Discord Server Guide and Requirements

The Carmel High School Debate Tournament will be held virtually using Discord. Discord is a free, multichannel and multimedia communication app that allows us to host private channels for each team and rooms for rounds that include text, voice, and video chat. Thus, all Judges and Competitors need to join the Discord server by Friday (11/20) at 11:59pm

Join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/v9zrQXdkSF

Note: If clicking on the link does not work, please copy the link. Next, open Discord, click the plus sign on the left side of your screen, select "Join a Server" at the bottom of the pop-up, paste the link into the invite link field, and then click the "Join Server" button. If this does not work, please contact us via the indicated communication method on our tournament home page.

Upon joining the server both Competitors and Judges will need to do the following.

 --

  1. Change their username to [School Name] First Name Last Name

ie. [Carmel] John Smith

This can be done by right clicking one’s username and selecting ‘change nickname’

  1. Open the #tournament-setup channel on the left sidebar
  2. Scroll up and click the green checkmark to indicate whether you are a "Judge" or "Competitor"

  3. Click the blue checkmark corresponding to your event (Novice/Varsity and LD/PF/CX/WSD/Congress)

  4. Click the black checkmark to indicate your school. This will give access to your school's private text and voice channels that can be used by schools throughout the tournament.

--

On the day of the tournament, both Judges and Competitors should follow the steps below to enter their rooms once rounds have been assigned (found on tabroom, #postings, or from a blast out message).

  1. Open the #room-access channel and click the green checkmark under your room number. This will be cleared between rounds, so both debaters and judges will need to re-indicate their room number before each round.

  1. Your room should now appear on the list of channels on the left sidebar. (example: Room 1, Varsity Public Forum). Click on it to join. Click another time to enter the call.
  2. You are now connected via voice! Competitors and judges should also turn on their video if possible.

  3. For Congress only: Because of Discord call limitations, we will be hosting Congress rooms via Zoom. Join the Congress Chambers Room and then on the left sidebar under, open #novice-zoom-link or #varsity-zoom-link to get access to the Zoom call.

For sharing evidence in round, teams can either direct message opponents or set up an email chain.

For quick reference, this guide will be posted on the #how-to-use channel. Additionally, both judges and competitors can "visit" tab via the #tab channel for any issues or concerns. To speak to tab directly for any immediate issues, join the Help Desk Waiting Room channel, and we'll help you as soon as we can.

Thank you for your participation! If you have any additional questions about the Discord Server, please contact one of the tournament organizers.
