Polygon Invitational

2020 — Online, CA/US

Saturday Checklist

Hi, all,

We hope you enjoyed the first day of the Polygon Invitational, and we look forward to seeing you tomorrow. Below are a few announcements. Please read them carefully in order to streamline Saturday logistics.

Check-in:

 - Chaperones who checked in via Zoom on Friday do not have to check in again on Saturday. That said, y’all are always welcome to drop by our Zoom meeting if you feel like it or if you have questions.

- Varsity students do not need to check in again on Slack. They should, however, keep an eye on the Slack #announcements channel.

- Novice students need to check in on the Slack #student-check-in channel between 6AM and 9:10AM on Saturday (the earlier the better).
Only one student per partnership should sign in.
Ask your coach or varsity teammates for the Slack invite link.

- All judges who are judging Saturday (both two-day judges and Saturday-only judges) should use the Slack #judge-checkin channel to check in between 6AM and 9:10AM on Saturday (the earlier the better).

Judge Instructions

- All judges must join the Zoom meeting at 9:20AM for judge instructions.
The Zoom link is the same as Friday. It will be posted on Slack.

- Judges should refer to the tournament invite for the tentative schedule. Rounds will start 20 minutes after the topic announcement.

- Judges should click ‘Start Round’ as soon as they receive a ballot - they should not wait for the debate to actually start.

- Judges can see if the round pairings have been released by checking the tournament Tabroom.com page, and then selecting their division and round number on the right-hand sidebar.

If pairings have been released, but a judge was not assigned a ballot, that judge should come to the tournament Zoom meeting and wait to be assigned.
If the judge did get assigned a ballot, they should wait 20 minutes for the students to finish preparing their cases, and then go straight to their NSDA Campus room.

Zoom Breakout Rooms

All students, judges, and chaperones must ensure that they have their Zoom client updated (version 5.3.0 or later). This will allow them to join breakout rooms without being manually assigned.

See update instructions: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362233-Upgrade-update-to-the-latest-version

If a person is unable to update their Zoom, they can private-message a member of the tab staff stationed in the main room and request to be moved manually.

There will be a breakout room called ‘Varsity’ intended for varsity students who have questions about round 4 and 5 rules. Round rules are available on the tournament invite:
https://www.tabroom.com/index/tourn/index.mhtml?webpage_id=10769&tourn_id=16763
There will be an optional meeting at 9:00 AM for any students who have questions about rules.

Each school will be assigned breakout rooms that can be used for prep. We will assign 4 rooms to each school, which can be used for Gov/Opp in both varsity and novice. The use of squad prep breakout rooms is optional.

Elim Rounds

Elim rounds will be done in Zoom breakout rooms instead of NSDA Campus. This will allow people to observe rounds.

All observers should turn off their cameras and keep themselves muted throughout the round. Observers should rename themselves to add the ‘observer’ tag at the start of their name, like so:
observer - Mary Lee

After elimination round pairings are released, all debaters should join the breakout room. 3 resolutions will then be posted on the topic announcements doc. Opp will have 1 minute to strike one resolution. Gov will have 1 minute to strike another resolution. Debaters can then leave the round breakout room for 20 minutes to prep, after which they should return and start the debate.
