Important Tabroom links (will be updated day of the tournament):

1.     AT 8:00 AM, ALL STUDENTS, JUDGES AND COACHES, Sign into Tabroom.com; select “DSDA 3 ROUNDER” as tournament. YOU MUST USE CHROME!!! No other web browser will work with NSDA Campus.  Please make sure this is installed the day before the tournament to avoid unnecessary chaos the morning of.

2.     JUDGES please click on JUDGES LOUNGE and check in with your coach and DSDA staff person.

3.     STUDENTS please click on CAFETERIA and check in with your coach and DSDA staff person.

4.     COACHES- please go to DASHBOARD on Tabroom and sign in when all your students and judges are present. This should be completed 30 MINUTES BEFORE ROUND 1 so that we have time to re-do the schematic if someone is missing. You are responsible for making sure your students and judges are where they need to be and have connectivity, etc.

5.     EXTEMP PREP will be a utility room similar to judges and student lounges.

6.     IMPORTANT:  After you receive the ballot/e-blast for first round, you must exit the student and judge lounges before you can gain access to the NSDA Campus Room.

Important Announcements:

JV and V Congress will be starting on Bill #1. The docket is uploaded onto the tabroom page.

There are some “combined” speech rooms-- this is where, because there are 1-2 entries in an event, several events have been combined together. These events will be held via zoom (link in tabroom and below). Judges of these events will need to rank/enter ballots separately for each event.

Note: In the combined Interp room (POI, DP and DUO) POI should go first so they can go to any other double entered event.

Extempers who are double entered so do extemp FIRST.

Judges, please note: You may have students entering your room late, because they are double entered in Extemp. Do not wait for them, even if you have reached them in the order given on your ballot. Go to the next competitor, then fit in the double entered student when they arrive. Of course, if the student enters before their assigned speaking order, they should speak in the correct order.

Check in Reminders (for Coaches):

Coaches should check in via the “on site confirmation” tab in the Dashboard on Tabroom.com once they have confirmed that all of their entries and judges are accounted for.

Any changes should be texted to Sue Hayes at 302-824-2427.

Coaches who text to change their entry should confirm by checking in at the cafeteria during registration.

Judge Reminders:

It is strongly recommended that you save your comments frequently during the round. I actually recommend that you use a Word document to record notes and comments, because if you lose internet connection, you will still have your notes saved. You can dictate comments in Word (upper right button) and that may be faster than typing.

Check your tech prior to the tournament starting. You can use this website to practice logging into NSDA Campus.

After the pairings are released, press START when you get the ballot to confirm that you have received it.

Room checkers will confirm that your round has started (but you don't need to wait for them to begin).

Please submit your decision and ranks ASAP after the round has ended. You will have until noon on Sunday 1/31 to add any additional feedback to your ballots.

Please see these instructions for judging Congress!

DO NOT move a round to a private zoom or different platform without consulting tab staff. This is equivalent to solving the problem of a room being locked by moving the debate to your car-- it can cause legal concerns for you, the tournament, and the schools involved. If you run into problems that would make you think zoom is the answer, please reach out to tab and we can help you troubleshoot or determine next steps.

Schedule:

8:00 STUDENTS, JUDGES, COACHES log into Tabroom- go to Cafeteria.

8:30 COACHES verify via Tabroom that all are present and accounted for.

8:45- We blast the round pairings out.

If you have any changes, please text to SUE HAYES at 302-824-2427 no later than 8:30.

Tech Info:

The tournament will use NSDA Campus/tabroom.com for all rounds except for the ones listed above (when a combination of divisions was needed). The system runs in Google Chrome, and that’s it. All competitors and judges will need Chrome. Everyone should test their set up at https://campus.speechanddebate.org/ - enter a practice/test room, be sure that the application can see your camera and microphone. EVERY STUDENT AND JUDGE MUST REGISTER ON TABROOM.COM!! You will be unable to compete/judge if you do not.

Our best advice to solve connection issues is to start each tournament day with a browser restart (not closing a tab, closing the full browser) and clearing cookies. This is also a key troubleshooting step that has solved most issues for most people. If you have a finicky computer, try restarting the entire system before rounds.

Where’s my ballot? Where’s the room?

Here! On the main screen of your tabroom account (click your email address in the upper right to refresh the page) you’ll see this view when you have a round.

The camera icon takes you to the room (in a separate window). The start button opens the ballot.

Mid-round tech issues

If a student loses their connection in the middle of a round, the team’s 10 minute tech timer (or what is left of it) begins counting. This is not prep time! If the team is unable to reconnect before tech time elapses, they will forfeit the round.

If a judge loses their connection in the middle of a round, the debaters should contact tab right away.

Mid-speech tech issues

The above applies under mid-round tech issues, but the speech will resume from the point where it was lost.

Camera best practices

Keep your webcam at eye level

Do not move your webcam when someone is speaking. Ideally, keep your webcam at the same location for the entire round

Tech Troubleshooting Tips

Try these steps, starting with a browser restart, if you have trouble connecting. You don’t need to try all the steps at the same time! Judges, if you are experiencing tech issues or have trouble getting onto NSDA Campus, please contact tab ASAP.

1.       Restart browser (not just the tab, close all browser tabs and windows and re-open Chrome)

2.       Try on another device (i.e. phone….download the Jitsi App and Google Chrome)

3.       Reduce video quality (in NSDA Campus, click the three dots in the bottom right, select Manage Video Quality, and crank it down - and ask the rest of the room to do the same)

4.       Turn camera off

5.       Clear cookies

6.       Incognito mode

7.       Restart computer

Contacting Tab

In NSDA Campus, to the right of your room there is an info box. The fourth tab is contact:

Which opens up this:

Which will send a message directly to the tab email. You can also send an email directly. Please include the room number and full description of the problem!

Speaker Point Scale in Debate

Speaker points are used to give a holistic measurement of the effectiveness of the debater’s participation in the round - speaking, strategy, decorum, etc. Judges must follow the speaker point scale, regardless of what they are used to or may prefer, so that there is a fair standard across all rounds. Plus, if we have a standard, points provide meaningful feedback instead of being arbitrary and useless!

29.5-30: I wish I could frame your speeches – hard to imagine a better speaker

29.1-29.4: you were consistently excellent

28.8-29.0: you were effective and strategic, and made only minor mistakes

28.3-28.7: you hit all the right notes, but could improve (e.g. depth or efficiency)

27.8-28.2: you mainly did the right thing, but left something to be desired

27.3-27.7: you missed major things and were hard to follow

27.0-27.2: you advanced little in the debate or cost your team the round

26.0-26.9: you are not ready for this division/tournament

Below 26: you were offensive, ignorant, rude, or tried to cheat (MUST come to tab)

Low-point wins (where the winning team has fewer points than the losing team) are allowed.

Content Warnings

Teams reading sensitive content ought to offer a content warning before the round and obtain affirmative consent from all parties. Please ensure you have received a response from all parties; silence is not consent. If you are obtaining consent via text, have people text to opt in as well, or at least confirm again that you did not get any opt outs before you read the argument (eg: “I did not get any opt out texts. Is that correct?”). You can also try the Google form method, wherein everyone checks yes or no to indicate if they’re okay with the argument anonymously and you count the correct number of answers. Remember to have a backup case on hand for opt outs.
