UIL 5A Region 3 Speech Debate

2021 — NSDA Campus, TX/US

Rules and Regulations

Below you will find rules specific to UIL competition in the online space. Please make sure that you share these with your students. Though not a rule, please make sure that your students understand proper camera placement - webcams/laptops should be placed at chest or just below eye level. This helps with the visibility of facial expressions and maximizes the judges' ability to see their faces. Cameras placed too low create awkward angles and make it hard to judge nonverbal communication. Additionally, students should try to 'frame' themselves from the waist up to maximize visibility while also allowing the judges to view gestures, body movements, etc.

  • Schools MUST create a profile on Tabroom and enter their students in the UIL Regional Meet no later than 4/14

  • Schools MUST ensure that EACH STUDENT participating in the UIL Regional meet has an account on Tabroom, set up no later than 4/14. Students without an account on Tabroom will not be able to participate

  • In Extemp, students must deliver speech standing (unless prohibited by physical ability). This helps prevent ‘reading’ the speech off the screen. If students are using a notecard for prelims (not allowed in finals), the notecard MUST be visible in the frame while the students are speaking. If a student uses a notecard, following the speech they must put the notecard in front of the camera so that judges can see size and singularity.

  • In PO/PR, students must deliver speech standing (unless prohibited by physical ability). Binders MUST be visible in the frame while students are speaking.

  • Cameras must be on at ALL times during each round, including draw.

  • LD Debate specific issues

    • Email chains for evidence sharing/examination should be set up BEFORE each round and should include the judge and debaters involved in the round.

    • Cases should be made available when requested, to either judges or opponents, as per UIL rules
