Ross Award

 Carol Lynn Ross earned both her B.S. and Masters Degree in teaching from the U of U. She received two endorsements in gifted education. She taught acting, ballet, debate and ballroom dancing. She taught elementary school in New Jersey, Logan and across the Salt Lake Valley. Local schools lucky to have her include: Canyon Rim, Lincoln, Sumner, Nibley Park, Emerson, Riley, Lowell, Uintah and Parkside. Carol Lynn specialized in gifted and talented education working in the EQUIP, Horizon and ELP programs. In 1970, she was a Delegate to the Women's State Legislate Council. In 1992 she wrote SCR#4 - a resolution on state Earthquake Preparedness. This resolution became law and won 17 students a trip to the United Nations. In 1997, her Future Problem Solving Team represented Utah at the International FPS competition. In 1999, she was honored in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers." Her students from Lowell and Uintah won the Utah State Debate championships seven years running.

This award is meant to honor teachers like Carol Lynn who have worked tirelessly for students, especially for the debate community at large.  Please nominate someone who has supported middle/elementary school debate in 250 word (1500 characters) or less.  The winner will receive a $200 prize and a plaque.  Please enter nominations by May 7th.  Enter your nomination in this form
